Thank you. For drilling bdw I've used a soldering iron before. Mark the circular holes, set temperature if possible to around 350 C, use the razor looking tip and melt slightly inside the marked lines, surprisingly clean cuts, no burr and no fear of cracking. Any uneven cuts can be melted back using the iron (which is why cut slightly inwards). Keep a wet rag handy to wipe the solder tip if too much material gets on it.

Yes you can put ShroomTek in a tub and could add substrate for more nutrients / potentially more mushrooms 👍
@JillKnapp2 ай бұрын
Dumb question: When you add the casing layer on top of your fully-colonized bulk substrate, what prevents the mycelium from trying to then colonize the new casing layer? Wouldn't that just make it expend more energy? Would putting bubblewrap over a non-cased substrate serve the same "leaves on the forest floor" purpose? Thanks!
@NorthSporeАй бұрын
Casing layers can become fully colonized by the mycelium, a phenomenon known as ‘overlay’ in the mushroom community. To prevent overlay, you want to introduce fruiting conditions/triggers as soon as you notice some signs of the mycelium making its way to the surface. I would not recommend using bubble wrap since it's not breathable. The point of the casing layer is to help maintain a more consistent surface humidity (which helps healthy pin formation), while being breathable to still allow for gas exchange.

We really don’t use it much beyond experiments because we have large autoclaves (industrial pressure cookers) as well as smaller but still beefy All-American pressure cookers that would be better for most purposes. That said, as long as the Instant Pot has a pressure cook function (I think this one does), it could be used for sterilizing many different materials. Sometimes we just use it to make dinner 😂

I have a question, so I want to grow some mushrooms and I can see lots of people using monotubs, is it safe to just grow them indoors without any ventilation? I have just seen in other methods of growing like martha tents and any larger setps they require some way of filtering out the spores, usually a fan with a filter or leading outside. I am just confused if the filter patches are sufficient protection, I am thinking specifically about growing larger amounts so I don't want to be having tonnes of spores in the house and end up getting ill.

Something I wanna know. Is it possible to use the spores of the mushroom to grow more or are you locked into having to constantly buy the cultures if you want to grow more of them? Cuz that is legit my biggest problem, the worry about the cost of having to constantly buy and probably import those mushrooms in. If I only have to do it once and then re create them using their own spores then it's a lot easier to and viable for me.
@NorthSporeАй бұрын
This is definitely possible, but more challenging. The best way to expand and keep a culture is to clone it! Much easier & avoids any potential issues that can arise from new genetics.

@NorthSpore2 ай бұрын
We’ve designed our monotub to have maximum versatility! With more holes it can better regulate airflow especially if you’re growing culinary species that want more air. What you’re describing can totally work though! Also, many differently sized tubs are possible. It’s all about the principles of the tub and whether the needs of the mushroom species are satisfied 🙂
@Kyle3x19 күн бұрын
For a 2.5 lb spawn bag you add 4:1 ratio of substrate?
@NorthSpore11 күн бұрын
Our sterilized grain bags are 3 lbs and we’d usually recommend using 2-3 substrate bags. At 5lbs a bag using 3 of them, we’re talking about a 5:1 ratio. If you want to use 2 bags of substrate (and I usually do this) for a higher spawn rate, closer to 3:1, go for it 👍

If you're going to use a liner to prevent side-pinning, you want a very thin, limp plastic bag. A tall kitchen bag is ideal, the thinner and cheaper the better (and unscented). Get the cheapest box of store-brand tall kitchen bags you can find. Liners prevent side pins by adhering to the cake, such that there are no little voids along the wall and bottom of tub with favorable microclimates for pinning. A very thin liner will continue to adhere to the cake as it contracts. A thick liner is less pliable and it will not adhere properly to a shrinking cake. And, yeah, the color of the plastic liner does not matter. Light does not cause side pinning -- humid voids do. Even with a perfectly adhering liner, sometimes a few of the little buggers will just pin on the side anyway, making their own room. Better the surface conditions, the higher percentage of the flush will be where you want them to be.

I think I made a slight mistake on my second grow. I added coco coir after full bin inoculation of the monotub but before any pinning showed. My mushrooms are growing all around the outside of the bin but not in the center. Mostly in front of the fan ( i have your full fancy dancy kit). I feel like maybe the coco coir stopped air flow? Because closer to the fan they are growing great and all around the furthest edge of the bin they are also growing great. I didnt do an overly thick layer but I dont know. I tried removing a bunch of the coco coir a few days ago but still no pinning in that central area. Might skip coco coir on the next batch or just do it super thin and wait until i see pinning starting. Your thoughts?
@NorthSpore11 күн бұрын
It sounds like several things could be at play. For one thing, your coir layer could be thick - ½” is all that’s really needed. Along with that, you probably have a moisture issue. Did you hydrate the coir properly? Make sure the humidity is up around 90% inside as well. They don’t need much air, so I think it has more to do with moist microclimates along the edges. The species you are growing definitely matters here, but if you’re growing manure loving medicinal species, I feel good about this advice. Don’t hesitate to reach out to our team at info@northspore.com to discuss this further.
