Great video! I've been thinking about adding an exhaust fan to my shop (garage) all summer! :)
@frankthornal94899 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed the video very much. One question, why are you filtering the exhaust that is just exhausting to the outdoors? Seems a very nice piece of expanded metal to cover the indoors side of the box would be a better idea or a decorative piece of grill work. It would alleviate the cost of replacing the filter once it gets clogged with saw dust and/or any thing else the would clog it.

+Frank Thornal Putting a light filter in front of an exhaust fan is a trick to avoid having to clean the blades for maintenance. Also protect the motor from dust.
@phil.pinsky9 жыл бұрын
+Frank Thornal It's sucking air from inside the shop to the outside and trapping the dust in the filter. The whole setup is used to clean the shop air.

that's a good idea, I was wondering why he'd filter air that was headed out of the shop
@SurinderSingh-uw2vo7 жыл бұрын
A fine mesh on inside would act as barrier for flies and mosquitoes entry . Also fan fins and motor will stay cleaner. And keeping it removable helps in cleaning it often.

I bet you are glad you put that fan in to blow out the fumes. Do you open the door to let fresh air in when its on? Also, nice laser level. I need one of those. I enjoyed the video Jon. Douglas

That's a great idea to add a filter! Thanks so much for that tip! I definitely don't want to have to mess with taking apart the fan and cleaning it. I think anybody knows how annoying _that_ can be, even with just a regular indoor standing fan. Thank you!

Good work. A fine mesh on inside would act as barrier for flies and mosquitoes entry . Also fan fins and motor will stay cleaner. And keeping it removable helps in cleaning it often. I am planning to do same on my kitchen exhaust in my under-construction house in Punjab/India leaving the door and adding an iron grill on outside.

Are you gonna go all Steve Ramsey and paint it purple? LOL! good tips in the video... Just a thought if you don't end up putting the wiring in the wall you could run it down to the bottom of the wall and build the little casing all the way around down at the bottom so its not right in the middle of the wall.... But if you paint it the color or the wall it won't be that visible anyways.

What's the purpose of the door? The fan already has automatic shutters. Extra insulation? Aesthetic reasons?

Nice build Jon but I'm curious why you are filtering the air exiting your shop? I assume the door it to keep cold air out in the winter when the fan is not being used. That makes sense.

maybe a dumb question, but why are you filtering the exhaust? is there something right outside the shop you are trying to protect? great channel keep up the great work!
@1968Fastback9 жыл бұрын
+Emerald13 I thought the same thing but if you watch when he turns the fan on, its actually bringing air in the shop. So i guess its not an exhaust fan.
@jonatham359 жыл бұрын
+Dan Smith It is blowing air out not in. He did a video of the install.

+Emerald13 Better than cleaning the blades all the time.
@Emerald139 жыл бұрын
+JD Worx disagree, big fan like that should be fairly easy to clean. Honestly though filters like that get expensive, unless you don't replace them in which case you slowly start choking the fan. If I did want to add a filter, I would try to find one I can spray clean
@marquisbois9909 жыл бұрын
+Emerald13 Caged in blades are a pain to clean, especially as some fans you can't even open the cage. The maintenance filters we have over the work ones here are easy to clean with air and it's crazy how much dust comes off them, even though the air in the shop is filtered.

I live on the east coast too,the flaps on the front of the fan when closed is your door,that's why I asked.

I would think then it would be a positive seal from any air leaks and keep some cleaver squirrels out too.

Jon Im curious why a filter on the fan if its blowing air out of your shop?
@JonPetersArtHome5 жыл бұрын
I only use the filter when I’m spraying paint . The filter will keep the overspray from getting on the side of the building.
@renobtankit60195 жыл бұрын
@@JonPetersArtHome Oh I see, good catch on that lol I would of learned the hard way and gotten overspray on the building...oh and by the way are you happy with the amount of air the fan pulls from the building?
@Michael.hughes-vj4io7 ай бұрын
Why would you filter exhaust air ? Keeping the fan blades clean is done with compressed air daily or weekly....seems a bit ridiculous dont u think

Maybe you should put a contact switch on the door, have it automatically turn on/off based on having the door open and closed.

How to change bearing process
@TheSeancassady9 жыл бұрын
This should work fine and having the quick access to the filter to change it will make it convenient but I'm with some of the other comments in that you'd get more airflow and therefore more dust sucked out of your shop if it wasn't filtered.
