In this new series titled Sustainable Home, we will take you through a series of videos on how to build a sustainable home. At Aanandaa, we are building an innovative and creative home, which is as sustainable as possible. We have explored several construction technologies and designs to ensure we have the most natural, resilient and energy efficient home.
In this video, Manisha, Jitesh and Iqbal bhai take you through an overview of how to make a Wooden Roof, its benefits and aesthetics. Footage of the construction process gives you an idea of how it has been put together.
The carpentry team led by Iqbal bhai is a talented crew that have demonstrated great skill and intelligence in building this roof. The beams are 3 inches by 6 inches in size and have been placed on the smaller edge, 2 feet apart. The wooden planks are about 2 inches in thickness and have been screwed in place with an overlapping groove to prevent any gaps and leakage. All the wood used here is Sal wood.
Sustainable architecture at Aanandaa is directed by Ar. Jitesh Malik from Studio Aureole. The integral design practice at their studio combines a commitment to environmental sensitivity with a contemporary design language and a pedagogical process. At Aananda, Jitesh creatively contextualised a diverse range of sustainable practices to collaboratively work towards an aesthetically enriching experience.
Studio Aureole team: Prabhjot, Richa, Mandav, Harshita and Tanvi
Collaborators/Experts: Lallan, Ashumi, Malvika (Mlime), Narayanji (Rohtak domes), Iqbal bhai (carpentry)

That was purely the architects design decision. Given our climate and needs of water harvesting/solar panel installation on the roof and overly aesthetics, he proposed flat roof would be better.

@farmaanandaa
@farmaanandaa Жыл бұрын
Kartar, the cement layers here are much thinner and only for the purpose of waterproofing and securing the roof. It much lesser compared to the thick concrete roof with steel bars which is usually made these days. The roofs with steel have a short life as the steel starts rusting and falling apart after 30-40 years. The steel and concrete heat up the roof as well. None of that happens with this wooden roof. I am sure it could be waterproofed with mud and brick tiles too, but we wanted to be extra careful with waterproofing as none of us had an experience of making wooden roofs. Hope that explains.

@farmaanandaa
@farmaanandaa 6 ай бұрын
Wooden roof is expensive. You will have to check the price of wooden planks and rafters, and also the cost of carpenters labour and estimate the cost. For the rammed earth walls, the material is cheap as it's just mud, gravel and lime. But you will need to get some formwork made with wood/metal sheets and pipes etc.. and the there is labour cost. You'll have to calculate that yourself.

Main problem i see with cob houses is the amount of wood one uses, specially to give it a beautiful look. Wood and cob go together. Problem one is the prohibtive cost of wood in India and Pakistan. Second is the chance of termites. Here wood and clay are a recipe for disaster. In US/ Canada the main advantage they have in sustainable living projects is that plenty of wood is available on the property which they are allowed to use. Timber is no issue. In Pakistan at least it's a major expense when constructing a house. Specially an adobe house.
