For those considering building a paint booth like this in your garage by hanging up plastic, it works great - ONCE. If you use the same plastic again, it will drop flecks of dried paint onto your new paint job if the plastic flexes even a little. You have to use all new plastic every time you want to spray color. It is generally OK to use the same plastic if you are spraying primer because it is still in a phase that it is easy to fix, but any time you are spraying color or clear you need to use new plastic to avoid getting garbage on your new paint job.

Finnegan - I just want to say thank you, about 6 years ago I took on a fairly large project vehicle after my grandpa passed, I rebuilt the drivetrain from the ground up, refinished the engine bay.. learned a lot despite being a car guy well before that. Since then I'm been getting projects and just tinkering and like to think of myself as someone that knows a pretty decent bit about vehicles, but I learn something new in every single one of your videos. I appreciate that and I appreciate your down to earth approach with sharing knowledge and processes. It helps a lot of us that do enjoy cars, but maybe have not had as much experience or have not been exposed to as many projects as someone such as yourself. So thank you!

For everybody who wants to do try using a makeshift paint booth like this: You want OVERpressure in the paintbooth to avoid dirt and dust beeing sucked into the booth. So it may be better to install a box fan that sucks the air out plus a bigger one (or two) to blow fresh air from the outside into the booth. Place the blowers opposite to the sucking fan. Those need filters too of course plus they should be installed some what higher off the ground. Use a table outside the booth to support them. This is of course not overly critical if you are just priming with rattle cans or the like, but if we are talking of painting the car e.g. with a paint gun: Do it! It's only an additional fan or two. Basically the walls of the paint booth always need to bulge out.

I had a similar setup in my garage. I used dollar store vinyl drape sheets with a box fan and a filter. Filter got clogged within 5 minutes of me starting to spray so I ditched it. Ended up creating a mini hole in the ozone above my house but it worked. It was nice being able to spray clear and having the ability to see without a cloud of paint dust.

To make a REALLY clean paint booth, you want it positive pressure (fan blowing in) with a filter on the intake. That way only clean air getting in has been filtered. With a negative pressure environment (fan blowing out) it is sucking in dirty air through all the cracks.

My 76 C10 is soaking up room in my shop, waiting for me to do the metal work, finish the 6.0 install, notch the frame a little bit, change the leafs, flip the axle and make it a driver again. I could do it in five days.. but I am old and its cold out there in the shop, part of the problem with living in the north. Yes I own my shop now... and is glorious. After the second wife got the second house and garage in the second divorce, I bought some land full of trees in the middle of nowhere for dirt cheap. Then I cleared some of the trees and used them as the poles to hold the roof trusses up, poured some concrete and built a 32x48x12 shop for less than $18k.. and its overbuilt with 8" to 14" diameter logs holding the roof up. Sheeted with 5/8 OSB and then roofing steel, some foam board insulation on the bottom of the trusses, and boom I had a place to work on my junk. Started in July put the sliding door up the second week of November. Thats a lot of work for one guy who hired three guys to help with the slab, and two guys to help with the roof, but did everything else. Then I put three shipping containers together and lived in that for 5 years. Priorities.. Two years ago I reconfigured the containers from a 460sqft room to a 1050 sqft two story with a loft slightly bigger room on a concrete pillar foundation sitting on bedrock. I can paint my cars and truck easily, along with doing everything else I need to do while rebuilding them, and I splurged on a lift for the shop. Perhaps this year I can get running water in the house for the first time since 2013. Priorities.. and I am off to the gym to take a shower, do some laundry and buy more wood pellets to heat this place. I rattle can painted my 70 GTO in the parking lot of my apartment building in Charleston SC when I was stationed down there in the early 2000s.

I did a similar thing when I bought back my totaled car from an insurance company. I bought a $40 foldable shelter from Walmart, wrapped it in cling-wrap, put two box-fans on one side, and painted my body panels w/ Harbor Freight painting hardware. Even returned the shelter when I was done! But to be fair, some of the fabric was ripping apart during the initial setup, so it was going back anyways. P.S. That primer you're using, DO NOT USE DEGREASER TO CLEAN IT!!! I used the same stuff with my front fender, and it literally turned the primer into a syrup-like substance. Took two hours to clean off.

You should have the booth be positive pressure not negative pressure like you did. You should have two filtered fans blowing in and one filtered fan blowing out so that air will want to escape from all the little cracks and edges. With a negative pressure room like you built air will suck in from every crack and seam giving you less control of your environment. Other than that looks great, a little over kill for rattle cans but great.

Rattle can primer good enough to keep rust off temporarily , most not water proof . I hope after shake down that you take it back apart and have a professional paint it with catalyzed primers and paints . Knowing that you will probably drive this in all kinds of conditions , if proper materials are used , it will stop rust from popping up in 2 or 3 years .

The easy up shelter makes this job quite a bit easier than building a paint booth out of stud lumber but and tarps and plastic sheeting. That said what I don't understand if you went to the trouble to build a temporary paint booth why not use a paint gun instead of rattle cans. I purchased a paint gun from Horror Freight and while I would not use it to shoot color on my cars or trucks it certainly works just fine for epoxy primers and or sealers and doesn't do a bad job for painting things like shop equipment purchased at auction.

Back in the '80's I painted half a dozen cars in my parents driveway. You don't need a spray booth. I would start prep at 6am, then spray between 8-10 am before the wind picks up. The worst thing to happen was a few bugs landing on the paint before it dried, and they were easily buffed out. From the comments, it sounds like spray booths have more problems.

You want positive pressure, fan blow into the booth. That way all air coming in passes a filter. With negative pressure (fan sucking) any place with even a small crack is a place for dirt to get it. Also with the fan sucking in when you open a door it will pull dirt in. You also do not need a second filter. Its not like a temp tent is air tight.

Great idea, I want to make a similar structure. It sounds like the plan is to drive the truck a long distance in primer only. If this is accurate, I would not recommend it. Primer does not protect the truck from rust, especially of you encounter rain or high humidity. Most primers are porous, unless specified otherwise. They are meant to provide a coat for the protective base and clear to adhere to. But, this vid is a few years old. Hopefully all went well.

@@chasejones3456 Yes sir, totally correct. If the only air entering the booth is filtered, and you have positive air pressure in the booth, no contamination can enter the booth and destroy your paint job.
