Club racing has changed a lot since I started back in the 80s. From riding the bike to the track and taping the lights up to motorhomes that wouldn't look out of place parked next to John McGuinness's.

Great meeting up with you last Tuesday at Obsession engineering, thanks for the hat, great birthday present from my wife, who went and sat in the car, because we were talking bike’s, or a foreign language according to her! . 😊

Ray Stringer does some really good adjustable velocity stacks. I think he has done one or two RS660's fairly recently and got some really good power... But Ray does his thing and how reliable they are really does depend on how often you rebuild the motor.. I know what you mean about the Rapid Bike kit.. I ran it and a power commander on the Nurburgring lap record Suzuki GSXR600 I built and we ran it back to back with the Power Commander and as much potential as it had the Power Commander was the route we went and we just handed the Rapid Bike kit back as we had been given it for the lap record.

Oh Dave maybe you need to also give Rob some heated coveralls. You always seem to be layered up in your shop. For my shop in a very cold Oregon USA I use a propane heater. It seems to really help with concentration and productivity. Love your channel. Cheers Dave !.

A little thing i've found handy with footpeg bolts (besides locktite) is changing them to hex head bolts. They always seem to come with allen bolts so if they do come loose you have to remove the rearset to access, with a hex head you can just slip a spanner in behind - which is way less stressfull if needed between sessions!
@obsession_engineeringАй бұрын
Not quite as easy when they bolt through the peg as these do 😁

Always interesting! I'm so happy you are building another RS660 so I can learn about my bike. Does one need to drain the oil to put the engine covers on?
@obsession_engineeringАй бұрын
Nope, covers can be fitted without draining the oil, but the water drain point does get disturbed

You are dead right re tea break. It just lets things settle in your head so the next stage of a job can commence more easily. You unwind just for ten mins, very important. I'm a carpenter but tea break is just as relevant👍

Love the video and content Would it of been easier to buy an RS 660 Trofeo and use that as a base to work off rather than converting a Road bike ?

We were changing enough parts to make it better to start from scratch. Costs were similar though
@ShinysideupАй бұрын

@atroxell436Ай бұрын
this is a very impressive video. For how dominant the RS660 is as a Twins bike...it's an engineering nightmare
@obsession_engineeringАй бұрын
I'd argue they're very nicely engineered, but that has included saving weight by removing bits of frame that would normally make life easier
@atroxell436Ай бұрын
@@obsession_engineering the engineering is honestly incredible, the RS660s they run in the states with MotoAmerica are absurd...but from a quick first glance, it can seem overwhelming. It is also nice to hear about the fixes they made from early to late once the problems were discovered. Great video, definitely subbed because this kind of content is awesome to me 🤘
@bikeaddictbpАй бұрын
I watched this with interest, being more familiar with how Yamaha does things. A yamaha isn't bothered if the rear brake switch or lights are unplugged, you don't have to remove the swingarm to remove the engine, and you don't have to remove the swingarm to deal with the rearsets. And the tensioner for the timing chain is simpler (different video). The RS660 is faster than the R7 ever could be, on the other hand ...

Never had trouble with leaking oil filters who have a nut on top. Only use that nut to undo the oil filter when it needs changing, never to tighten the filter.
@obsession_engineeringАй бұрын
I've only seen it a couple of times, but that's more than enough to convince me
@bikeaddictbpАй бұрын
Locally we had a chap have one of those filters blow apart last year. I don't know if the hex was used to tighten the filter. Personally, I won't use oil filters with that hex, either.
@ianmills1120Ай бұрын
Did you consider remapping the ecu instead of adding the piggyback module? Lots of wires and extra connectors to fail on a power commander.
@obsession_engineeringАй бұрын
Yes, but I like the easy adjustable nature of the pc. Unless I invest more in mapping tooling, but then it gets very expensive

Your help please. Just built mine. Bitubo +15 cartridges in front. What length should I adjust my Bitubo XXZ to? FYI: forks are flush with triples as there is no adjustment room with Woodcraft triples/clip ons. Thanks
@obsession_engineeringАй бұрын
You bought the wrong clip ons then! I actually shortened my +15 kits by 8mm,so now only +7, and run them flush to the top clamp. Also depends what too clamp, as the spider version is stepped down slightly
@sfade6217Ай бұрын
Maybe so. I ended up raising the rear 15mm to equal the additional front height to keep stock geometry to start

@obsession_engineeringАй бұрын
No, it's a 660 only issue
@Gedv4TuonoАй бұрын
I’m lucky enough to have an RS660 extrema that use as a track bike (also ride it on the road, but not as much as my Tuono). It makes a great track bike for me, just moving up to inters from novice. I can’t help wondering, why choose the extrema as a ‘donor’ bike for a track project? Its a fair bit more expensive than a standard RS660, and as far as I can tell, you will be swapping out all the ‘nice’ bits? Loving the content Dave - just a bit confused 😂
@obsession_engineeringАй бұрын
Shifter map is already open for race shift, parts we've removed sold much easier and I suspect there was a deal too

Just out of interest how much of the new bike price was recovered from selling the road gear, pipe and plastics etc?

Not sure as the customer sold them, new fairing don't usually fatch much though, as most new bikes will be insured fully comp.

Thanks for the video. I'm considering this bike for racing. Slick tires are available in size 180/60 R17. Does the bike's software allow you to set such a configuration? Because the tire will have a larger circumference and the sensors will not receive the correct data - abs, etc. How is this resolved?
@obsession_engineeringАй бұрын
There's a calibration option in the dash for when tyre sizes, gearing, etc are changed
