I just watched your video. I like you mentioning your mistakes. That helps people a lot because most DIY people are not carpenters. Also, you have some sense of humor. I like that. I may want to make this bed someday. Thanks for the video.

Glad you liked it! I’m just out here trying to share my experiences with you, good or bad. I’ll be sure to keep my mishaps in the final edit. Because no project is complete without a mess up or two.

Great job. Am seriously looking to make something just like this. Your end result looks brilliant. Thank your for honesty showing all those potential pitfalls (mistakes). Am sure I will also find a few ' pitfalls' of my own but feel encouraged enough to have a go. Many Thanks. Ps thanks also to the people asking good questions .

Nice job! The door fronts on the bottom of the bed really make it looked built in. Does not look like a bed in hiding. Next project go for the twin. The Murphy door

Your design is just perfect! Iam almost finished with the bed portion. Can you please share the height for the cabinets and shelf?
@JefeDog2 ай бұрын
Very nice job! I bought the same exact kit, and found it very challenging. I made two right rails (similar to your non-mirroring verticals). Also, when all put together, I have larger gaps at the bottom portion of the folded up frame than I do the top. Figured I'd try to hide it with the trim when I get there. Also, you lucked out having the bottom cabinets match the dimensions of your faux cabinets. Mine will be somewhat larger, so not sure if it will look funny. In retrospect, not sure I'm handy enough for this kind of job. I'd probably buy something pre-built if I had to do it again.
@SatisfyDIY2 ай бұрын
Yeah I designed the faux cabinets to match the actual cabinets. Took a little planning ahead. It’s definitely a learned skill. There are definitely times I think I should have hired a professional to do it. But most of the things I want are “custom” and I’d be paying an arm and a leg for. Plus I love staying busy with projects. So on to the next.

Amazing! Great Job and thank you so much for the video with the details. I am going to start on it this week and very excited. Looking forward to your next project!! May I ask what kind of lumber you would recommend for the trims and the cabinets? What kind of sand paper grit would you recommend? - Thank you
@SatisfyDIY26 күн бұрын
For the trim I would just use some pre primed pine it is the easiest to finish. The cabinets I would go with some 3/4” poplar. Pricey but worth it. Sandpapers cheap. I’d get a pack that had varying grits from 80 up to 220

Great video! Definitely one of the better ones I've watched. Thank you for the pro tips on cabinet pulls. I noticed that a lot of people don't paint the interior of the murphy bed cabinet - why is that? Also, have you considered changing the headboard? One other thing, what did you do about your baseboards? Cut them off for flush mounting, or angle cut around them?
@flyashleyfly9 ай бұрын
I've totally made a good chunk of the same mistakes you did 🙃 I'm officially at the vertical stage 🙌🏾....buuuuut also realize all this really means is I'm maybe about halfway through considering filling, sanding, painting and building a cabinet to frame one side. Most days I totally feel like I'm over my head (....I don't REALLY know what I'm doing....mostly playing Ash the Builder 🤫). I'm still deciding on a hardware solution because the long ones I want are dumb expensive 🫥. Were you able to get the 1x3s flat once you screwed the pulls in?....Or should I maybe install the pulls before I secure the mattress support? Also (because I have no clue what I'm doing 😁) do you have any vides of how you built the cabinets? 🤔 Thanks!
@SatisfyDIY9 ай бұрын
Nobody knows what they’re doing. We’re all just figuring it out as we go. That’s what I tell myself at least. The 1x3’s I did get to sit flat by insetting the screw heads on the back side. I didn’t make much of a video for the built ins but I do have this short. kzbin.infokC5xWR-Ktns?si=vbs0wGNuM1W-RjSP

Question for you. I am getting ready to build one myself. The plans use mostly 3/4" (0.75") plywood. Quality sanded plywood is sold in 23/32" (0.71875") Yes, this is a tiny difference. Did you need to adjust anything for that difference?
@SatisfyDIY2 ай бұрын
I didn’t need to adjust anything! That should still work out just fine.

Did you ever have a problem with the cabinet lining up when you fold it up. I have some spaces on either side and I cant figure out why? How far are the pins supposed to go into the holes?
@SatisfyDIY26 күн бұрын
You should have a small gap for the bed to fold down freely. The key is making it look consistent all the way around. Much like a cabinet reveal.

Want to make this for my basement. Does the bed frame have more space than an actual queen mattress? Is there wiggle room? I was hoping to shorten height of the bed frame by a 2-3" bc of my ceiling height.
@SatisfyDIY26 күн бұрын
The frame does take up more space than a queen mattress. Just because of the box you are building it in.

You made a queen sized Murphy bed. What is the shortest the bed could've been, without the trim work? My ceiling is 92.5 inches, could I make it work?

Is the bed strong enough in the middle? Is it deflexing in the middle? I think the support beams are too small in height to prevent bending in everyday use.
@RussWilsonII Жыл бұрын
Looks great, man! Did you thin your cabinet paint down at all? Also, i'm curious why you couldn't just drill the holes for the handles all the way through -- was it a matter of the bolts not being long enough to make it through all of the material? If so, you could have just counter-bored through the back side until the handles bolts were sticking through enough to grab the handles -- and it would have made the painting easier -- I might be misunderstanding something, though. Looking forward to the next project!
@SatisfyDIY Жыл бұрын
I did thin the cabinet paint down some. May have had something to do with it running? I think it’s because I had the sprayer up so high and the window open in 90+ degree weather mainly. I probably could have drilled all the way through but it would have in my mind been more of a headache. I would have been drilling through the three-quarter inch faux cabinet styles, then the three-quarter inch plywood on the face of the bed, and then potentially the bed struts, depending on where they fell on my holes. I would have also had to remove the 1/4 inch panels that go on top of the struts to access the screws. Glad to see you are gonna stick around for the next one! Just give me some time to think of it! Might be some workshop cabinetry/organization.

Thanks for this video it was super helpful! I want to do something like this but I don’t know if the full vertical will hold the weight of the double mattress I have already. What mattress did you use? Did you go for a lightweight one? Is it comfortable?

I used a mattress that was over the recommended weight and it shows. Makes it much heavier when lifting and lowering.
