I have installed this same set-up in my basement shop based on this video. I have 4 drops and about 40' of PVC pipe runs. I encountered two issue that have been easily corrected. First, without glueing or securing the PVC vertical connections they can apart, I ended up using PVC glue to keep the vertical drop connections together. Second, the dust bag that comes with the dust right unit clogged with dust and greatly reduced the suction power. Even clean the bag with compressed air would only help for a few days then it would clog up again. I upgraded the bag to the canister filter and have been running it for two weeks with no issues. For a home DIY woodworker this is a great solution.

I'm currently "mentally designing" a similar system for my garage/workshop and plan to use many of your ideas. I liked your use of available components. A few commenters questioned the PVC size chosen. My rationale is to use a smaller size plumbing, based on the knowledge I'll only be using only ONE power tool at any given time. Also, my "workshop" is substantially smaller, so I see no real need for the larger setup in mine. I also liked the use of "shutoff's" at each port. I loved the homemade mounting brackets. GREAT, simple design, that looks good and functions well. In regard to the static build up issue, I understand the principle, but I also agree there seems to be no verifiable instance(s) of an explosion in a garage workshop. Still, I may opt to incorporate some sort of grounding system in mine to completely eliminate any chance of static buildup. Thankfully, I have access to a significant amount of FREE copper wire for this. I see this as carrying a handgun and hopefully never needing it, but it's worth more than it's weight in gold if/when you do. ELIMINATE that possibility as I see it... ESPECIALLY since the anti-static components are free. Why NOT do it, right? Thanks for a good video. :-)

if you get the thinner walled white or green pipe, you can use a heat gun to expand or contract the PVC to the size fitting you need.

Nice setup! I just got one of the Rockler vacuums over the weekend and am now researching systems. I like the system you used to hold the pipes also. I’m probably going to vent to the outside since that is better than using a bag. Good video and thanks for the information

I'm also venting mine outside but I'm installing a "Y" fitting along with a blast gate in both pipes that way I can choose if I want to vent outside or use to HEPA filter in extreme temps. Options are always good and since you're cutting a hole in your wall anyway you might as well install the HEPA filter that goes with your vacuum.

You might want to get a bigger vacuum. This thing isn't rated to move the CFM needed. Most 2 stage systems want at least 800+ cfm to run correctly.

Thank you so much. This was a lot of good information. I make custom hand forged knives and my biggest problem is trying to keep my shop clean from all the dust that collects in my little shop. I have a collection system that just isn't put together correctly. This video will help a lot. By the way I read a lot of these responses and some of you folks need to lighten up a bit. You don't like something? Don;'t be so damned critical. Why don't you guys put something better out there? Because you can't!

For static electricity i would run a 14 awg bare wire with in the pies and connect it to the outlets ground on few ends. That would provide sufficient grounding throughout the system.

Look for DWV pvc, it's a very thin wall and will hit over most of your dust collection accessories. there are also connectors called 'street' connectors, that have one end that goes on the outside of the pipe and the other will fit inside the pipe. that will help you fit many accessories that the DWV pipe doesn't fit on it's own.

Now that you've had it for a year, how do you like you system? Do the blast gates work reliably without sawdust jamming up in them? Is your first stage trash can doing as good as you hoped? Is the wall unit still holding up? Do you wish you had done anything differently than what is in the video? I'm looking at doing a system similar to yours and would like to learn from your experiences.

great video, about the pipe by the belt sander. if you put a 45 fitting on the end and that should allow the hose to stay on better, and sticking the hose on should be easier also.

I would like to add to the discussion of PVC systems and the build up of electrical static charge. I have watched many systems that have been posted on KZbin regarding grounding to prevent fires and explosive situations. The only thing that I could find with OSHA is that if the cyclone system is over 10ft in length the collection spot must be located outside of the building. Might want to put a screen in that pan under the belt grinder in case you drop something your working on. That vacuum will suck it right up.

Go get a tube of Wedi sealant to stick that lid down. It seals, adheres and stays flexible. Very good product

I know some other people have commented on this, but do you think you could add a note to your description that it would be best to ground the piping so that static buildup can be discharged? PVC or ABS dust evacuation systems are notorious for electrical buildup, and for people that use electronically controlled (like the festool variable speed tools) power tools, the shock can damage the tools

I've seen a few videos about PVC dust collection systems lately, where all had to be grounded, to prevent static electricity building up and potentially creating a dust-fire. Do you have a specific reason why you didn't do this?

My guess is that he didn't try to ground it because grounding PVC is literally impossible without encasing every inch of pipe in metal. PVC is an insulator, so grounding it really isn't necessary (or possible).

My suggestion for the connecting of the lids on the trash end of the system: coat the other side of the foam tape you used on the underside of the lid, but coat it with contact cement, let dry, also coat the lid it will be installed on, then the two lids will be connected properly and sealed .

Nice tips, but here in 2022 I used SDR 35 drain pipe for my 6" main and then split into 2 - 4" sub runs in the shop for my Grizzy G0944 (1-micron canister w/Super Dust Deputy separator in front). Much cheaper than SCH 40 pipe & fittings and the typical connectors available from manufacturers like PowerTec, HQRP, etc. fit perfectly without need for the special ones. Another benefit of SDR 35 is it is even lighter and easier to cut than SCH 40. The cost of SCH 40 in 2022 is crazy expensive... a 10' foot section of 6" will run $100+, whereas SDR 35 runs about $60. The downside... it is blue/green and not white like the fittings. ;)

You put a lot of effort and work into the video and your system. I have the same Rockler vac and it does not generate enough suction to effectively run the pipe system you have - especially with the 90 degree bends you have. In fact it loses strength on a single hose and an Oneda cyclone in between

Just wanted to give some hacks I use that are cheaper and quicker. 4” j-hook to hang pipe are 80¢ at Grainger and I like in Alaska which is normally more expensive than the lower 48. Also look under Clevis hanger, pipe tie, pipe strap, conduit hanger, strut clamps- hell even metal strapping will work. Also you can use a 4” roof pipe flashing they’re $8 and can be bent to help hone in the dust. However you’re only as good as the blower motor... don’t skimp on that. I wouldn’t go less than 2 HP. And you can section off the area to dampen sound with a zipwall.

Shoe goo! Will work! Most adhesives won't stick to polyethylene but shoe goo should do the job. It's flexible too!

I have seen a lot of comments about folks concerned about grounding to prevent static, it is simply not necessary. Test have been conducted to replicate a dust explosion within pvc pipe with no success. grounding something that isn't conductive is very tricky to do.

BTW: I was at my table saw last week... 50 hp all overhead metal blowpipe. The last 20 feet or so of the drop is 4" flexible hose (plastic, with metal spiral rib). Enough charge was accumulating on the embedded metal spiral for me to see it arcing when I touched to end to the saw housing. Very small, but visible arc.

cchaffin2012 I used to hear of people running a single copper wire down the inside of the PVC and then bringing it out to a ground. Is that no longer considered an option?

If you use duct seal tape, not duck-tape, it will help seal the system as we as being useful on your pipe joints. This is a silver tape used on duct work. The system will work much better by sealing off all the little leaks.

How's the static electricity build up on that system? I set one up for my dad a couple years ago. Somewhat similar to yours but smaller and we had to end up grounding the PVC to reduce static. I think we were using schedule 80, but that's not going to effect the static.

try dow corning 795 caulk be sure to clean everything with denatured alcohol first. 795 is good for 150 MPhil wind on glazing systems. 50yr warranty

I want to use the schedule 40 PVC from home depot...but need help to select the accessories to help me with fittings...like you said, the PVC openings are too large. Is the woodstock 4" splice going to work for me to fit the PVC opening, then reduce it to fit the 4" tubing I already own? Need some help and appreciate any y ou can offer! I'm on the 3rd watch of your video! I have a delta 1.5hp dust collector and 3 main power tools to connect....miter saw, table saw and router...then a few sanders and such

Nice job great system I have one concern you are sucking hot metal from your grinder that could be a possible fire hazard I know with all the wind and pressure that by the time it hits the collection bin the metal would have cooled off but still a bit risky otherwise great system

You can save a TON of money using sewer pipe instead of schedule 40. Schedule 40 is for “High Pressure.” You don’t need that for a dust collection system. You also need a good filter vs a bag. Bags don’t filter near small enough dust particles to help out with allergens in the air..

Hi! Why don't use water pipes, they are thicker. I think the shopvap could make more pressure with them. Also there are water gates for water pipes already in the market. They are a bit expensive but is an already made solution.

How well does this pick up metal dust then? My KMG spits out a lot of very hot steel dust. I want to make something like this for my future shop as all of my grinding is done out doors currently but that will change soon. I am concerned about the hot sparks generated and hitting the plastic and subsequently being drawn into the entire system. My grinder also doubles as my knife handle shaper and I also think about steel dust mixing with wood dust and catching fire too. I am thinking that when I make my setup I will be using a metal funnel similar to what you have with metal piping for maybe the first five feet or so. Maybe I am paranoid but I don't want a fire and I know neither do you. I am also considering making all sanding and grinding operations into one dirty room so to speak. I guess I am asking how is this setup working for you currently? Finally, have you done anything to mitigate static spark buildup in the system? I didn't know anything about it until a couple of days ago. Thank you for making this video it has given me a lot to think about and consider and I sure appreciate where you are going with this.

I have seen several comments about Static Electricity off the PVC causing dust fires. Old video, but for the posterity, many may be surprised that a good old high temp hot glue will hold on to these hard to glue plastics (LDPE and HDPE) of thrash cans and 5 gallon buckets better than silicone and perhaps even polyurethane adhesive, especially the crappy gorilla glue type that foams and gets hard.

Well yes and no. The capacity of the vacuum motor and its intake determine how many cubic feet per minute it pulls, the pipe diameter that connects the intake to that motor (4" vs 3" vs whatever) will determine the velocity or speed with which the air moves down the pipe. Narrower pipe will work fine, but the air will move at a higher speed, which means the intake velocity will be higher. That would make it work better as a vacuum as it can pick up things like those wire nuts more easily. The higher velocity would mean the air flow would be a bit louder (not the motor). But more critical is probably just being able to find the fittings that work for you.

I imagine that is because if you have neighbors (or a wife) they will get PISSED if you are blowing debris and sawdust etc out into the community air. Its better to collect it and dispose via landfill or compost (if its just sawdust).

Considering that dust from many kinds of wood (plywood, MDF, etc.) is toxic, you would not only be putting other peoples health at risk, but you would be opening yourself up to a lawsuit from any neighbors that may come down with any lung issues. on top of that, you would be an A-hole for blowing dust all over/in your neighbors houses and cars.

What you blow outside depends upon the system. A well-designed two-stage system leaves little dust in the exhaust. I ran the exhaust from a 2 h.p. Oneida two-stage system outside. I filled and emptied the barrel several times. Sometimes I had visible dust on the ground below the exhaust, but rarely. Neighbors had no reason to know what came out of that duct, much less complain. The harmful fine particles disburse in the vast outdoor air system. Unlike collecting them in an enclosed shop, no one is exposed to a concentration that would pose danger of lung disease. That being said, my new shop uses a very fine filter from Oneida (rather than blowing air outside) so I am not exchanging hot outside air for my cooler shop air.

IMHO 100% silicone for the trashcan. Schedule 35 pvc would work, is cheaper and uses less fittings, just not available at Home Depot.

Awesome setup. Thanks for sharing. I've been doing research for the better part of a month and the equipment you've chosen are the exact same that I feel offer the best bang for my bucks. I'm not sure if I should go with the Powertech, Shop Fox, or spend the little extra on the Rockler though. A couple questions; do you think that a standard furnace filter could be cut to use as a replacement for the outer filter on the Wen air cleaner? And could you PLEASE do a video on the Vacumaid pro? There aren't any thorough reviews. I really want to get one, but I could get 2 top of the line shop vacs for the $315. Having it off the floor and 30 or 50ft of vacuum hose would be sweet, but is it worth it? Does it provide the same suction as a regular vacuum?

how do i remove lingering sawdust from a small room? i used a hole saw to make a small hole in a wooden box and the sawdust has been lingering around. it was a small project so i worked on it on the restroom sink counter. now every time i take a shower, the sawdust smell comes out and i can feel the sawdust in my nose and mouth. it only comes out when the shower is started. i've tried vacuuming and thought i got rid of it but its still around..
