A little bit of beer or wine works great for this kind of trap. Fruit flies are attracted to the smell of fermentation. I know this for sure cuz i asked one today.

Perfect timing on this video. We’re going through fruit fly season up here in MN also, and I was considering one of the plug in traps to replace the apple cider vinegar traps. Now I think I’ll just stick with the old stand by!

Totally agree with the l'labarge .. I tested ACV vs red wine and the wine was clearly the winner. Lucky for me fruit flies don't taste bad with a nice Shiraz.

I wonder if there's any type of flies that ended up on the sticky pads that weren't attracted to the apple cider? I'm wondering about just using existing sticky traps and leaving some sort of led or desk lamp next to them.

I have to say, I've tried many different types to prevent fruit flies. The best above all have been the Apple Cider Vinegar and a couple drops of dish soap liquid. No more annoying fruit flies floating up to my face, and have you ever noticed when you try to clap your hands to destroy them? They mostly survive. It's like they know and get the hell away before your hands meet 😮
@johnsamuels60214 ай бұрын
@peterc5866 - That’s because as your hands come together, they push the air away, and the bugs with it. That’s why flyswatters are full slots or holes.

All the videos about fruit flies show Apple Cider Vinegar and dish soap...tried this a hundred times...it doesn't work for me. I do not know why. I catch more on those sticky traps but not with ACV and Dish soap.

I find that my acv+soap traps get all their catches in big batches. They'll get no catches for hours, and then I check it a while later and there's dozens. Also helps to clean the infested room by wiping down every surface and throwing out all trash. They can feed on the smallest residues and sticky fingerprints, so removing any other food source makes them much more likely to choose the trap.

I don't think it's fair to test the traps side by side and compare their catches. It shows the flies prefer the vinegar over the light, but that doesn't mean the light trap is less effective. Would the light trap had caught more flies if the vinegar trap wasn't pulling them away? What if the light has a greater range and was responsible for attracting the most flies, but the flies were drawn to the vinegar in the last moment, only after being attracted by the light? I'd like to see how the traps perform separately. That said, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. It's invaluable. I have just declared war on the fruit flies in my house, and KZbinrs like you have been a great help.

This is so annoying that i tried my best making and waiting for the flies to get trapped by those vinegar simple traps. I made it in a bottle, in a cup, in a bowl. Tried adding fruits, vinegar, etc etc. Its so funny my home is full of flies and they dance around those traps but never go inside. ! Why

Questions ...........So this clearly works but are they so attracted that now you're bringing in more from outside ???
@Tatertot014 ай бұрын
Why cover the cup with plastic wrap if you're using dish soap in the vinegar? The dish soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar so the fruit flies will drown once they land on it. The plastic wrap seems unnecessary and makes it harder for the flies to smell the vinegar. A good test would be to have 2 cups. One with vinegar but no dish soap and plastic wrap covering the cup. The other with vinegar and dish soap but no plastic wrap. Put them side by side and see which one catches more flies.
@mrdhksan4 ай бұрын
The fruit flies don’t simply dive into the liquid. They are attracted to the smell gradually. They may approach then recede and fly away, then come back later and approach again then recede, etc. So, if they approach and go through a hole in the plastic wrap, they can’t recede. So, likely they get captured faster than if there no plastic wrap (however, I have not done a side-by-side comparison).

I use the apple cider vinegar method but have never needed the dish soap. It's just not necessary.
@CeeBee7814 ай бұрын
I tried both this year, one with soap and one without. I have way more dead flies in the one with soap. I think it’s because they can walk on water and survive long enough to find a way out of the little holes, but if they even touch the liquid with dish soap in it, they’re done, and they drown very quickly. Just my theory
@jasonwong95457 ай бұрын
I used an apple cider vinegar trap before and it didn't do squat. The fruit flies are NOT attracted to apple cider vinegar. You're better off just putting a fragment of fruit in than using apple cider vinegar.

Maybe it depends on the type of fruit fly or whether all the flies we see we think are fruit flies are actually fruit flies or not. But when I think of fruit flies I think I'm thinking of the most common small one that has red eyes or a red head that can't be more than about a couple millimeters long that flies fast in some sort of evasive maneuver that makes them hard to swat. I'm going to have to research this now. I'm sure etymologist have this all figured out by now since flies are such a scourge upon the produce industry. I would not be surprised if there are actually many different species aka varieties of fruit flies from around the world, with some being brought in on different types of produce, of different shapes and sizes and more attracted to certain things more than others. But yes, in terms of apple cider vinegar, surely you need not use the expensive organic stuff which I use often enough for health that unless I got a gallon of it probably wouldn't last me a whole year. Though I'm sure the flies would probably like the raw organic kind better and if it does work better, it might be worth of course using it though cheaper would be better since it will just be getting dumped out. I was also under the false impression that the vinegar needed to be diluted with water but it seems that was a wrong assumption. I also mixed old bad wine with my apple cider vinegar dregs and water in a plastic film covered bottle and so I'm not sure if that works better or worse. Does anyone know? Anyways whatever larger nasty flies I found in a package of rotten tomatoes are not going for it. They're like the fatter much faster round black looking flies that are bigger than the tiny red-eyed common fruit fly. I'm not even sure that they're fruit flies honestly. They could be drain flies but they went for my tomatoes. I guess I need to kill one with some cleaner and dry it out and take a picture of it with Google lens. That could help figure out what the difference is between these different type of flies. I've seen this other larger type of narrow bodied black fruit loving fly that I assume is a type of fruit fly that definitely I've seen in produce sections. Thosr have longer dark colored wings and are a fatter fly which flies much slower lazily, and hovers. They don't look like a common housefly or picnic raiding black fly. So I'm not sure if these other "fruit flies" are technically or not fruit flies or not but they sure love to hover around fruit in grocery stores so I assume they are all just different types of fruit flies. Luckily I have a couple rolls of fly paper in an old drawer I'm going to need to pull out and probably will need to add some extra vinegar to my makeshift fruit fly trap and maybe an apple for or other piece of juice. Maybe some fruit juice. I guess this could end up being an extended trial and error process!
