I wished I had watched this last week. I replaced bracing on a gate someone else made and just repeated it. They toe-nailed. but I wanted to do a lap joint. And, of course, I did it backward from what you said. As soon as I saw what you were suggesting, I could see that it's a better way. Fortunately, it's just an entry gate and it's working well enough. Thanks for sharing!

Hello Paul and thanks for this. I built double gates last year (I thought I posted on here, but I don't see the post). The gates are 7'-6" each for a 15 foot opening. I built according to your plan using 2x4 for the frame, 4x4 steel gate-posts, and welded the hinges to the posts. The 2x4's were store-bought so they were dry. The 6' pickets I got from a local saw mill. They are a very small operation here in rural Utah and they had just brought the logs off the mountain. Thay were wet as can be and cut 4/4 or 1 full inch thick. They weighed a ton, but I was in a hurry and hung them anyway with a 1/8" gap. All that wet wood hanging on my new gate. Today, a year later the gates hang perfect. Only problem is: you know those 1/8" gaps? Well, today I can stick my finger through! Next time let the wood dry a little first. Great video. Thanks.

Thanks Paul, I just finished a 12' span of two 6' gates using your method. Like Freedoms, I used (dried) pressure treated pine and sunk 4" posts deep, tieing them to nearby posts. Only used 2 large strap hinges per gate. Works beautifully. Glue tip for PT lumber in wet conditions: polyurethane glue - Loctite PL Premium construction adhesive!

Absolutely correct about pressure treated lumber for a gate. Too heavy, wood will shrink and expand eventually breaking the glue joints. Pressure treated 2X4s are notoriously prone to warping.

Why is no one else using the 1x4s on the lap joints? Glad I watched this video. Makes it lighter as well. Seems so chuncky using all the 2x4s especially with additional z brace. Two of those 1x4s compensates for the extra weight of brace. I like it.

Paul, Everything you've said is so true. I built a gate following your instructions. Unfortunately all I had to work with was pressure treated. Against my better judgement I built the frame knowing full well the wood would shrink and pull the glued joints apart. Which is what happened. Also the weight of the gate either caused the post to warp or moved the entire post and concrete to an angle. Needless to say the gate sagged. 4x4 posts were already there so I couldn't use 6x6 without digging them out. There's not much I can do about the gate except scrapping it and starting over. The end post alone will not support the weight. Fortunately for me, I was able to rehang the gate to the opposite side of the fence opening. This post was connected to other posts that make up the fence. Hopefully the combined strength of the other posts and the connecting lumber will be strong enough to hold the gate. So far it appears to be working. An interesting learning experience though.

Nice gate. This will help me as I have two sagging gates. I like what my neighbors did. They put a caster wheel under the side opposite the hinge. This prevents sagging and allows the gate to swing, but requires a smooth flat surface.

A lot of people poo-poo on the idea of pocket screws, but I made a 4 foot wide gate with 2x4 cedar and z-braces and used nothing but those .long blue coated screws and it's still going strong without sagging after a decade. I actually installed an antisag cable when I built it but as the 2x4s dried they shrunk and there was slack in the cable so I just removed it. I don't remember where you said you were from..I wanna say Louisiana but that sounds wrong. I'm in Texas, NE of Dallas, and our soil is shrink/swell black clay. I used 10 foot poles and sunk them 3 and a half feet in the ground with 120 pounds of concrete in each hole and gravel at the bottom. Once the fence was done I just ran a piece of mason line and sawzall'd them even. It's probably overkill but I've got the only fence in the neighborhood that's not leaning.

Hi Paul - I watched this video about 2 months ago. Please bear with me in this long comment, but I really need to give you the background and think you would find it interesting. I really needed to get some fence mending done, replace bowed & split runners, and replace my 12’ double gate. This makes 3rd gate (maybe even 4) I had to make in the 10 years I owned this home, I bought this corner lot house new and had a wood privacy fence added as part of the builders contract. The guys that did the work, used the cheapest materials they could find, didn’t bother with water sealing and apparently didn’t own a level. They used 16’ 2x4s on the three horizontal runners. This fence surrounded my back yard, as no other homes were built behind me, and I was on a large corner lot. The 16’ runners made quick work of the framing, but as they dried and bowed out of shape (in 8’ sections at different places along the fence) I had to cut the 16’ runners in half at the fence posts and replace these sections as they bent out of shape over the past 10 years. Ironically the same fence guys came by about 2 weeks after I moved in and said they would rebuild the fence using cedar, for about $3800, no thank you. Within 3 months the original 16’ double gate started sagging, (they built the fence, left a 16’ span without a fence post, added hinges, a cross brace on each side and then cut that section in half, with a chainsaw, added latch hardware and called it good). I had to take it down and rebuild it. I used their original design with the support brace at the top near the hinge, running to the bottom of the opening, and the cross braces were nailed on top of the three runners, no frame, just three horizontal runners and cross braces. I added side frames and the gate and it lasted longer, but only about a year, until both sides started sagging again. I kept repairing the gate, until I had replace it again. This time I framed it and ran the cross brace flush with the inside of the frame, in the proper geometry of support, and notched the cross braces into the frame corners. I also added 45 degree corner wood braces. This gate lasted longer then the first ones until it got to the point of no return (sagging badly, bent hinges, bowed runners on the fencing to the right and left of the gate and one side of the gate about blew off completely during the 80 MPH high winds and rain storms we had). Like I said, I watched your video and built the frame using cedar 2x4 with glued and screwed lap joints as well as pocket hole screws for the cross braces during the rainstorms. Today, was a beautiful day so I finished the gate and mended the fence. I replaced the bowed runners, bought new hinges, cedar pickets and got to work. I followed your video to the letter. Now I have a beautiful new double gate, that is level and square as are the fence runners that needed to be replaced. Each side of the gate is very light, swings open beautifully and latches closed solidly. Thanks for this video, old dogs can learn new tricks. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this and your other videos and enjoyed building this new gate. When it is dry enough, I’m going to shoot it with water seal. My wife liked the cedar pickets, so I’ll be replacing all the pickets with cedar. Thanks again!

Interesting video and a good start for DIY'ers. A couple of quick comments though. Your cross or 'z' brace doesn't want to go to the top corner by the looks of it - to maintain stability it is best to keep the angle of this brace at 45 degrees or more from the hanging side. Certainly on your previous example from a couple of years ago your brace looked too flat. Also, I was always taught that using a small square to make sure that something like a field gate, large door, etc. was actually square was not good enough - especially when using sawn timber. So instead you should check everything using the 3:4:5 method - no tools required just a tape measure and maybe a straight piece of wood or board that is about 6 feet long. Or if you make a lot of these things then make yourself up a large square using the same method.

I followed your other video and I built a double gate for a 12' span. I did use treated wood and 4x4 post and I installed the gates in a little different way. But I used wire rope to make it strong. The gates won't sag and the post is staying straight. Thanks
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 5 жыл бұрын
That's good to know FREEDOM, thank you for the information. You must have dried the wood out well before building your gate. Treated wood is usually very heavy until it dries out and many people make the mistake of building the gates while the wood is still wet. This usually causes the gates to warp or sag. I really appreciate your information and I thank you for sharing it with me. Have a good day! Paul

I need you to come put my fence in. I have chain link and I have a huge yard almost an acre. I would love to have more privacy in my back yard I get people stopping asking if I want to sell this or that all the time.

So one side is a 4x4. Is the other side a 4x4 or 6x6......also when you make the lap joints when you cut one side of the board , do you flip the board over before cutting the board again ...or cut on the same side for the lap
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, they are both 4x4's I would recomment 6x6 but these were already in place. When I did the lap joints, I knotched 2 different boards so they would bond together. Sorry for the confusion!

Install wheels to support gates
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 5 жыл бұрын
I don't need wheels with this gate, it's several years old and still perfect. With wheels you are also limited to driveways and level ground, they won't work on uneven ground or grass. Wheels definitely have their purpose, just not in this case. Thanks!

I thought you werent supposed to tie a fence to a structure because of soil expansion and contraction causing the bigger structure to move a lot more up and down than the smaller fence posts that are buried out in the yard... figured that explanation sounded right when i heard it so i opted not to attach mine to the house.. i dunno whether fences attached to houses have more issues down the line than ones not attached but i do tend to see a lot of fences that arent attached sag away from the house.. wonder if the fences that are attached, instead of sagging if they just snap from sheer forces over time..? I dunno, even simple tasks seem to snowball the more you look into them but if you dont do your research then they usually wind up in a pile by the curb and you pissed off watching a game with a bandage around your hand..

On your cross brace Just curious as to why you didn't go all the way across. I noticed you went about 75% across. Any reasoning for that. Just built a gate myself and went all the way across. I believe you called it a Z brace. Thanks

jwrightky At 2:42 of the video it states he only had an 8’ 2x4 for his Z brace which is why it didn’t go to the top corner, and as long as it’s close it’ll work.
