Hey Neil, a fantastic Vesc tutorial very very detailed and extremely well done. It’s funny how technicians used to work with tools and they’re working on windows doing adjustments in little boxes with numbers lol ... how times have changed. Congratulations on the final tutorial on the DYI EBoard. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone to make their own EBoard and with your detailed steps they can’t go wrong. What a great contribution you’re making to the Esk8 builders forums and builders community congratulations Neil, lovely to see your daughter she is gorgeous you should be very proud, brings back memories of me and my daughter Georgia she is now 27 they grow so quick ... congratulations again Neil on the work you put into these videos and keep up the great tutorials ))) cheers Andrew )(

Georgia...what a wonderful name! Man, Andrew, I would love to meet you! It's funny how esk8ers really create such tight bonds when many of us have only been acquainted via the internet. Unfortunately, esk8ing and youtubing isn't as common as say American Football, or I would be best buds with all my neighbors! One day we will meet my friend and we'll talk and drink till the morning! Anyhow, my tutorial is really a simplistic baseline for the VESC. The VESC has so much flexibility that there is not one way to configure it! Anyhow, I really appreciate your kind words as being you KZbin makes you very vulnerable and at the same time kind of isolated. As I mentioned before, my neighbors don't understand what we do! So I love speaking to you, Ronnie Sarmiento, Tishawn Fahie, I AM DELUXE, Fabian from Fabtrav, and others because at the end of the day you all are my peers. Hope you are well bro and esk8 safe :) - Neil

Hey Big Kids )) i’m still smiling at your comment Neil yes I have neighbours too here bit of football mad crazy your typical alfa male all Aussie like all American dudes who just love their football beer and pizza LOL )) look don’t get me wrong I do follow my Australian Rugby League here and our season is just kicking off now...as I played it rep level when I was young, but yes I’m more into gadgetry like you EBoards / skateboards / Drones ect I was into Computer gaming for a while ..done Pro/am Paintball ... also love all sports that’s why skateboarding is in my blood Neil ...Ive be doing it since before Tony Alva and Jay Adams ever dropped into a empty swimming pool in California ) lol ...I was 11 back in 1971 when I started Skateboarding and Surfing which is pretty much my main sports. I haven’t heavily showcased my surfing that much on my channel yet but I will over the next few months get some videos of my surfboards and might do some footage of surfing there are spectacular 12 individual northern beaches only five minutes from my home )) hey Neil yeah man geez would love to sit down and have a drink and a good chat about everything one day as we have so much in common, you are such a switched on nice guy, really, it’s been a great privilege meeting you through this Internet / KZbin thingy ..and as you said this electric skateboard community world wide. I’m so happy you’re getting the Verreal V1 EBoard man you’ll love it ... and you ride it ...review it and you keep it it’s just an incredible piece of machinery and very sophisticated build )) i’ll be definitely travelling throughout the world over the next couple of years )) I’ll be going to all counties on the top 10 of my subscribers list is that hilarious... my biggest subscriber level comes from the United States of America)) i’ll be staying in nice 5 star hotels luxury and getting out riding and enjoying meeting the people I’ve chatted to online in all the different countries and cities throughout the world )) so yep !! will get to Las Vegas I’ve never been there before it’s going to be a blast so you and the family are getting taken out for dinner will be a really nice to catch up then Neil )) but that won’t start till about mid to late 2018. What a way to go lol .. travelling the world with 2x EBoards 1x Surfboard Vlogging it and just going on 3 months sabbaticals ..lol so much fun i’ll leave the Roman Coliseum and Machu Picchu until I’m 65 + ))) lol )) hey Ive noticed the electric skateboard community riders in Las Vegas is pretty impressive )) but what a wonderful support you’ve got there )) as you have really got no beaches near you and I suppose it’s pretty desolate and dry once outside the main city )) so electric Skateboards and drones is an awesome interest to have their Neil )) keep up the great work Neil and I look forward to your next vids in the meantime let’s do we do best and keep assisting this EBoard community by raising the bar on the level and quality of EBoard Vlogs )) cheers Bro Awesome ) Andrew )(

Will be cool to have a way to change the regen value on the way, with the Iphone or something through bluetooth, wifi or usb, that way you could charge the batteries while you are going down a big hill (setting the regen to more torque), or charging the batteries while riding with your legs ( setting the regen to less torque).

You set the values your talking about @9:55 to 36 & 35v instead of 3.6 & 3.5 like you stated you wanted. Huge difference there.
@BigKidsOfficial
@BigKidsOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
36 is only for my battery set up of 10s or 10 cells. If you have a 12s lipo it's 12s x 3.6 = 43v. So I didn't want to state my voltage cut off, rather the voltage cut off of one cell so people can do the math for themselves. That explains the difference.

Great series, I'm looking to make my own soon. Question: Have you looked into what can be done to weather-proof this board? And protect the belt from debris?
@BigKidsOfficial
@BigKidsOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the videos! You can 3D print or buy covers that attach the the mount. I personally have not used them. You can also go geared which is gear to gear taking the belt out of the equation. Usually with geared setups they are covered. I personally don't find the belts attract debris that will effect your ride. I just check the belts before riding. Good luck and shoot me an email at bigkidsofficial@gmail.com if you need a parts list.

I already own a Boosted Stealth, and ordered a Lacroix... I don't think I can build a board better than the pros like you, though I am interested in troubleshooting problems under the hood w/ the VESC software. Since the VESC platform is used to configure and monitor the settings of electric motors and remotes, will I be able to access such data from the commercial boards I purchased? I have to go back over your video and look at how you connected the computer to the VESC Controller via USB... I guess the question should be, do most commercial electric skateboards have a VESC controller, or are the VESC setting proprietary (inaccessible and/or behind a firewall)? I enjoyed all three videos... How did you learn all this? Pretty amazing that you figured out all those settings in the VESC app... you must have a few friends you can concur with, less you might fry some parts or even cause an explosion.

Hey James, so the story is about 2 years ago I wanted to purchase an electric skateboard only to find out my investment in one would be a lot of money. So I decided to get into DIY to learn how to build one and hopefully do it for less than what a Boosted would cost. What I didn't factor in where the tools to make the board as well as the mistakes I was about to make. Luckily I was able to find the esk8 forums which I think you would also find helpful. They are an awesome community of like-minded builders and many of them building boards like the LaCroix (Diy builders working on comercial boards). I think you would be a perfect fit for the forum. I made these videos because I also thought that the forum limited itself to text. My videos may not be the perfect solution for everyone but I was looking for videos like this when I was building my first board. Any how to answer your questions the Boosted uses a proprietary ESC which you can not program or configure. However I believe the La Croix uses a a highly reputable ESC from Enertion called the FOCBOX. The FOCBOX can be accessed via the BLDC tool, VESC tool, or many other version of the VESC tool developed by members of the esk8 forums. I hope that answered your question. Go ahead and check out the forum:. www.electric-skateboard.builders - Neil

hey following you i built my own board, but there is a problem that i have used a simple battery indicator from bangood and used a 18650 battery pack at 10s 2p configuration the problem is when my vesc cuts off the battery indicator is still showing 20% so i wanted to know that is that normal or is it only in my case
@BigKidsOfficial
@BigKidsOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on you VESC setting. Normally there is a cut off time about 20% before the battery hits 0%. You actually never really want to drain the battery to 0% because it will damage any battery. So, I'd actually say even 30% is better cut off and increases the longevity of your batteries. Hope that helpped.

I have large 100mm wheels, a single 6355 motor for now, and a 12s2p battery pack from diyelectricskateboard.com. Is there any way you could help me figure it out? Right now, my acceleration is very slow and it might just be because of my big wheels but I am not sure.
@BigKidsOfficial
@BigKidsOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Charlie! Sorry for the late reply. Did you figure out your issue? Yeah, 100mm wheels for a 6355 motor will be very demanding on the motor. It possibly could also be your VESC setting. With out being able to see your VESC settings it will be challenging to help. If you have time, go check out: www.electric-skateboard.builders/. It is an awesome community of folks that all build electric skateboards. If you have questions people there respond pretty quickly. Just a question I have a 8,800mah 12s battery How can I know the maximum battery discharge?
@BigKidsOfficial
@BigKidsOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
If you want to know your battery’s maximum discharge you’ll want to first convert your mah rating to ah. So divide 8800 by 1000 which leaves you with 8.8Ah. Now, multiply your 8.8Ah by your C rating. That will give you your max battery discharge potential. However, if you are asking about what your maximum battery discharge for your VESC I would put it between 50-60amps. Hope that helps. - Neil

Yoo whats good man!? Question, have you always used the BLDC configurations for your VESC from TB? I've read a lot about people who experienced troubles with frying their VESC when using them under the FOC configurations instead of BLDC for the additional benefits (less noise, efficient, etc). I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the risk since TB doesn't offer a warranty on the original price for their VESCs.

Hey bro, thanks for stopping by again! Yeah, FOC on the TB VESC has been known to fry DRV chips. But that is a risk you have with any VESC as the max output of a VESC is 50A continuous. If you run it on BLDC I find it works well. If you run FOC it may be better to invest a little more $$$ on a VESC like Ollin Boards or Enertions' FOC Box. If you have VESC issues there is a fella in the DIY community named DRVWizard that can fix your problem of you have one. Let me know if you have any other questions. - Neil

Yo thanks for the reply! Ok I see, I definitely recall reading about those more reliable/expensive VESCs on the DIY community. Thanks for the detailed info. No problem..yeah, the TB VESC is a decent starter VESC. But when you run FOC or higher Amperage set ups, you want to look into other vendors. I have 2 FOC boxes coming from Enertion, but they were a pretty penny. Good luck, and thanks again for the support! - Neil

@BigKidsOfficial
@BigKidsOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Thanks for watching! I hope you'd consider subscribing to see more videos like this one. Mah is the capacity of the battery. However, batteries are strange in that we measure empty and fully by the voltage. 3.0v is empty and 4.2v is full. Lipos are not recommend to discharge below 3.5v. This is just a common practice to keep the health of your batteries on the up and up. if you do discharge below 3.5v you risk your battery of damaging or the cells to become unbalanced. Hope that helped. Neil

Hello Big kids, I 'm currently building a dual motor electric skateboard. I bought Turnigy SK8-ESC V4.12 for speed controller and was wondering if it was possible to connect 2 of them (with a connector) so you can control both at the same time. Ty

Fam, your vids are fantastic! By far my fav new creator! Do you plan on ever doing some reviews on other DIYers, or brand name boards? It would be pretty cool to bring content on DIYer's more so than the big 5 out right now, e.g., Mellow, Boosted, Evolve, Enertion, Metro. What's your opinion on Carvon. I see the CARVON V4 TORQUEDRIVE are on sale. It seems to fit in my wheel house on what I need. Any insight on these? I need to send you an email on my build I am planning out. Would of sent an email a while ago, but my baby girl was introduced to the world and sleep and time is not on my side. I do have a question about a few things. I am thinking of going either dual 6374 or dual 6355. That will then put into motion which trucks I am going to purchase , gears, pulley etc. With the hills in my area, I am sure dual 6355 would be more than enough. Configure my mass at 200lbs with inclines of 8-15% grade hills has me worried. Not trying to stress out my motors. I guess I just need reassurance that the 6355 would be good to go for what I would need. Also, I am planning 10s4p battery or 12s4p. What do you think?
@givemeurmoney
@givemeurmoney 6 жыл бұрын
Ok the CARVON V4 is out after I have done more research. Seems like the cheaper version of what the EVO motor. Still breaking down what I am going to need and I am now researching more the VESC, just need to learn more about Maytech. Since I am leaning with the 10s battery, I am going with the 6355 190kv duals....so much reading, but I enjoy learning more about the ESK8 world.
@BigKidsOfficial
@BigKidsOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
I’m glad you are taking the route of research! People are very quick to ask what the best is? But the best thing about DIY is that you are only limited to your imagination! I actually have a pair of Carvon V4 XL speed drives on the way. The EXO is actually a great option! Pretty plug and play with a swappable battery. I’ll be doing a review on the Exo in the next couple months. But at the end of the day, belt driven motors have crazy power at both bottom and top ands of the rpm curve. I personally like both hub and belt for different reasons. That’s the nice thing about he Carvon drives is that you can use full urethane wheels which is unlike any hub motor set up out there!
@givemeurmoney
@givemeurmoney 6 жыл бұрын
Carvon got my interest for that exact reason. When I first saw the Carvon Evo board online, I thought...wow best of both worlds. I love the ability to actually have the option to use different wheel setups. Also the power looked butter smooth. Please do a review on the EXO...I really would like to see a comprehensive review on how that board reacts under all conditions, especially hill climbing. One quick question, how are APS motors? I was thinking of their 6355 or 6374 motors. Seen solid builds with Trampa boards using them for their setups. Although mostly see TB and some BkB motors. Damn the struggle is real! Also, it is very confusing reading about ERPM combined with the right kv and battery. I read so much conflicting reports on what is the best "sweet spot" for a 10s and a 12s battery. Do you go with the 190kv or the 174kv or the 230kvs, LOL.. That is the problem with such a new community. Lots of information to sort through with many things constantly changing as developers, programmers get more R&D.
@BigKidsOfficial
@BigKidsOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
I've actually been speaking with Jerry over at Carvon and he has already promised me an EXO for review 😛. So, look out for a review in the near future! I've heard great things about APS. I've never personally used them. APS was one of the few original esk8 part vendors. I like their seal motors which will help with keeping debris out of the coils. Where do you live? If I were you'd i'd try to purchase from a vendor as near as possible to save on shipping. In regards to the motor, I'd always go for the 6374 motor, even if it's a dual. Think about it this way, when you purchase a computer with RAM you won't necessarily need all that memory. But when the time comes and you are gaming, listening to music, and downloading a movie...that RAM will come in handy. So with your board, a 6355 will be sufficient and if anything you'll go just as fast as the 6374. However, due to size the 6355 will be maxed out faster when doing strenuous climbs. Also, if you're running a 10s the 6355 will be fine, but when you run a 12 I anticipate the 6355 will run hot. What I've gathered is that with a lower voltage you'll want a higher KV. And with the higher voltage you'll want a bit lower KV. Now, that is not gospel but I've noticed that among boards. I've road both 10 and 12s on 190 and the only thing negative I noticed between the 2 is my motor running a bit hot. that can be alleviated with some setting adjustments in the VESC. Unfortunately, I don't have much to say about the 174 or 230kv. It sounds like you've done a lot of research which is awesome and is why i'm responding to you so long like this (i love talking shop).
@givemeurmoney
@givemeurmoney 6 жыл бұрын
I like you analogy! I thought the same about just going with 6374's and just using all that these motors will have to offer. I will definitely enjoy the added torque from start which will be great for the hills in my area. I am from the DC area so I will be looking hard at APS, TQ, and BKB's. I am leaning towards just sticking with TQ 6374 190kv and getting the TQ 218mm trucks. I should be sticking with the 10s for this setup. Although, this is where confusion happens with research. Plenty of folks have done the 12s on 6374's, but then you have some folks that say it will runs too hot. Ehh, I am going 12s with the 6374's...I will make sure to compensate on the VESC. I have noticed that with Trampa boards that many use 12s on dual 6374 setups unless they have high kv and run 6s,8s battery configurations for ungodly torque. I want to go with 12 mm belt and definitely going to need to a good set of 96a Bones as well as some 87a Nipples for different riding situations. RipeTide seems to be a good solution for the pivot cups on the 218TQ trucks. I heard the stock bushings are weak sauce when hitting the ranges of 30mph +. I want to carve when I am riding with my daughter on her electric scooter, and on my commutes I am pretty sure I am going to go all out. You have been a huge help. I will let you know how the build goes. At the end of the month I will start purchasing items. I will finally settle on the board, either LandYacht or Vanguard...(trampa idea will be round 2). Besides that, I have pretty much everything else decided upon. I was going for FOC's but I will save that on the second build as well. Thanks for all the help, fam! Can't wait for the next part!

Thanks for the support from Germany Brotha! Hope you're a subscriber. I'll have to answer your questions shortly since these are kinda questions that can have some long winded answers. 1. For a dual motor set up you will also need 2 VESC's. 2. Yes, you will need 2 VESC. 3. Yes, you will connect one VESC to another. One will be the Master and the other will be the Slave. You will only need one receiver and one RC Remote. 4. In order to configure 2 VESC you will configure one to be Master and the other to be Slave. I suggest you search the www.electric-skateboard.builders/ forum for more detailed info. Hope this helped! - Neil

Hey Geert! Thanks for stopping by and appreciate the comment. I do have a high amp BMS on another build I have. But, honestly, BMS's have mixed reviews especially if you're using it to discharge. If you're strictly using it for charging then using a balance charger is actually more accurate and more safe. Not to say I won't use a BMS but for charging BMS's have been known to fail. Just check out some of the budget boards for sale that have caught fire because a person left it plugged in over night.

Hmm that's interesting, I'm not that experienced and I want to build my own board soon. I thought the bms makes it so your stuff doesn't overheat when riding. @BigKidsOfficial

Using a BMS provides another point for possible error. It does balance charge the batteries without using an external balance charger. However, nothing is perfect. If this is your first build hook the batteries up in series, then connect it directly to your VESC. If you get sick of taking your batteries in and out and want a BMS do it later after you have some expirience. Good luck and feel free to comment if you have any more questions. - Neil

To be honest, this seems like it will add up to the total cost of a boosted board

I've problem when I try to make a motor detection it failed on the debug console it say : "Status : Bad Detection Result Received" . I tried to change battery cutoff start and end (to lower them) but didn't change anything ... I've a Torque 6355 Motor, 2x6S battery and this VESC : hobbyking.com/fr_fr/turnigy-sk8-esc-v4-12-for-electric-skateboard-conversion-w-bec.html I also try to update firmware but that didn't work also ... I'm pretty depressed .... My software is not exactly the same (think is more recent that your one). Do'n't know if it change somethng .

Sorry to hear. It's honestly hard for me to diagnose every person that runs into challenge. But keep you head up! I suggest you go to the esk8 forum www.electric-skateboard.builders. So many like minded individuals that may have had a very similar problem. Just read a lot before asking a question. Good luck! - Neil

why didn't you just use a rc esc/ electronic speed controller and then just plug that into the radio receiver. wouldn't that be cheaper and less latencies
@BigKidsOfficial
@BigKidsOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
An RC ESC was something eskater used on the past. However, what was missing there was smoother breaking for a larger weight and also regen braking. This is where the VESC came to be valuable. It was more specific to an esk8ers needs.

No disrespect, you were very polite. I’d like to argue by asking what your definition of better is since it’s a subjective. I can then explain why I may feel this is better as well.
@colourfulpixels6897

Big Kids yeah your right this can be better and its probably way more fun to build a board and all that. What i wanted to say is that it is easier and cheaper but arguably better. I wanted to build a board a while back but saw that i could just buy a meepo board and began to think about "what if something goes wrong" with my build and i payed loads of money for nothing and decided to buy one instead. But back when i wanted to build an esk8 your channel was my go to place for info and tutorials
@BigKidsOfficial
@BigKidsOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
Aww that’s great to hear man! Thanks 🙏I appreciate it! Buying a Meepo is absolutely your cheapest option. Also, it’s not a terrible option if you are first breaking into esk8ing. However, depending on your goals, a Meepo also may or may not be your best option. My goals as a beginner esk8er may be different then some as well. I wanted a faster board then a Boosted/Evolve, I wanted to understand how ESk8s work, I wanted to learn new skills that can transfer to other things, etc. My current board high speed is 33mph, and was a little more than half the price than a Boosted, when something goes wrong I never have to send it anywhere for maintenance as I’ve learned all the skill needed to fix my board, and lastly, I came up with channel to share my love for esk8 because of my first build. With that said...I still own a Meepo, LOL. My favorite thing about Esk8ing in general is that wether you have a production board or DIY board, your imagination can fuel the fire for you to mod or build “the best” board for yourself! Hope you are enjoying your board! LOL 😂 sorry for the rant.

DIY at it's best! You're only limited by your imagination. Instead of calling support or trashing the board all it took was a little research, money, and some elbo grease and boom you got a wicked board again. Glad the videos had helpped bro! - Neil

you put your battery cut off at 35, not 3.5
@BigKidsOfficial
@BigKidsOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
Because 3.5 volts per cell. 10 cells x 3.5v = 35volts as cut off. Sorry if that wasn't clear
@thewizzerd4869
@thewizzerd4869 6 жыл бұрын
So what does cut-off mean then? I thought it was like on a laptop where you can have the battery turn off at 30% for example to not use as much battery. but if the voltage is 35V and you have the cut off at 35V this is not the same, so i am just confused on what the cut-off portion means. Thank you for response :)

VESC programming is pretty dry and stright forward info. Thanks for comment. Honestly, it's rude, but constructive. I put alot of work into this video series. And it's funny how people forget that behind the camera is a real human.

Great. The VESC itself costs as much as a cheap skateboard. That still might be okay if the board was potentially capable of surviving a minor accident. Too bad.
