The Rohtak Domes/ Madras Roof team led by Naranyaji is a talented crew that can built vaults, domes and jack arches without any steel or shuttering. The domes are made only with brick and cement, and stay in place because of the angle they are placed at. The roof is quite magical and miraculous in its structure and design.

You are right. Lime mortar making is bit lengthy process. Earlier they used to have bullock moving as a merry go round and with a grinder moving along it used to crush lime and make homogeneous mixture alongwith mixing other elements sometimes jaggery.

Great to see, finally! Although this is a modified version of Madras Roofing, it still looks wonderful 👌 Thanks for experimenting with these traditional architectural concepts and reintroducing them to the world. I said modified because.. One, of course, cement instead of lime. Secondly, there usually goes lime mortar on top of that and another layer of bricks, followed by mortar. As already pointed out by somebody else in the comments, I'm a bit concerned about water seepage unless water proofing is done below those tiles. Cement, unlike lime, is notorious for water leakages.

Thanks. Size of the room will depend on the length and width of the wooden rafters that you find. You could also support the wooden beams with another metal pipe or girder if your room is very big.

Concerned about the brick tiles, which are in between the two wooden rafters and in floating mode. Can this mechanism be more secured by wire mesh connecting each other, eliminating the possibility of falling down..... Just a query...

The tiles are all tilting a little, and therefore leaning on the row before each line. That is how they remain floating and don't fall

I have never seen or heard a brick falling from such a roof. The bricks are pretty light, and once the mortar sets in, they are firmly in place. Your suggestion is also a good idea, may be someone would try.

@@r.sgopalan6404 Actually, l am from West Bengal, here the dimension of the bricks are 10" × 5" × 3", which makes it very heavy. Therefore, only bricks which are specially made for this kind of roofing will be definitely lighter and the same will have to be customized, if anybody intends to adopt this technology.

You can make either. You will need to put a waterproofing layer on top of the brick work and then finjsb it with bricktiles or pavit tiles. Your architect will be able to guide you more

Just to point out a few things. Since it is Madras type roof. And it is being made since ancient times. At that time cement was not available. So how did the roof survive? It may take a longer time if you use lime. How much time? If you are going to introduce cement then what is the purpose? even water proofing, in the good old days, how the water proofing was done? Mam, I am all your videos. I don't think that cement should be involved at all.

I have been following the progress of Anandaa Permaculture since the time you started putting out the videos and what a brilliant job you and your family have done of documenting this for the rest for us! We have a small plot of land in Kerala on which we are planning to build our family home. I quite loved the idea of Rohtak Domes (and to a lesser extent Madras Roof). I have a question - will either of these options be suitable for a heavy rainfall region like Kerala? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you Rajesh. Heavy rainfall should not be an issue, but you probably need overhangs to protect your walls and thats why traditional sloping roofs may be better for Kerala. But best to consult an architect and discuss the options

If you want hardened lime for plaster, it is available in kazhughu malai regions of Tamil Nadu

Also traditional mixture used contains kal sunnambu ( rock lime), Karu Patti ( palm jaggery contains molasses and dark brown in colour), kadukkai berry. The last two are for better adhesion and water proofing. Don't buy kilinJal sunnambu (shell lime) for roof work. For wooden rafters use mundhiri ennai ( cashew nut skin is removed by roasting, it contains termite proof oil, it is darker in colour), similar to linseed oil, available around Pudukkottai regions. There are lots of cheaters, stay safe, and all the best for your sustainable building projects. Bye

@@surajramakrishnan7141 very true, these structures always use compression and balance, steel rod used inside concrete improves tensile strength, so when heavy rain or flood or nearby construction etc occurs, there will be shift/disturbance in sub soil layers, wood rafters don't go through quality control in factory, now in this rain I have come across personally 2 houses which had CATASTROPHIC FAILURE.

In many places there is no awareness regarding this sustainable house construction, so even if someone like me want to build a sustainable house, I can't. No.1 reason is there are no architect in my state/rigion who are practicing sustainable construction. The local labourers have no experience to work on a sustainable building. No.3 is row material for such construction like lime plaster, wooden frames, stones, brick tiles, are not easily available.

We face all 3 hurdles that you mentioned. But if you are willing to persevere, you will find ways to make it happen. 1. Our architect had never built a house like this before, but we researched together and supported each other. 2. Local masons had no experience in this construction method - we got masons from Auroville and Udaipur to train them on rammed earth & lime plasters respectively, and they learnt quickly and managed to make it. 3. If you ask around you will find all materials locally. It is not that difficult. Do try.

Madras terrace roofing has been there for centuries... those architects trying to replicate the approach arent aware of the intricacies involved... so blindly dont say tht it wont work...

The strength of the madras roof is based on the mortar, the lime mortar. I don’t know how effective it will be to use cement.

DID YOU INSTALLED ANOTHER TWO MAJOR LAYER ON IT. THERE SHOULD ONE HORIZONTAL BRICK LAYER THAN LIME CREATE AND FINALLY WATER PROOFING LAYER. ONLY FIRST LAYER OF BRICK IS TRUE MADRAS ROOF.

We have plastered on top of the Madras roof and use reflective tiles to finish it
