Ok have not attempted to built anything since, well lets say its been 20 years plus now but I am going to try and build a nice wall with two pillars at the back of my garden, you have no idea how helpful these videos are. I am under no illusion and know that brick laying is so much harder than it looks and I also appreciate that after having done it for so long and just "doing things" how you have for years, it must be very hard to do them slow and explain them for videos like this mate. Thanks a lot, old video but trust me, I bet it is still helping lots of people!

Top man, Rodian. Love the "realness" of your video's. This is what apprentices need to see....REAL LIFE......wet bricks, damp, shitty cold weather....the lot! Learn how to deal with the arse end of the trade as well as the lovely sunny weather money making end! Have a great Christmas with the family, bud. 🍺🍺👍

Hi Rodian, good videos mate just a little experience I had laying piers in winter/cold conditions, seems like those first three bricks on the bottom were soaking wet compared to the upper three courses so I found if they wet they’ll seep and leak for days till the weather dries up, also i found if the actual mortar has been mixed with really wet sand you won’t be needing to add any water to your mix what so ever just let it mix in the mixer dry, be patient and the wet sand will bring the mortar to the correct consistency you require depends on what mortar you using. Eg sand/cement or sand/lime and yes a small neat cap full of Feb should be all required to give you the fluffy mix if the sand was wet initially, but I find if you know you’ll be laying those bricks in cold/wet conditions it’s always best to ensure the brick you using are kept bone dry, the night before any wet/damp ones should be either left well alone altogether or brought indoors and heated up to dry out before using. Hope this helps your seeping mortar issues

I once had the same problem with no suction and the mortar weeping. I thought it was the salt in the bricks. I had to wait ages before I could point. It was a right pain. Cheap bricks maybe. But it was in the cold weather. Would be interesting to find out what it was so it doesn’t happen again

If you put Feb in lime mortar it reduces capillarity so you may as well use white cement. What you could do is try quicklime at 1:3. Very workable because of the high free lime content and very porous. But you have to wait a while for it to gain strength if you want to hang a gate. If you want that colour - and also the strength - best stick to white cement with Feb Bond or any other plasticiser.

Hi Rodian , Thanks very much for this video and all the other great and helpful videos you have made. As a suggestion for a future video would you be kind enough to make one about setting up string lines for brick-specials. In particular AN 6.1 brick specials, as I intend to use these as capping bricks to finish off a brick wall I am in the process of making. Best wishes, Paul.

My old college tutor advised us to build piers without buttering the perp joints as we lay as to not push the other bricks out of plumb and fill the joints in as you go or with a tuck pointer at the end...just wondering what anyone’s opinion/view on this would be ? Am only 17 so just trying to learn the trade correctly 👍🏻
@RodianBuilds5 жыл бұрын
I haven't ever built a pier in that way but I have seen it being done. I personally dont like doing it that way because it would take ages to tuck the much in after. Once you've built a few piers you'll get used to how to plumb them up guttering the bricks as you go
@johnbower4 жыл бұрын
Ashley Thomas, what your tutor advised is best especially when building something like a pier, lay the bricks around one course then fill the perps before laying the next course. Good look with your brickwork

Are you soaking the bricks just before laying them? They look to be too wet. I'd soak them the day before and let them sit overnight. Another thing I thought of as well is your lime mortar that you use in your tutorials. You can scoop that up after your videos and throw it in a bucket with a lid and cover the muck with a small amount of water and it will keep indefinitely. That way you can use it over and over saving you some coin. You'll have to knock it up if you let it sit for awhile, but you'll have some nice creamy muck.
@RodianBuilds4 жыл бұрын
I wasnt soaking them. I think it was because it was cold and they had some condensation on them
