DO NOT HOUSE YOUR GERBILS LIKE THIS! DO NOT USE SOIL OR SAND WHATSOEVER! The moist and dirt will get them sick, and if the burrows collapse it will be so heavy they can get trapped and killed by the weight. Keep them in a large glass tank like this (no smaller than 3ft by 1,5ft, or 90x40cm), and just fill the entire thing with wood shavings/saw dust suited for rodents (make sure it's dedusted/dust-free!), mixed with hay, an not a small layer, but like a big thick layer of 20-30cm (around 10 inch). The mix with hay will strenghten the burrows they dig. Add a few more plucks of hay for fun. Also never put any plastic in their housings. Just use natural wooden toys and shelters. Cardboard/toiletpaper rolls are fine too, but those will be chewed up in a day. Still fun for them though. Add a (closed wooden/metal!) wheel for them to run in (around 10inch/25cm in diameter, no smaller), and a loose bowl of chinchilla sand for them to roll around in to clean their fur, and you're done. Chinchilla sand as a bedding is not what your gerbils want. Too much of that fine sand can agitate their skin at a certain point in time, and they can't dig burrows in it. Just offer them a loose bowl to wash themselves in once in a while. Seriously, a thick layer of dustfree wood shavings mixed with hay is the best and safest bedding for your gerbils, most fun for them too. Please do not house them otherwise.

No, gerbils are desert animals. They have a lot more needs to feel safe and at home in the wild. To understand the type of animals they are, their needs are the same as meerkats. They eat seeds and vegetables, and treats are sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and strawberries. The minimum cage size is 10 W x 20 L because they need lots of space. However they do need a wheel and a hidey home, their toys must be very different. Gerbils are like small desert bevears. They are huge gnawers. Their favorite toys are things to gnaw on like wood. However a toy for them is toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls (minus the paper) they enjoy chews, and anything you can get their hands on. They also can like climbing, though most really enjoying bendy bridges.

mine already had babies and u should not use dirt as bedding it kills them early. if u really must have them dig nest underground all if do is put stuffing. u can buy stuffing at ac more or get it out of nice pillows or a stuff animal. but yes my gerbils love the stuffing they dig houses and put stuffing in a mixing with bedding and make a whole huge underground house. and I no I am right because my gerbil is almost at his 5th year of living and there only suppose to live two. he is still health

Gerbils shouldn't have soil. Firstly their desert animal and second it's harder to clean out, also their tunnel will collapse more easily and they won't be able to get out. But if you use wood shavings it's light so they can get out more easily.

I put the food in a bowl because my geribl likes to dig and she would cover it up usually so I decided to use the bowl. Is that okay? I also have the regular cages I don't have the tank. Katelyn James If you want a nice and tidy looking cage do not get Gerbils. Just get a cage and that's it. Gerbils need at least 30 cm of bedding/soil to dig around. A sand bath should always be provided and the tank should be a minimum of 42 gallons (100x40x40 cm) most cages you can buy in petstores are not suitable for any pets (hamsters, mice etc.) I reccomend you mesure your cage and get a bigger one if needed :)

First, NEVER USE DIRT, It get dirty very quickly and it will cause health problem to your gerbil, You can use it as a playground, but not as his home, and when you place a gerbil in a cage with dirt, you need to watch them if you dont want to found a dead gerbil buried. Those are gerbils. There are two domestic species of gerbils in the pet trade. The ones in the video are Mongolian gerbils and the other species is fat tailed gerbils. Mongolian gerbils are the most common gerbil species in the pet trade. If there are other domestic species in the pet trade I am not aware f them and if your gerbils do not look like these ones, they are most likely fat tailed gerbils. Which are much smaller with shorter tails.

Gerbils are desert animals. Why would you use organic soil in their habitat? And who can afford to put that much ORGANIC soil in a huge tank that needs to be cleaned out bi-weekly if not once a week? Plus, soil that you buy is normally very wet and soggy, which means you have filthy gerbils and a pain of a tank to clean out every week. Use aspen, which is completely gerbil safe and much more cost effective.

It's awful for their coats, it can't support burrows, and if they do dig it can collapse and they can suffocate and be crushed. Use carefresh or kaytee clean and cozy for bedding.
