@@johnnybayles7412 You should tell folks that you own the trillium dome website. Fwiw, your "more practical designs" cant use 2x4`s or 2x6`s. Your triangles can twist as they are only held together by 3 wood screws that go into the end grain. A dome that uses steel plates, 3/8" bolts and structural grade 2x4`s will not only be be many times stronger, it`ll be easier and quicker to fabricate.

@AmericaShrugged Жыл бұрын
Just thumb nailing here, but these look too spendy for framing ties... I'd be really tempted to buy some Simpson strap ties and weld them together. Strap ties- about $1.00 each. Those star connectors were $100.00+ when I googled. Unless there's a special metal type, or special thickness, I'm missing the value here. What do you think?
@johnnybayles7412 Жыл бұрын
You could build with no hubs at all. Much more beautiful, practical and cheaper. Check out Trillium Domes
@nunyabusiness5075 Жыл бұрын
@@AmericaShrugged $125.64 for 11 connectors, or about $11.42 each. If you weld your own you'll likely need to coat them to prevent rust since you'll cook off the galvanized coating. And you're going to need 3 straps for each and the 20 gauge ones for a buck aren't going to compare against a single 16 gauge stamped piece. Not to mention your time and effort. So......buying is most likely a better option from a value perspective, even if you own a welder.
@AmericaShrugged Жыл бұрын
@@nunyabusiness5075 Excellent points, and thanks for diving deeper than I did! Maybe I nitpick a little about a can of spray sealer for anti- rust, but you're right on the money. Either way, it is much more fun imo to wrestle it all around and make it into a project, cuz I'm kind of a fool like that, lol!! Cheers!

Buckminster Fuller, by Alec Nevala-Lee, Inventor of the Future: The Visionary Life of Buckminster Fuller.) Coincidentally, the comedian, Emma Willmann, said she grew up in one that her dad built during an interview. Did you know about the, " Trillium Domes" channel? There are also many people experimenting with bamboo frame designs, straw bale and cob walls, etc. Not sure what might be ideal, but really dug a line from a newer Futurama episode: "I'm afraid your friend is about to be fully Buckminstered!" ( -As a geodesic dome is rolling towards them.) : )

This looked like fun! I've watched a bunch of your shorts but this puts me over the top, you've got a new sub 😁. I'm planning on building a sustainable home in the wilderness. I've considered a standard cabin, a geodesic dome and a yurt for my living structure. So far I've eliminated the standard cabin, I mean who wants to be 'normal' just to conform to normality, am I right? Besides, a standard cabin is labor and material intensive and will be expensive. Essentially working against nature to build a square box just seems stupid to me. Both the dome and the yurt will require a platform. My platform will be 4' above ground level and 2' below. I'm going to enclose and insulate it for storage that is accessible from within the structure through a trap door and stairs. The dome and yurt are strong structures though the dome is geometrically stronger. I'm on the fence about which to build for my living space but leaning toward the yurt do to the cost and labor. Whatcha think?
