@@TMPK Just curious how the paint holds up on the mdf joints. Would think over time a line would come through.
@TMPK
@TMPK 4 жыл бұрын
@@wesrobinson7366 if you get it sanded well the first time it hides the lines. But I think the end side of the MDF does absorb the paint different than the surface so a light sanding after the first coat might help with that. My personal mantel in my house is about 4 years old now and I haven’t noticed lines showing yet. Just use the glue liberally lol

I've been looking ALL OVER KZbin for someone to see how I can build a DIY mantel for an idea 💡 that I have for a space in my house. This has been the most entertaining straightforward video by far that I have seen. I really enjoyed watching this video that I 👀 watched it multiple times. I just wish that you labeled 🏷 everything down in the description box 📦 because I was so ready to run to Home Depot after watching this. 😂 I'll just have to keep watching and make a list of the materials that you mentioned. I just hope mine comes out as good as yours did 👍 wish me luck. 🤣

Is there a site you can point me to to help with estimating these types of projects?
@TMPK
@TMPK 4 жыл бұрын
@@luisasantin4989 no, I never know what to charge for new things either. What I do is try to estimate how long it will take me and then multiply that times $50 per hour labor. Sometimes it takes less time than I estimated, sometimes more, but I’ve found that $50 is a reasonable guess for bidding projects.

How did you cut the crown molding laying down on the chop saw. I thought it had to be upside down and backwards. Love the video.
@TMPK
@TMPK 3 жыл бұрын
I still haven’t made a how to crown mold video but cutting it flat is just another way. You’re ending up with the same cut but you’re beveling the saw and turning the miter. That’s a compound cut. If the room has all 45° corners you set the saw once and never move it again. You only flip the crown on its back or face. There’s also different types of crown, one sits on the wall and ceiling at 45° and one sits at 38°, pretty weird but that means different angles for each kind.

Jared, you inspired me to build this and I am just finishing up construction and thinking about painting the mantle surround. There is a lot of discussion on the best way to seal MDF to prevent swelling and prep for paint, so I thought I would ask the expert. What do you recommend? Thanks

I wish I knew! I’d just start with a primer and end with a semi-gloss. I don’t paint often but in my limited experience with painting mdf, it takes several coats, like at least 4. With light sanding in between coats. It’s not fun but it turns out so pretty 👌

Thanks! The one I made is around 600 or 700 material and labor unpainted. That’s with MDF sheets around $60! They used to be much cheaper

Wtf is this dudes problem.. 😭 nail gun to the beat of the most obscure songs, staring into my soul while hardly saying anything comprehensive, random eyeballs and effects.. I still don’t know how to make a mantle but this was superb.

I disagree. The nail gun was hardly vertically aligned with the given tempo and meter of the selected music repertoire. I’d be impressed if he could do that. I have a degree in music and I can’t make any of my pneumatic nailers work to be reliable percussion instruments. Maybe my battery powered Ryobi. That thing makes a better percussion instrument than it does a nailer. In all serious, It took me a few watches to get over the eccentricities of the video. Not my cup o’ tea. However, After 19 watches of the video and paying attention, I did build a kick ass fireplace. It is the best fireplace surround on KZbin. Thank You!

Thanks! I don’t have a playlist. I get my royalty free music from epidemic sound. And before that I tried artlist. So far I like epidemic better, mostly because of the sound effects they have as well

How do you paint it? To make it look so good?
@TMPK
@TMPK 3 ай бұрын
@@arthurgarzon2475 I don’t do any of the painting at work. I’m just the carpenter so I build it then leave. I’m pretty sure the painters use a sprayer though. Primer first, light sanding, paint, sand, paint again. MDF usually takes 3 to 4 coats of paint because it’s so absorbent.

Not sure if you are still answering questions about this video, but how do you determine the angle cut for the small inside trim on decorative boxes? I have followed this video all the way and I'm stuck! Do you flip trim over upside down?
@TMPK
@TMPK Жыл бұрын
Those are 90° angles, so 45° cuts. If you’re stuck on the base cap inserts, the crown mould is gonna be terrible 😬😅

Thank you for the video. We have followed your instructions and we are at the point of adding the coving. We only have a mitre cutting block with a 45-degree angle and we are super confused about how to do the 35 degree angle with a 30 degree bevel without the correct equipment. Does it have to be a 35 degree angle or would a simple 45 degree angle suffice? It looks fantastic thank you so much for the superb high quality video; best on KZbin.
@TMPK
@TMPK 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! That’s a tough one to explain in text. I would recommend searching “how to cut crown molding on mitre box” or something like that. There’s an “upside down & backwards” method for those who don’t have the compound angle saw. You would set the crown, upside down the way it would be sitting as if your box was the ceiling/wall corner, then simply cut it on a 45° angle

thanks! I always build the mantel specific to what size the wall and fireplace are. I normally like 6 inches from the fireplace box to the legs and 12 inches from the top of the fireplace box to the bottom of the mantel. And if the legs are 10 inch wide, I would make the part below the crown also 10 inches. The top is normally 2 inch thick and goes 5 inch each way off the left and right, and 5 inches off the front. But I guess that depends on crown size. I use a 5 1/4 crown. I’m sure someone online has similar plans if you need them, but it’s mostly a freestyle every time.
