@GPact644 жыл бұрын
Really helpful Rodian. I'm halfway through my build, and have laid the concrete base, cut my voussoirs, and currently sorting my half-bats. I've never laid a brick in my life, so we'll see how it goes... Question. Should I drill a few holes in the base for drainage, (I laid hardcore prior to pouring the concrete) or leave a gap or two in my courses to let water run off?

dude before the base sets cut a hole in it in the middle and fit underground a air pipe to out side the pit this will stop it smoking everyone out and you can damp the fire or make it burn more by covering or un covering the air intake tube. great work as allays dude.
@MrMiss4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, can you elaborate more on the pipe you are talking about? How is it installed exactly and Where does it leave the pit and what type of material does the pipe need to be made of? Sorry just a diyer that plans on building one. Many thanks

Gary Douglas hi Gary I was also gonna mention the same thing. To sustain fire you need spark then air and fuel. The inlet spoken about is a small air hole low level in the fire to feed it for a clean burn. My best advice here is to look at another video of something called a Dakota fire pit. I sometimes dig them out wile camping all you need to see is the theory behind how it works and relay it onto this project. This fire will work fine but it’s muck better with air inlets. I’d use a core can to drill them in maybe every four bricks around at fire base level. Basically it’s a bellow hope this makes some sense to you mate

If you add vent pipes coming in from the bottom, you wont smoke everyone out. You can actually add an in-line fan to get the fire hotter, start faster or get it going easier. Other than that, great job.

building one myself but with stone i got myself from a renovation in chepstow. costing me 30 quid in sand an cement. its a 42 inch diameter pit. one thing about the firepit is that to be it smokeless , is to have a breathing hole on one face on the ground then it can draw air in and be smokless. You also need drainage so its best to just have made a footing at your desired width 360 round.

Little tip mate , make a strip foundation instead of a slab , the water can't drain , when you set out , drive a long stake in centre and this can stay for the whole process of the job , the trammel should have marked on it ,the foundation position and the brickwork position once you mark the footing and dig it and concrete it , the peg is still in the centre undisturbed you can place the trammel back with the brickwork position

@NotHolierThanThou4 жыл бұрын
Soooo ... maybe I missed it, but do you rely on the brickwork (mortar, really) to be porous enough to drain, and to where will it drain since the pad is below grade? It looks like it might become a great, detoxifying, charcoal-filled bath tub eventually, once sediments started to fill the pores in the masonry. I dunno, what do I know? I'm no pro, for sure. Just looks like it might catch and hold water, and especially between lower courses. Did you leave a few ends "unbuttered" maybe to weep?

To find the center easily, draw one line more than half the diameter of the slab, and another perpendicular to the first. Then bisect the lines and connect the dots. Where they intersect is the center.

I like that and especially the bricks which appear to be a yellow multi of some sort, ( which sort ) I am not a bricklayer but have built various buildings here at home which are rendered block work to match the house and a long curved garden wall in face bricks. I am building a Summer House and would particularly like to finish it in poly-chromatic brickwork which used to be quite popular here in East Anglia. I thought yellow multi's and soft red bricks around the windows and doors and of course the corners and wondered if you could feature something like this in one of your vids as nobody else seems to have done this. Your House build bricks would be the perfect colour to use and have that aged look. Sorry this is so long.
@RodianBuilds4 жыл бұрын
I think the yellows with red accents on the corners and around windows is a nice look for sure! The bricks I used are called imitation stocks. They are basically brand new stocks but made in the traditional way, by hand. Beautiful to look at it a bit tricky to lay.
