@sjrowan5 жыл бұрын
I would love to build something similar, but I am wondering if the structure will stay level over time without sunken footings.
@amsivertson5 жыл бұрын
Stejay it can stay level for years, if done right. Check your local building codes. There are limits to height and weight of deck when using surface footings, along with what needs to be under the footing, also joist, beam, post, and framing layout as this spreads weight evenly over the footings.
@sjrowan5 жыл бұрын
Aaron Sivertson thanks for the info!
@amsivertson5 жыл бұрын
Stejay no prob! Just for example here locally you can do a deck on surface footings with a maximum height of 4’ above the normal grade as long as it’s freestanding (not attached to the house), and they have a recommended way of placing and laying the footings, on gravel, plus all the recommendations on framing the deck. In fact, here we can even do a pergola on surface footings (a correct pergola without a solid roof, i.e. it doesn’t have a solid roof that would hold snow.) Note there are also rules on how close to buildings, fences, and property lines.
@randalltomes5 жыл бұрын
This looks like harder ground, more clay content, like up north. If doing this in Florida or more sandy areas, go with some poured cement footers, or else it will for sure sink unevenly.

I was thinking, why didn't you put the deck outer length parallel to wall direction inside the concrete block sand then attack something outside for outer covering? Like bit extended on both ends for outer lining? Also in the middle length, rather than using brackets can both sides lengths been cut for square wood joint rather than brackets or is that too much hassle to do? I hope my question makes sense, I am new to these kind of things.
@NeoS-fq6ex5 жыл бұрын
@1:15 That does not look like a very good layout for your supports (referring to the concrete deck blocks) because they are all near the perimeter of the deck. There will be more deflections at the center of the deck, so it is more advantageous to utilize more support for the center girder beam as more loads are transferred to the structural members and connections there. With your design, you'll end up with a lot of shear stress and moments at the end of the joists connecting to the center girder. It can result in more deflections and creeking in the boards later on. You also didn't mention it, but you need to treat the ends of the cut lumber with a water repellent coat to protect the wood from moisture and rot.
@chrisbarrett46375 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if you have established that the original design cannot withstand the loads it will be exposed during use. This is after allowing for the language from a "strength of materials " engineering course. Any comments on the load bearing capabilities of the soil.
@paullywallee2 жыл бұрын
Great looking deck and super helpful instructions, but is it just me or is that a lot of concrete blocks? Do you really need that many? Am I wrong in thinking you could make a very sturdy deck using half as many? Planning on make a deck very similar to this myself and don't feeling like frivolously spending.

Where can I get the exact measurements of the perimeters of the rim joists & center beam?
@chrisansari4 жыл бұрын
Do you need the joist hangers on the rim joists or can you just nail/screw the inner joists in place like you do the outer joists at 10:03? The hangers don't seem to be providing any support since the joists are supported by the concrete blocks just a few inches away, and the rim joists are held up by the joists.
@MichaelWhite782 жыл бұрын
The blocks under each joist takes the place of the beam, and 2x6 can overhand 1'. If the blocks were placed under the rim joist, it would become a beam and the blocks under each joist could be eliminated, but then you'd be able to see the blocks along the edges.
