The purpose of the soap is to break the surface tension of the vinegar. When the fly lands on the surface of the liquid, there is no surface tension for them to stand on and get sucked into the liquid. The same is true for mosquito larvae... a little soap, and they can no longer (hang on) to the surface and drown...

I just made this tonight. I made mine a little bit differently though. I put holes in the water bottle cap with a needle and a lighter and I made the holes big enough that a fly could fly in and not be able to fly back out. Hopefully this works because these fruit flies have been driving me crazy and I love buying bananas but I do not like the fly babies that come out of bananas. The fruit flies are driving me bananas lol. 😂 thank you for making this video❤

I've never had any luck with apple cider vinegar. I put some in a few containers, added a couple drops of dish detergent and left them out for days. I'd see bunches of fruit flies sitting on the rims, but only maybe one or two in the liquid. I had the best luck using banana pieces as bait. I made some traps from bottles with a small funnel hot-glued through a hole in the lid. This way I can clean and re-use them. They don't kill the flies, but once in, they can't find their way back out. After a few days, I had a bunch in each one. Then I filled them with water to drown the flies, dumped them in the toilet and re-baited them. Even a piece of nectarine doesn't seem to work as well. A squashed green grape caught quite a few though. When I have fresh fruit in the house, I do my best to keep it from attracting fruit flies. I wrap any scraps (bad spots, pits, etc) in plastic wrap before throwing them out and I double-bag banana peels.
@gmansworld71863 жыл бұрын

@@gmansworld7186 it killed about 10, the rest hung out on the edge. Gonna add some tomato for bait.

how do they not fly back out through the hole they came through, seems big enuff?
@gmansworld71868 жыл бұрын
When I made this video, I didn't put enough vinegar in the bottle. You should fill it just below the bottle opening rim leaving enough room for the soap to do its job by allowing the flies to slide back into the vinegar. Also, the plastic is clear so the flies have no perception of what they are flying into, thus they hit the vinegar and the more they move the more they drown in the solution. Thanks for the comment and watching the video!

The trick is the clear plastic! if you use a colored bottle the flies would see the light through the hole and fly back up; but if the plastic is clear they will try to fly out through the sides and the soap will do its job like Mentioned in the video.

Great vid the soap actually helps kill them. Most of the "green" pesticides you buy in stores main active ingredient are detergents.

cant they fly out the hole tho? ive set several of these (with the plastic wrap) and theyre just sitting at the top of the plastic...been set for 2 days and not a one caught
@gmansworld71868 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you are talking about with the plastic wrap. I used tape to connect the two parts of the bottle. Try adding more apple cider vinegar. They are attracted to the vinegar and my traps work within ten minutes. I'm not sure why yours is not working, sorry. I usually have a hundred or so by morning or should I say did. My fruit fly traps wiped out the whole population within a few days. The dish soap should stop them from flying out. Make sure you swirl the soap so the sides get soap on them so when the fruit flies try to get out they slide back into the vinegar. Good luck!

I’ve made like 3 different types of traps from different videos and NONE of them have worked!!! I’m getting tired of these fruit flys in my house. Any suggestions??
@gmansworld71863 жыл бұрын
You can look for the source where they are propagating from and remove it from the house.

Gman's World. I know who it is now. It’s those fruit flies who did not get invited to that bottle party above. Clearly a case of sour grapes or cider I should say! :) your video just helped me today. God save the FFs now.

Does anyone know if I can use regular vinegar? I don't have apple cider vinegar. Thx. 🙂
@gmansworld71864 жыл бұрын
I've never used regular vinegar. I use apple cider vinegar because they are fruit flies. Thanks for watching and commenting.

After catching the fruit flies, is it safe for it to be given to my pet insects for food?
@gmansworld71866 жыл бұрын
I doubt it because of the soap and most insects like to catch their own live prey. Thanks for watching and commenting!
