It’s dangerous to send constant current through your ground(it also isn’t sized to handle all the current). A floating neutral can lead to voltage spikes and fry the components of your truck. Spend the money and have an electrician figure it out. It’ll save you down the line

I am building a food trailer and can't seem to find an answer on grounding. I see trailers at events that are run by generator. But I don't see where the generator or food trailer is grounded anywhere. Are they? Do they need to be? Issue I am seeing is that I have a brand new generator that I started up yesterday. It is showing 80 volts at the generator but I see nothing when I plug it into the trailer. Trying to debug the issue and wonder if it is grounding related. Many thanks!

Quick way to help understand what the wire numbers actually mean - the first number refers to the gauge (thickness) of the wire and the second number refers to the number of conductors (separate, insulated strands of copper). The smaller the first number, the thicker the gauge, one of those inverse annoyances (:

Thanks for all the information, good sir. I have two rookie questions: 1. My unit will have a 30 amp fuse box (8 breakers electric system 110v/220 v 30A), so does this mean that the total equipment on the trailer shouldn’t go over 30 amps REGARDLESS of how much the generator can hold? 2. The unit comes with a 30 amp plug. For my generator, I wanted at least a 10 ft cable. The generator includes a 120V 30A locking outlet, but would a 125v 30 cable suffice?
@fbaltierrez
@fbaltierrez 3 жыл бұрын
Big factor there is the wire size if you overload the wire it can over heat and thats where the wire can melt over time. 10 gauge typically is 30 amps. 8 gauge is always better. That's what I installed in the new trailer

The generator is a Pulsar G12KBN that maxes out at 12,000 watts and has a 50amp/240v output available. Using the 240v/50 amp output, could I wire both rooftop units on a separate 120v circuit and the rest of the truck on the other 'side' of the 240v/50amp output? Would there be a better way? So what about a main breaker? How do you size the main breaker - do you size it by the service cable size?
@fbaltierrez
@fbaltierrez 3 жыл бұрын
There is no main breaker in this breaker box. Only 2-15 amp Breakers and the generator inlet plug in the front of the trailer. The wire gets sized by the size of the generator you are using

Hey Frank! Great video as always! Question for ya, kinda off topic but still electric related... Do you use an air conditioner in your builds? For your size trailer (according to square footage) could easily be cooled by a 5000-6000 BTU (750 watts tops) air conditioner. Now maybe with all kitchen equipment running heating up the place, that size AC might not be strong enough? I'm debating putting one in my build but I dont wanna waste my time/money if its not feasible.
@fbaltierrez
@fbaltierrez 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't put AC in my trailer and this new one does not have one either. Just use a fan and you should be good

@@fbaltierrezHello, just a piggy back off of this question. I am purchasing a gyro machine where the user manual states the following "The air switch for the power cord should be above 15A. I assume (sent a message to the company and waiting for a response) that requires more than 15AMPS so I was thinking of doing a dedicated breaker of 20AMPS with a homerun directly using a 12/3 wire. Can I use 14/2 or 14/3 for the rest of the equipment? Warmer is 12.5AMP, Prep Fridge, Main Fridge, Water Heater, and lights are under 1OAMPS. So approximate total amps used will be 42.5. Does that means that I would have to use a 50AMP plug and inlet box (4 prong) and would my SO cable need to be 8 gauge or 6? Also in the 100 or 125 AMP panel box, would I be required to use 240V or can I use everything on one side only? If so what size breakers should I use?
@fbaltierrez
@fbaltierrez 2 жыл бұрын
@@crharrell01 depends on your equipment. If only 120 is needed then just one leg is needed. I use 6 gauge wire for 50 amps

Not trying to step on your toes but careful with the wire size, you cannot use 14 gauge wire for a 20 amp circuit. 20A circuits must use 12 gauge or larger. Check out this wire gauge chart: www.mcgowanelectric.com/uploads/wire-size-chart.jpg
