How do you keep the bark from falling off as it dries out?
@Backyardprojectguy Жыл бұрын
Good question..It takes two to three years for the bark to fall off, then you still have a bare wood nesting box.. If you look in the background of the opening shot you can see one on the tree without bark..It been there for five years now...Also notice the woodpeckers and the squirrel have made the opening hole bigger..I now have larger birds nesting in it

Yes I should have said something...I used two good size lag bolts..One I took the roof off and two I went through the enterance hole..I needed an extension on the drill and the ratchet to lag it in the hole..Yes the Bird house was heavy....I screwed and 2X4 to the tree placed the bird house on it, and put the two lag bolts on..Then I took the 2X4 off...I hope this helps amd I hope it gives you some ideas...Good luck with your project..

Nice! Might have to do one one of these days. That would make a good safe home for a lil' birdie. Not to take away from the way you did it, but I would put a little piece of dowel rod inside by the hole before I screwed it together and a piece outside the hole, just to help them get in and out a little easier. The other thing I would do is put the hole on the opposite side so the rain wouldn't drip down over the hole from the top being sloped towards it. All in all tho, nice project! Thank you!

What size whole for parrots, can I keep squirrels from nesting and pests? I like corvids and parrots, our quaker parrots and similar are always seen near electric stations (oddly as assume sense electromagnetism) and build nests, but attractive, little too noisy, if too many. Seem safe! Corvids use boxes sometimes, fascinating birds, wonder if could put a camera somehow, don’t know type! Great video, seems unlikely enough holes with forests gone.
@Backyardprojectguy5 жыл бұрын
Great question..But parrots can range from size of 3 inches to 40 inches..So I'm not sure what kind of parrot you want too attract. The Corvids also vary in size from Blue jays to crows..The covids are mostly open nest birds, not sure if they would choose you bird house....keep squirrels out is a major problem..I had many take up in my owl houses...Keep trying, mother nature will always impress you..Sometime with the biggest surprises..I'm always looking for different ideas..Hope this help..a little
@aryanprivilege96515 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It never occurred to me to attract owls! 🦉 especially would help with protecting my fruit on the trees! Those rodents and thieving awful things wouldn’t hear the silent killers coming! Plus owls belong here, Norway rats do not, though it could be opossums or raccoons too. I was so disappointed to lose first crop of Valencia mangos, they steal everything. I could make different sized ones and hang them on to oak tree, or on house maybe. Just strap to tree! Don’t imagine they want it spinning hanging loosely. Can use the saw dust from hardwood to grow oyster and other expensive mushrooms. I’d be happy with any parrots, even if invasive, my nephew would love to see them grow if could put a camera in a nesting box! Wonder if any here, thanks again! Use non toxic baits, clogs GI and gives rats gas, they aren’t working, even drowning trap. Clever demons! Almost never see an owl, in wild.
@aryanprivilege96515 жыл бұрын
Huge help, forgotten about owls! Would see pellets of fur and bones in north all over forest, but never the owls. We have little burrowing owls here too native, I want a ravenous flock of them!

Nice job! I built one, but am curious...where did you put the house for the birds? Mine has a bit of weight, so I can't just put it on a pole. Did you use a wood post to mount it up high enough for the birds?
@Backyardprojectguy6 жыл бұрын
Excellent question...I used a ladder to put up high in a tree, I used 6 inch lag bolts..If you look at the beginning of the Video, look over my right shoulder and you will see one in the background, hanging on the tree, I made that one last year.

Well I'm not a birder but my wife certainly is, and I think I am gonna make one or two of these. PSST..Off topic but I need help. How can I lessen sparrows and swallows and starlings swamping the sites, throwing all the food down and kicking other birds away? Ideas?
@Backyardprojectguy6 жыл бұрын
UGH!!! you ask the MILLION Dollar question..I feel your pain about the sparrows & Starlings taken over the feeders...I have ask several Very Intense Birders that question...They told me to try and find the sparrow nest and then take it down before they can hatch the babies..Sparrows and Starlings are not Natural to this country and just over run the natural population..

@Backyardprojectguy5 жыл бұрын
Great question..because I have seem two different case..I have seen them in a very shallow bird house and I have seem them in one of my Bluebird house, which is 9 inches deep..Babies had no problems, Both had successful family. And the Wren came back the next year in the Bluebird house....Now that I think about it...In the Bluebird house the wren did build up the nest several inches..Hope this helps..
@jeffreylynnpease5 жыл бұрын
@@Backyardprojectguy I'm gonna use your idea. I had the misfortune of watching the afyer affects of the destruction done to 2 families of wrens this year by feral cats. Poor little babies. Must be the estrogen pills I have to take with radiation for prostate cancer , but, I almost couldn't get over watching them get killed. I did everything I could to get rid of the cats, but I couldn't watch 24 a day. I've never been so emotional over anything like this and your version of the log tree house seems to be the safest home I can build to get ready for next years babies Getting old I guess. Can't wait to get off these pills lol. Hot flashes. Emotions. Now when I hear women talking about these things, i definitely have sympathy for them. Lol Thanks
@Backyardprojectguy5 жыл бұрын
OMG!!!..I hope things work out well for you....I understand your misfortune, I also saw the aggressive sparrow go into a wren nest and throw the babies to the ground...I pick then up and put them back into the nest, only to find them back on the ground the next morning...I would like to get rid of the sparrow..They are an invasive species not natural to our country...
