It took me 5 months to build my above ground KIO POND WITH WINDOW. This video will describe what materials I used, How its was built, what mistakes I made, and what I would have done different if I had the chance to do it again. KOI POND build, KOI FILTER SYSTEM fitting, pipe works, materials and how it all came together in a short space of time.
My Pond is 11ft long x 5ft wide x 4.5ft deep. 6,904 Ltrs.
A quick costs breakdown is: main pond build materials with labour = £1,200. Fibre glassing =£480. £1,500 filter system +pipes valves etc. window= £150. Then others bits like window frame, silicon for window, glues, insulation etc etc etc. Total costs = £3,670.10p. Only labour costs were pond builder and Fiber glasser. The rest I did myself or with friends...I could have saved some money on the filter system as I bought new instead of getting second hand.
Fibre glassing done by Sean Malkin from Tern Hill, Near Market Drayton.
My suppliers details are: Peng Koi based in Stoke on Trent. The contact details are through his Facebook account: / peng-koi-1429164630650751
Peng koi, 30 Barker St, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent ST3 1PE....

Koi Pond lifestyle. Back then it was a slow process as we didn’t have handy supplies of filter bacteria. Unfortunately, people seem to think this is the answer, but it’s only an aid to speed up filter maturation. It’s not instant.

Really interesting video again 👍 one thing I was always told is that most garden ponds aren't deep enough to have any meaningful difference in temperature and that rather than fish congregating at the bottom due to warmer water, it's more due to their inactivity? Could be wrong though ;)

Good information 👍cheers Use a mini digger. 900mm thinnest you'll get. Volumetric concrete use. Can be cheaper. Breeze blocks, don't exist anymore! Three times what you dig out is your waste. Use a soakaway if on a meter to save on your water bills. Waste and water discounts. Fire service may do for a fee! Q- why not use acrylic? 3-5 times Stronger than glass and can be cheaper ! Synthaproof the outside block work of your pond when built. (Waterproofing) Watch KZbin people for advice! Keep em coming. Many cool and interesting vlogs 😊

next time to start the new tank or pond, use the dirty filter media from the old filters and put it into the new one, much quicker jump starts the maturing of the filters with bacterias and all those things needed.

My friend you mentioned about your bottom drain sucking out the warm water and blowing back out . Well a good solution to that is a cut off valve stop the bottom drain during the winter and just filter the w@ter through the top skimmers or Duce skimmers because your not feeding as much in the winter or probably hardly any so therefore you water conditioning is not very hard and your fish will stay warmer with great water quality 😀

A shovel is for lifting dug soil..spades are for digging. Garden spades are fine for already cultivated garden soils,, but lack focused power per square inch for compacted, clay, chalky or stony sub soils . The best tools for difficult digging, that's most digging, are spades with a long, narrow postal spade also known as a rabbiting spade... They concentrate the force far more than a garden spade. Where soils get very tough use a crowbar.. For lifting out soil try using a shovholer. Into rubble sacks held open with a bucket with a hole in. And or the long handled shown in this video. Both these tools are for lifting dug soil. If digging is hurting.. You're doing it wrong or using the wrong tools.. Avoid straining and pushing.. Use the dropping weight of a crowbar, don't be gripping tightly on impact, use the fleshy part of your thumb as a cushion Instead of your bones. Take a minute break every 20 mins to stretch .. and un tension muscles... It shouldn't hurt, stop if it does, don't work through the pain, it's likely to get worse. Digging is fun. If you come across a huge obstacle like a stone or tree root, resist a direct grunting arrack keep working methodically and most objects pop out when ready.... I want a big window in a wildlife pond using a rubber liner except for the wall with the window, I'd like the window to be in a cosy room.

Great video!!!!!! very helpful. I am also planning to build same size pond, however, I am planning to install DIY filters. 55gallon container with filter sponges and 2 containers with 30gallon K media or Bio balls and UV light. Do you think that it is good idea to use DIY filters. Are they good? Also, I am from California so temp goes all the way up to 108F. Do you think that Koi fish can survive?
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle 2 жыл бұрын
Hiya, Glad you enjoyed the video. I've seen lots of DIY filters in the past that have been just as successful as ready bought filters, so yes they are good if set up right. If you build something to shade the pond (maybe a pergola or similar) that would not only allow you to control the temps but reduce the algae growth that can be difficult to control even with the UV for better water clarity. At the same time the Koi do need natural light to enhance their colors but can also get sunburned if left out in direct sunlight. Hope this info helps. If you've subscribed you find plenty of other videos to help you along the way in your pond keeping journey. Good luck with the build and don't forget every day is a school day... 😉👍

Great video's all really informative. I'm after a bit of advice. My pond water ( 6 weeks up and running) is crystal clear , ph perfect , ammonia perfect, nitrate and nitrite perfect , happy fish . What i have is a build up of algae on the pond liner, it's not blanket weed or long strands it's just on the liner ,i can rub it off with my finger . Is there any product i can use to remove it ? I don't want to scrub the liner as i don't want to damage it. I'm running a pump and pressurised filter incorporating a uv light. Any tips or ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks, Mark 👍🏻
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle 3 жыл бұрын
Hiya. Keep testing your water if it's a new pond as it should start to show Ammonia any day soon. I wouldn't bother trying to clean the algae off. You can clean it off with a soft brush, but it would be like painting the forth bridge and will keep clouding your pond. I had a pressurised filter on my last pond. I had to get another UV installed as the one in the filter wasn't big enough. Good luck with your new pond...

At the moment all the water is pulled from the bottom of the pond so all the water remains at the same temp. @KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, A quick breakdown is: main pond build materials with labour = £1,200. Fibre glassing =£480. £1,500 filter system +pipes valves etc. window= £150. Then others bits like window frame, silicon for window, glues, insulation etc etc etc. Total costs = £3,670.10p. Only labour costs were pond build and Fiber glasser. The rest I did myself or with friends...I could have saved some money on the filter system as I bought new instead of getting second hand. Thanks for watching...👍😉😉👍

I have had fish jump out in the past. I'm told they usually jump for a reason. Usually bad water quality or parasites they are trying to get away from. However, the last one I lost last year to jumping had no parasites and the water checks were all good?? Some people put jump guards around the pond.. 🤔🤔

Did you insulate the sides of your pond ? if so, what did you use, how thick was it, and what did you use to stick it to the blocks ?
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. I used some 20mm insulation sheets I bought on line as they were cheaper than the house insulation I'd seen others using. Cant remember where I got it from? Because 75% of my pond is underground it's pretty much insulated. I'm considering wrapping the bit above the ground this winter with something?? Thanks for watching...

Forgot to say I used some cheap sealant to stick the sheets on as they were going under the fiberglass anyway.

Re the outward water pressure. It has nothing to do with the water volume/overall weight. The outward pressure is direct and linear proportion to water depth. The lower level sheer will not move bottom blocks, but a thin wall particularly the sides of the window area will experience a 'topple' force, so should be either double block top to bottom or vertical reinforcement right down into the bottom slab on the inside.
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. No issues for the last 3 years with single vertical block and no reinforcement..😉👍

Hiya, I've placed all the costings in the description below the video to give you an idea of what costs what when I built mine. The big saving for me was labour costs. The more you can do yourself the more you'll save with the build. I believe costs of materials has gone up since my build but I wouldn't cut to many corners with cheap materials as the pond should be built to last. Good luck with your build..

No accounting for personal taste but your pond has very stark surroundings, a fence concrete and no planting to soften the look. Can't you have oxygenating plants and marginal plants to create a more natural ecosystem? Isn't that healthier for the fish? Perhaps you would need more space for natural ponds and plants?
@KoiPondLifestyle

Hiya, like to be different on Koi Pond Lifestyle.. I did consider plants but that would have needed more hanging over the edge or building in shelves when the fish only eat the roots anyway.. 😉👍

@@KoiPondLifestyle my dream is to have a cosy subterranean room with a big viewing window 1metre x 3metres and plenty of underwater lightning, The wildlife is most active at night in general and more visible than in daylight. I think there's a way of using a butyl rubber liner and sandwiching it into a block wall where the window is and elsewhere using geotextile above and below the liner and shaping terraces for rocks gravel, and some poor subsoil for planting. I'd keep it for our native wildlife, frogs, toads, newts, possibly reptiles, the slow worm, grass snakes and all our wonderful invertebrates, dragonflies, great diving beetles etc I've got sticklebacks in a pond and I hear there's a bigger fish that is a bottom feeder you'd never notice without a window, tench? Can't remember. How cool to have a kingfisher bank and watch them dive underwater from the subterranean viewing hide. Perhaps the glass could be curved? Getting the liner to meet the glass with a perfect, long lasting seal would be a challenge but surely possible?.. After watching the way you succeeded making the joint good definitely inspires me.. Two different visions but with some shared techniques. I'd be overjoyed to be considered as having created a suitable habitat for introducing our endangered great crested newt.. I know only licensed persons are allowed to even touch them but I think they need new sites. Anyway best wishes and let me know if you have any sources of information on making windows in rubber liners.. Cheers
