Warm inside the house retains when in cold climate. Little cool in inside when it is hot ouside I think this wooden roof keeps the inside temperature as neutral which is very good for our health Our ancient houses are mud walls which doesnot obsorb heat or cold, it acts like insulator, and coconut leaves used for roofing which is also a good insulator and protects us from harsh climate This is the same reason we have small doors and windows and full wooden windows Wooden roof is good, but it needs hot air ventilation like chimney, otherwise all the heat emitted from the earth will circulate inside the house

@farmaanandaa Жыл бұрын
Kartar, the cement layers here are much thinner and only for the purpose of waterproofing and securing the roof. It much lesser compared to the thick concrete roof with steel bars which is usually made these days. The roofs with steel have a short life as the steel starts rusting and falling apart after 30-40 years. The steel and concrete heat up the roof as well. None of that happens with this wooden roof. I am sure it could be waterproofed with mud and brick tiles too, but we wanted to be extra careful with waterproofing as none of us had an experience of making wooden roofs. Hope that explains.

@farmaanandaa10 ай бұрын
Wooden roof is expensive. You will have to check the price of wooden planks and rafters, and also the cost of carpenters labour and estimate the cost. For the rammed earth walls, the material is cheap as it's just mud, gravel and lime. But you will need to get some formwork made with wood/metal sheets and pipes etc.. and the there is labour cost. You'll have to calculate that yourself.

Main problem i see with cob houses is the amount of wood one uses, specially to give it a beautiful look. Wood and cob go together. Problem one is the prohibtive cost of wood in India and Pakistan. Second is the chance of termites. Here wood and clay are a recipe for disaster. In US/ Canada the main advantage they have in sustainable living projects is that plenty of wood is available on the property which they are allowed to use. Timber is no issue. In Pakistan at least it's a major expense when constructing a house. Specially an adobe house.
