Loved my KLR. Ultimately, I found it too heavy for a task like this (I'm not a very skilled or experienced rider, a better rider would probably have a different opinion). I prefer bikes in the 250-450 range for a bugout type of vehicle. Much more capable when you inevitably have to go off road or, god forbid, off trail. Just have to pack light and limber. Enjoy that thumper. They are an amazing bike.

That is a nice Huski, but remember, if it has F.I. then it may not work after an emp or powerful cme. Maybe get a bike with a carb (because of the computer chips involved) and be able to roll start it or kick it over just in case.

ABSOLUTELY Cody, a spare Master Link is probably hands down the most important spare part you can carry! I used to ride dirt, but enjoy hwy cruising more now. But a chain driven bike is useless w/o the chain.

I always keep two or three, along with extra link sets on my bikes. If I’m going on a long trip sometimes I’ll just take a whole chain as well. Keep ‘em with the tool bag and extra tubing/wiring/fittings. Method hasn’t let me down yet! (Don’t forget JB weld!)

@@wranglerstarcoil on both I believe. It wasn't until 1979 when they started putting rectifiers on the xr500. The 450 has a points system of some sort I believe which is slightly different than the xr500. I hope that was helpful I'm not the world's best motorcycle mechanic lol. Ironically in my 20 years owning the 450 the only thing it's gone through was spark plugs and oil changes. Only owned the 500 for 5 years but it's never let me down. Thanks for the content!!!

@@failblazer2004 in plain English my goal for my bikes is for them to be unaffected by an emp.. yes, your correct vehicles do need those to function. Adventure Touring of the local area - Yep. Perfect machine. Scout Vehicle, and maybe a First Response Vehicle if their is some local disasters - Yep. Pretty handy and pretty mobile and reasonably agile. War Machine - Nope. Open cockpit, 200km range, noisy, heat signature, flammable, and visible, and requires what will quickly become a scarce fuel supply. Yes it sure is a great idea when playing Zombie Apocalypse on the Laptop, but it has very little real world practicalities. Convert it to electric so you can quietly move at night, and rollout a Solar Blanket every day while you get some food and some sleep, and at least you have a theoretical unlimited range for a couple of years until batteries start failing. Even a Diesel Conversion sitting in the shed is going to be a better option than trying to keep a peaky 2 stroke running.
