diyforknucklehe... How to Build a Deck. Owner Builder Series: Episode 48! G'day Knuckleheads, Uncle Knackers here and welcome to my How to Build a Front Deck Video. The owner builder renovation is almost over! In this Episode l go over the process of building the front deck. The end result was fantastic and was well worth the effort and expense. I used treated pine for the sub floor and Tonka (a South American Hardwood) for the fascia boards, deck posts and the decking boards. The two major reasons for using Tonka for the deck was that it's very attractive to look at and it is the only Hardwood that doesn't leach! 6 years later and this video is still gold. I've learned things in this video that I haven't from others, like using the spray to seal the cut ends. I really like the part where the joists were slighter lower than the band so the floor would be flush with it. The stairs were awesome too.

I can't imagine how nice it must be to freely order wood like that in bulk. In the UK hardwood costs a fortune so I'm pretty much limited to pine. That's such a great job. I don't think I've seen a nicer deck!

Shane, you make that look as easy as Bob's Your Uncle. Before you attach the joists, do you inspect them for bowing? What do you do if you find one that is bowed? Thanks again, mate!

Thanks David and yes l always inspect for bowing. If there is a bow, install the joist bow side (the top of the bridge) up. If possible l always hand select my timber from the hardware shop before purchasing. If you don't, and just rely on them, they'll throw any old rubbish into your order. If you don't get that chance, select the straight ones for the joists and cut the bent ones up as noggins. Cheers mate :-)

John l absolutely panicked! All my unfinished videos greyed out the photos were unclickable. Thanks to a youtube video l found l was able to get around the greyed out videos issue but the photos were a different issue. Hi Shane. Neat job! What's the difference between Paslode nailer gun and the coil nailer? I'm about to build a 30sqm low level deck and have heaps of noggins to fix in between my joists. Screw each of them sounds will take some time so looking to get myself a nail gun to speed up the job.

G'day mate...sorry about the late reply. The coil nail shoots a nail with large flat head so it's often used for fencing and attaching metal brackets to wood which is why l used it on this job. The Paslode nailer is really suited to nailing wood to wood without any metal in between. Hope that makes sense. 👍

Another question Shane: What sized nails are you using to temporarily attach those joist to the fascia board and what type are you using in the nail gun? Cheers...again lol! Also, would it be ok to use an impact driver for the screws?

Thanks mate. Yeah it's not a very common Species. I used it because it doesn't leech and it looks fantastic. I wanted a beach feel to the place so this timber will go silver if not oiled which is kind of the look l want to go for eventually. I just need some plants to grow first before l let it grey off. Could you use an off cut of the joist material to make a 'scribe' if the the wall plate (plate attached the house) wasn't plumb or had a twist in it? Would this help in getting the joist end square to that plate?

Shane, why did you offset the pairs of SS screws in the decking? I can't imagine splitting would be an issue in either the decking or the joists underneath?

G'day mate, another random question; with the laying of the decking boards do you have to calculate the width of the deck from the house out to the front of the deck frame ( or the first deck board layed) to enable to have a full board that is finishing up to the weatherboards, or do you just Rip a board to suit the last space of decking to be covered. Mate, l allow for a 3mm (which is normally the width of a 3 inch nail) gap between each board and finish off with the cut board against the house 👍👍

Gday mate, that was there just to hold the boards up tight to the bottom of the whaler plate (the board that is secured to the house). Since l work by myself, the board acted as a second pair of hands.....hope that makes sense 👍😁🇦🇺

They are shit like all monopolies. Get you in on a special, every thing else is over priced and you get sucked in 'cause you can get most DIY things there. E.g. recently saved 1000 bucks on (better) spotted gum deck boards by not buying there.

Your either a super marksman and managed to get all the nails lined up with the pre drilled holes in the hangers... or.. the gun has enough power to fire through the Galv. I was stupid enough to do it by hand. Arr well, I should have waited for you to show me how to do it ;0 It looks GREAT. When are you moving in?

Dead eye dick Peter :-) Na all you need to do is get the nailer close to the hole and the power of the gun will find the path of least resistance and go in or close to the hole. Mate... it makes the job so much quicker and l have to say better. The nails really get driven home with the gun. G'day Dirk. I wish l did have offcuts....l finished up with only a couple of short sticks left!! Talk about cutting it fine, l thought l had actually over ordered :-) No there's no need to oil the treated pine. Just make sure you treat all the cut ends with L.O.S.P. Deck looks great Shane! Quick question: I have a deck that is ageing and the wood is in need of sanding (again) and polishing. It's already had several sands and I'm afraid that it might be too thin to take another. In which case I'll have to replace the decking boards. The current ones are nailed in and each time I get the deck sanded the guys punch down the nails so they don't rip up the sander. What's the story with screws? Take them out and re-drill them lower? I'm debating about whether I use nails or screws if I have to put new boards in. (Oh, and yes, if I took care of the deck it wouldn't need this treatment but the situation in regard to maintenance is "complicated"). Thanks Shane!

G'day Gary. Hands down, screws are the way to go like l did in the video....and if using screws, spend a little extra and buy stainless steel ones. Use a countersinking tool like the "Macsim Clever Tool" l used and the screw heads will finish flush with the surface. Good luck 👍

Where did you get the LOSP spray Shane? When I have asked for something like that at Bunnings and Home Hardware I got the (all too familiar) glazed eyes look...

I got it from Bunnings Rudyard. There are two types. One is green and the other is clear. The clear comes in a white and blue can and the green comes in a white and green can. When applying the spray to the Hardwood, make sure you use the clear one.....the green one stains the timber..l found that out the hard way :-) When in Bunnings ask for Enseal Clear Timber Preservative.....they have it. What's you me thoughts on the decks that look like wood but they are made of a plastic or rubber. It's hard to notice a difference between wood and supposedly it lasts a lot longer.

Not a big fan MNM. I can pick them out from a mile away. They claim to look like real wood but they don't. They look plastic in my opinion.Compare some against some real wood and you'll see what l mean. Having said that, some people love it and they don't rot. Cheers

G'day Shane, is that a standard coil nailer you used for the hangers and did you shoot through the hanger (ie not through the holes)? What length and shank type of nails did you use? I've heard of specific connector plate nailers being available, but have never seen one personally. My framing gun has a connector plate attachment but I've never used it, nor my coil nailer for joist hangers so curious to hear from somebody who has.

Hi Pete. It's just a standard coil nailer (DuoFast) and l use a 32mm rib shanked galvanised nail. I try and line the gun up with the holes on the hanger if possible. That way it minimizes the possibility of the nail skewing out the side. Have a great Crissy mate. Cheers

I like your work but I have concerns about all of the sanding you did for each counter sink screw. to me I would assume and it looks like there is spotting on the deck due to all of the sanding...did you stain it?

how did you attach the deck to the house and how does it sit on the undersoil? Bit sketchy on that.

A bearer was attached - see about 4:45 in and again at about 6:22 - to the bearer of the house. At the 6:22 mark you can see the screws that penetrate the deck bearer, the cladding and into the existing bearer. This front part of the house has the original frame (see the earlier vids).

The front bearer of the deck is checking to and then fixed to the deck posts which are, in turn, sitting on a stirrup either embedded in a concrete footing (which it looks like these are) or attached to the top of the concrete footing. The joists look like 200 x 45 (8 x 2s) and are fixed to the bearers with no other support than at each end (nailed and held by brackets). A tidy way to do it.

Is the gap between house and bearer not a place where moisture could collect? Or is that not a worry in your climate? I have been following the entire build, a most interesting project. And what a difference compared to what you started out with!

shaneconlan1 So you used screws for the actual decking boards, but for the supporting boards/timber you used nails? I think I once heard something about nails having more lateral strength. Do you think that's true?

I did use nails ArcaneCookie but l never just rely on them. I also attached any beams together with some kind of metal bracket whether that either be a hanging bracket, joist strap or a triple grip. Cheers
