another way to lay out stud center fast is to mark three quarter inch back from the 16,32,48,ect marks and mark an x to the right of it, then use ure speed square to transfer the mark from bottom plate to top plate,this way all you have to do is line up the edge of the stud with youre mark and you dont have to mark the centre of the stud,your 3/4 inch back will assure that youre stud centres are true,x marks the spot

Always burn the first 3/4 inch, then measure 16 inch on center then your drywall will split the stud and the 48 inch location and 96 inch location and so on. And invest in a compressor and some air tools! Oh and a Laser.

Whether you go back 3/4 of an inch on every 16 or forward 3/4 of an inch and mark the left side, or mark the center, or go back 3/4 on the first and then move the tape, they all work. But some methods are much easier in production settings where other people need to read your plate layouts for L blocks and stuff, as long as YOU know where that stud lands for your marks, there are more ways than one to skin a cat.

if I place the studs centered at 16" increments, the 2 ends will not be 16" from the studs. The first stud will be off 3/4". You start at the left end of the plate, so you can't center that stud on the end. I was taught to measure 16" and then place the stud to the right of the mark. This will give you exactly 16" on center.

How does that way affect the application of drywall later? Wouldn't you want the edge of an 8 foot sheet of drywall to be flush with one end and cover only the first half of a stud at the other end (hit on the center of it)? It seems like it would be off center if you did it your way. You would then have to make a lot of unnecessary cuts each sheet of drywall. Same thing with the plywood on an exterior wall. It wouldn't be a problem if the wall was shorter than eight feet long, but most are longer.

Hi @@GeneJordan , When i worked construction we never used drywall shorter than the length of the wall. Having a butt/end joint in the middle of a wall is a no no. It is much more labor to finish properly. Order the propper length of drywall for the project. If you have a butt/ end joint in the middle of a wall it will virtually ALWAYS be visible/stand out in the finished product. That being said, I am a fan of Leah's teaching/video method. Never trying to make the video about HER, but about the subject. Thanks Leah!

Thank you for the helpful video and great clear explanation. However, I noticed that the first stud when starting the wall will never be 16" on center. If measured from center of first stud (edge of plates) the next one would actually be 15" on center. (after the first one all will be ok) I see that everyone in the industry does that. But if looking for the first stud from a wall measured like this,(and taking into account the drywall (1/2") the 16" on center measurement (on first stud) will always be off and the nail would miss by 1/2" past the stud. Any reason why this is not mentioned.

+Hector Munoz The reason it is done this way is because when you start the first piece of drywall at the first stud, the edge of the drywall does not start at the center of the first stud, but at the outside edge. But if you laid out subsequent studs as she described, the other edge of the drywall (assuming it is 8 feet long) will land on the center of the 7th stud.

I am a licensed contractor. Great video. One detail is that when laying out a wall you do sometimes have to consider where you measure from. On a wall with window and door opening you may have to begin your layout 3/4" in from the end of the wall, if you want your window and doors in exactly the specd locations.

seejanedrill .. Leah, I'm framing up a partition wall tomorrow in a FINISHED room, to divide it in 2. Do the sides of the new wall need to be fixed into studs in the existing wall? There aren't any studs where my wife wants this wall to go, and she won't let me back it up because it'll make the space too small. I'm worried that only having the bottom plate nailed to the sub-flooring won't give it enough stability. The top plate and d sides would only be nailed into existing drywall. Thoughts?

Excellent as usual Leah. I like that you don't use annoying music, your explanations are great and thorough. You also have the camera zoom in to see better detail. I am building a closet in an existing room. Do you have any videos on that? I don't know how to space the header and the end boards from the other studs.
