Given how many close fits you have here, have you discovered the joy that is self-adhesive UHMW tape? I keep it on hand in a few thicknesses. When you have a couple of pieces of metal that you think might interfere, stick a chunk of the tape there. It will provide a self-lubricating wear layer that both prevents damage and serves as a witness mark so you know if contact is happening. It's also useful when you want metal to slide against other metal with relatively little friction, but there isn't enough friction to justify a more complex bearing.

@@SuperfastMatt when you use that stuff I have a tip. It's awesome but the self-adhesive part is kind of sarcastic unless you acetone clean the paint and heat up both the thing you're going to stick it to and the UHMW strip with a heat gun slightly before you adhere them. It makes a significant difference in how well they stick. If you're going to skip one of those and cut corners skip the cleaning more than the heating.

If I’m reading it right, the FIA record for 500cc unsupercharged wheel driven cars is only 138 mph, which doesn’t sound like a lot when you say it quickly. (As an aside, some of the 500cc supercharged records are held by a 1930s MG!) Those are probably both direction averages though, which makes things quite a bit more complicated, and I’m not so sure speed week events do that 2 way running, anyway.

Something that you may find interesting is that running a mechanical water pump actually robs a fair amount of HP from the engine. It could potentially be worth it to explore the idea of running an electronic water pump to cool the engine off of a slightly larger light weight lithium battery(only larger if you decide to not run the rectifier for your runs). This method is newly being used in professional motocross where it’s gaining 3-5hp in 250cc single cylinders(this is with the little bit of extra draw from the stator). I imagine you could pick up a somewhat significant amount of hp for a very small amount of added weight. Especially with how much water is being pushed through that motor and the rectifier disconnected. Usually the impeller is just removed from the water pump and the shaft seal remains.

A lot of drag racer engines in some of the more "street" classes are cooled by an "ice box," which is essentially what you have already, just add ice. They run this "ice water" into the engine block. Doing that and eliminating the heat exchanger will be way more efficient. This gives you another 40 or 50 degrees lower water temp on the cool side.

Today I learned "Engineering Intuition" means "Add more struts". Also, if you're contemplating disconnecting your battery from its charger at high RPM, you may want to consider the weight and charge/discharge efficiencies of replacing the battery with a small super capacitor bank. You will need to jumpstart the engine from something else, but once it does start, it will run significantly better than with a lossy Lead-Acid charge/discharge cycle. Works Cited: My riding mower.

Just my 2 cents: The OEM Regulator/Rectifier will be a diode shunt regulator, wasting some 30-60W of Power once the Battery is full. If you care, either buy one of the MOSFET Series-Regulators (less power losses) or place the relay between one of the three input phases from the alternator. The latter (cutting one of the phases) is sometimes done in "professional" racing. BTW nice project :)

Since you had SCS make the exhaust flanges (not phalanges) you could also have had them make a dummy head for welding the exhaust. Also, do you use a gas lens on your TIG torch? The extra gas flow should help with the dark, grainy stainless welds, which is a sign of overheating the weld pool. Ironically, using more amps and manually pulsing the pedal (or using pulse if your welder has it) will also help with the overheating.

In front of the driver cage, there would ideally be a 'crush zone'. This implies not using simple longitudinal girders, but an angled-element (foldable) design that can smoothly crush for a more comfortable crash. Advanced designs would limit peak deacceleration force. Yes, acknowledge that it'll be run in an open area, but still... If there's a tree within 200 miles it'll eventually crash into it.

I've been in the garage for the last four years restoring a Morris Minor Traveller and used lockdown as an excuse to disappear for two of those years. It won't set any speed records - but wait maybe the fastest Morris in my house : )

It looks like you have raw steel and raw aluminum sandwiched together. This is not a good combination for galvanic corrosion. I'm guessing the salt flats won't be much help there either. Anyway, just thought I would mention that you might want to put a coating on those things or something.

So... a thought... If you're going to use a 4 cylinder engine that's bigger than you need for the class you want to race, and you're already planning on deactivating some of the cylinders, it's possible to use two of the cylinders as a sort of supercharger. You'd have to somehow either replace the existing valves on those cylinders with reed valves, or - the "easier" route - you can have a camshaft ground with extra lobes for the cylinders you're using to pump air on what would ordinarily be the compression and power strokes. If you've already got extra pistons moving up and down, you may as well use them as a compressor to get some extra horsepower.

they'd have to have larger displacement to the running cylinders for it to work (or more cylinders for that than what are running). Also I think it would kick it into a different class of racing if it's supercharged.

@@lasskinn474 With correct valving - see my camshaft comment - the inop cylinders will provide ~1x volume each revolution. The cylinders still firing only take in an air charge every other revolution. Bart Crauwels converted the vertical cylinder on a Ducati 1000DS motor into a compressor and called it the V One. There's a 2009 article on The Kneeslider that mentions the 498cc single making 15 horses more than the stock engine.

Just watched the newest video, love your work. One concern though - are you sure the flange that holds the center pin for the front suspension is strong enough? Time 7:11. A by-eye free-body diagram suggests that the flange has to support about 1.5x the dynamic load of the front wheels during a bump (input load is upwards on rear link, upwards on forward link with the struts, down in the middle pin). The flange's bearing surface looks pretty small, and it looks like it's welded to a cross-beam welded in shear (can't see if it's traingulated...). Could be fine, but might be worth double-checking. All hail the algorithm.

I have been wondering if send, cut, send would be able to accurately cut sprockets out of a thick piece of steel or cut thin pieces of steel that could then be layered and bolted together to make a sprocket. Your machining of the sprocket makes me think that is a no. Or maybe something you simply overlooked. Amazing build keep up the progress.
