How to Build a DIY Pull Out Trash Can in a Kitchen Cabinet - Easy Kitchen DIY Project

In this video I build a custom made garbage and recycling pull out drawer using one of the cabinets in my kitchen. This an easy DIY project and is a great way to store your trash cans in a place that is hidden and out of the way.

I installed the REV-A-SHELF single can unit, smaller space next to sink, and had to put a thin shim under the front bracket so that the unit didn't keep sliding open. I'm going to use your video to make some pull out drawers for my pantry and under counter pots and pans storage.

Good job, Thank you! I have the garbage cabinet already, but it's one where you open the cabinet door (hinged), then you pull out the garbage cans that are in a metal basket that is on rails, similar to the ones you installed. I want the cabinet door to be attached to the basket so it one motion to reveal the garbage cans. Currently I have to open the cabinet door, then pull out the sliding basket to get to the garbage. Anyway, thanks a lot for the instructional vid.

Great video, I've seen many more showing very fancy drawers but you need to have $12,000 in equipment to build them, far from a regular tools a homeowner has.

I like how you have it hanging instead of attached to the bottom. One question; with the weight of the trash cans sitting on melamine, aren't you concerned that in time the weight of the trash will break it?

If the trash gets full with something heavy then it does start to sag the drawer slide a bit (even though they are rated at 100 lbs.!), but it doesn't impact the melamine at all. It still looks the same as the day I put it in.

Did you just use regular old drawer slides or are they something specific?

Nope. They are just regular full extension drawer slides that are supposed to hold 100 lbs.

The short answer is yes, but it may be a bit more complicated. Most dishwasher openings are just holes in the cabinet. There is no door or toe kick or bottom shelf. Sometimes the floors aren't even finished underneath. If you want it to work you would have to solve for those problems or it will look awful and that may be more work/money than it is worth.

Your bin is not covered, the smell will be terrible over the time inside your shelves and it will spread to other shelves too.

I understand you're concern, but the garbage can has been in place noe for years and the smell has never been an issue; first because I have four kids and so the garbage gets taken out pretty regularly. Second, this cabinet is secluded and so the smell is contained. The cabinet right next to it is under the sink and it does not connect to the cabinet above and when the door is shut you really can't smell it. All in all it is much better than the alternative which was to have the cans in the pantry or out in the open.
