I don't usually comment on YT but this design is the best I've seen, nothing against all the other amazing inventors but this design is very ingenious. Good job Bauer!

Thanks BauerMECH for this great tutorial. Built this today with a few layman's modifications which allowed me to get everything from a HomeDepot/Lowes type store. Swapped conduit for aluminum. Adds some weight but by no means too much. No bearings, just the nylon washers/fender washers. To bend the camera mount, heated the area of the bend with a butane plumbers torch then bent in a vice. Used a much sturdier PA speaker stand with a tripod head attached. Did not use the interior rods. And for the piece that mounts to the tripod head, used a Simpson Strong-Tie Z-Max 16 in 12-gauge found at Home Depot, cut it in half and welded it to a 1-1/2 in piece of flat steel with a piece of angle as gusset (not so layman but none of the hardware stores carried aluminum stock as thick or as wide as required). I hope these mods can help someone in the future. Thanks again for the tutorial.

I see you have a lot of accolades and rightfully so! I have never taken the time to comment on frugal before, but there is a lot to talk about here, but I won't cover it all. There is a lot of communication going on here. First, the pithy way you have presented the information. Second, your knowledge of many skills. Third, your use of color to save a lot of words to explain what you are talking about. Fourth, it is the "little things " that count which in this case are many. For instance the simple use of your background which may have been luck but it made for "easy on the eyes background." Finally your command of logic in your presentation. There is a lot more but I digress. Who in the world would spend this much time to give to the folks with nothing in it for you other than sharing? Great job!

@BauerMECH10 жыл бұрын
Most of the stuff you can find at Lowes, Menard's, or Home Depot. You could order parts online from McMaster-Carr or Grainger as well, but you'll prob be paying a little extra for the "convenience".

Nice job man! What software do you use to edit your videos?

Thanks everyone for the kind compliments! The whole thing weighs something like 2lbs (about 1kg). I cut mine down to a 6ft crane and get about the same range as the 8ft by simply extending one set of my tripod's legs. It's much more stable and doesn't require nearly the amount of counter-weights. @ Shadi Maanna... Well, you technically could install a wheel on the front of the crane, but it kinda' defeats the purpose of this type of build. You don't need a wheel system because the tilting of the tripod's head does what a pulley/wheel would do otherwise. No need for additional rigging, cables, pulleys, etc.
+Edward kwang Yes, well... sort of. It really is 2lbs, just converted kg's the wrong direction, lol. Made the edit. Thanks.

No auto-tilt? Why on earth not?! That's really bad engineering. With THAT tripod head, you NEVER get a smooth tilt while jibbing at the same time, … unless you use a 10mm fisheye lens. Good to adjust tilt, but unusable for jib-tilting. Auto tilt is much better here. And those brackets in the middle … I am led to believe, they add more weight than stability.
@AerialLensVideo10 жыл бұрын
Really good - Thank you.
@AShotAtLife9 жыл бұрын
This is really cool! Do you have any test footage with it?!
For the camera mounting bracket, you used 5052 .125" bar stock. Would 6063 be a suitable substitute? I'm assuming 6061 might be too brittle for a 90 degree bend in a metal brake.
@BauerMECH10 жыл бұрын
Yes, 6061 will show tiny fractures if you put hard bends in it. It's not real critical since there's not a huge payload, but still... It would be structurally weaker than the rest. 5052 is perfect for bending.
@icin4d10 жыл бұрын
BauerMECH Thank you for your response. I start building my version of your rig tomorrow, which will use the 1"x2" top bar. I did find some 5052 for the bracket and I'll probably tig weld a small support on the bottom to eliminate the need for the .5" round bar stock support. Since that 8'x1"x2" weights in at a hefty 6.5 pounds, I'm going to hammer in a wood plug (at your 21" mark) and drill through that so I can press a bronze bushing into it.

This is a fantastic design. Can you share info on the tripod maker?
@BauerMECH5 жыл бұрын
Jon Detka thanks! I really can’t recall the specific brand. It was a relatively inexpensive fluid ball head video tripod I picked up on Amazon many years ago. Unfortunately, I don’t see it listed anymore.

@@BauerMECH Good to know. I'll keep an eye out for deals. I am considering making one that is a little longer 10-15' with a counter weighting. I have a challenge with my research site being so close to an airport and not being able to fly drones (even at low altitude). I basically need to get still shots from about 12-15' height looking downward. I like your rigging as it will let me adjust camera angle easily and pan. Thanks again for the video. JD

Could I make a smaller version because where i'm going too shoot, i will not have that much space available (indoors)
@BauerMECH9 жыл бұрын
+Alfred Dubois Of course. In fact, I took two feet off of mine & extended one set of legs on the tripod. Has just about as much range as the 8-footer, but much easier to transport.

@BauerMECH10 жыл бұрын
Yup, you've got it. It can be any size you want, really. Just scale the tube lengths and keep the rest of the dimensions the same... you should be fine. Resources for parts were listed in a previous comment. Hardware stores and/or internet.

Very Nice Tutorial I Definitely Want to Go With This Just Wanted To Know A Few Things Before I Do What Type Or Name Of The Tripod You Have I Want It To Be Mounted Just The Way You Have It & What Would You Say Is The Max Weight The Crane Can Hold & if i wanted to make it to be 15ft What Changes Would I Haft To Make Other Then Making The Tubes Longer
@BauerMECH9 жыл бұрын
+KingzCity T.V. if you make the crane bigger, you're gonna have to get a much bulkier tripod. The one I'm using is barely enough to keep the 8-footer stable. Other than making the tubes longer, I'd use rectangular tubing for the beams... prob 1x2's. That may mean you'd also have to increase the length of your cross-members. Depending on where you drill your holes on the beams, the holes on the cross-members will have to be gapped one to two inches further away from one another.

Matt OUTSTANDING rig and video, man. The whole deal ! But one question for those of us who do not have the machining skill/tools you have. Instead of all the fabrication that you did on TRIPOD MOUNT/ARMITURE part, do you see any problems with just bending some bar stock, putting a gusset at the bend for strength/rigidity --- much like you did --- and calling it a day ? Once again, great video.
@BauerMECH9 жыл бұрын
+Dan Little Yes, you certainly could do that. It's really important to have the tripod tilt and crane axes line up with one another, so as long as you've go that there'll be no issues on how you do it. The tripod mounting plate was thick 6061 alloy & will produce hairline cracks along the radius if bent (just from the stress of bending it). You'd have better luck bending 5052 alloy, but you'll need a hefty brake... hydraulic or something.

+LADOM BILLIONS - Easier to drill yes, but also much flimsier. Any length over, say, a couple feet and the load of the camera will bend the beams... you'll get up & down as well as side-to-side wobble.

Yeah, it is a shame... unfortunately, some years back I clicked on a “this video is 3D” checkbox in the KZbin Editor to see what it’d do. Well, whatever that did, it seems there was no going back... after unchecking the box, some devices still pull up a zoomed in video with mal-aligned red and cyan overlays- trying to make the video 3D. Apart from uploading a new vid, idk what else I could do.
