I built two computers for my shop last year, once in August and one in September. The hardest part was finding the case. The one for my desk need 5.25" bays (BR DVD Burner). That was hardest part. I think I settled on a "Air" case. The i5 System with the low end RTX3060 video card seems more stable than the I7 with RTX3090 video card and has been dead nuts reliable for a bench computer.

Between steps 5 and 6, I did a preliminary startup of my MoBo. This step was included in LTT’s lengthy video on building a PC. After completing step 5, attach the cables from your PSU to MoBo and EPS power. If you are using a CPU with no iGPU, you will also install your dGPU and necessary power. Then turn on the PSU. Next, using the tip of a screwdriver, you want to jump the pins on the MoBo that represent the power switch of a Case. You only need to POST or jump into the BIOS; we are not installing your OS of choice or altering any settings in the BIOS yet, just doing preliminary checks to make sure everything is in order before installing the MoBo to the Case Chassis. Your system checks at this point are to see a BIOS/POST, ensure all installed components (CPU, RAM, NVMe/SATA M.2 SSDs) are recognized by the system, and to check thermal applications of air or AIO coolers. If you are using a custom loop, you can skip the last check. Power off the PSU to fix any issues. If everything checks correctly, continue the build; otherwise, troubleshoot the problem before continuing on with the rest of the build.

Good tips. I might add : if you're flashing the BIOS, make sure to use a smaller (4/8/16GB) USB stick with flashing led. I lost two days thinking my motherboard was dead but it was just a dodgy USB stick that the BIOS for some reason was rejecting.

I wanted to provide some feedback from my earlier comment two weeks ago. I can confirm having no experience whatsoever other than watching this video I managed to build my PC and it posted first time! The only issue I had were two fans spinning but not lighting up this was a simple fix as you can imagine. The other nervous part for me was seating the CPU however that was easy enough it was only afterwards when I mounted an AIO (not shown in this video) I realised I mounted it wrong after undoing it and trying to pull a way the pump it was stuck due to the thermal paste I pulled so hard the whole CPU popped out I got lucky though no broken pins. If other people in the same situation make sure you undo the lever holding the CPU first if you can get to it mine was AM4. All in though was a huge success it looks awesome and it’s fast. Jason I also used your affiliate links for Windows 11 pro thanks for this series and for link! I got this!

Great video, Jason! Having been building PCs for over 20 years, the best piece of advice is to plan ahead to minimize any potential problems. For example, if the mobo you're looking at states it might need a BIOS flash to post with the CPU... I would just choose another mobo that's already compatible, if possible? Even though flashing a BIOS is painless, it's another step in what becomes multiple steps when building a PC. I can build one in about three, four hours, but I've been doing this for decades, like Jason. A new builder is going to have a certain amount of anxiety and anything you can do to minimize, or eliminate that anxiety is what will make building their first PC a fun and enjoyable experience vs. a frustrating and draining one.

Thanks for the encouragement at the beginning! It's been a decade since I built one (have replaced a few pieces here and there). I had a not great experience with my first one before that in college (never got it working, even with IT pros testing everything and checking my work), and the same issue when I tried the 2nd time (but was able to figure out on my own what it was that time around; had to do with my case- was the same case both times, but more info online to help), so I was anxious. I wasn't too concerned about putting the parts together, just about making sure all the connections were right and getting it to post that made me drag out my PC build from early Dec to today. Got the last few parts put in and connections made last weekend and watched this (to double check my own work) and the after build set up video before taking a deep breath and booting it up; it worked! I just had to figure out some drivers to get online with it to finish setting it up. :)

I just finished my 3rd PC build. First one was a very long time ago. These last two were much easy. This one was for my 75 yr old In-laws who have been going through a laptop a year. I talked them into letting me build one, so we can just replace components when they break and upgrade when needed. This video helped a lot. I just ran benchmarks and it's just what they need. Nuclear Submarine - Desktop, Raft - Gaming, Surfboard - Workstation.

Thank you for the content! I've just built a new setup this January. First of all, cant express how much a decent case helps with the process (I had o11 d evo) Good reminders about peeling off a plastic from m.2 heatsink, and taking off a pci-e slot cover from GPU. I built around 10 PCs for the last 3 years, and derped and forgot to do both couple times :) Also some basic advice that could be useful as well: - Be sure to prepare flash drive with BIOS beforehand, if you are upgrading your only system (might seem obvious, but I actually had friends, who didn't realize that and came to me for help) - If your motherboard has BIOS Flashback you might as well do that every time before assembling your PC regardless of whether it posts or not. More often than not your MB will have outdated BIOS, so why not take it off your mind right away and chill. - If you have CPU with in-built graphics you can try first post w/o discreet graphics card to confirm everything works. Especially for beginners. It takes like 2 more minutes, but it either ensures that everything works w/o graphics, so if it does not post with graphics you've already narrowed it down to one issue. Or if it actually does not post w/o graphics, you wont be scared as much as in another scenario (because graphics is normally the most expensive part, and you might instantly think there's an issue with it) - If you have many case fans, think which ones will be intaking air, which ones exhausting, and how you will set them up before putting everything else inside the case. You might not have enough space to maneuver if you have already installed everything else If you have AIO: - If you have a complicated AIO assembly, or any assembly in your case, and you wont to try a first post before put everything into a case, you could put AIO WITHOUT thermal paste, so you dont need to re-apply it in case you end up needing to remove the pump from CPU for some reason. There will be enough contact even w/o thermal paste for your CPU not to overheat for a few minutes. - Decide which side you want your tubes to go before installing the radiator for AIO. - Make sure you place the radiator the way its tubes contact is at the same level or above the pump (e.g. either orientation at the top, or tube facing top for a vertical mount, don't mount radiator at the bottom, even if the case allows it)

One of the things that helped me build my first pc was looking at guides and downloading the motherboard manual and reading it while parts are on the way, figuring out which wires are used and what goes where As such, my advice for everyone is to read the motherboard manual in advance, as well as watch a guide like this. Also, as Jason said, extra thermalpaste won't hurt. I messed up installing cpu cooler and had to wait for thermalpaste to be delivered. Edit: Also, if u have the case already, familiarising urself with it is worth it. Maybe even preplanning cable management (I did this and it sped up my pc building by a mile). My noob self spent a full half an hour at least figuring out which wire in my case was for argb (had to disconnect from pre installed hub and plugging an adapter >.>

Excellent video! Very handy for those of us who haven't built a PC in a while (15 years for me). One minor correction regarding "FAT32" mentioned at 17:26. FAT32 uses 32 bits of data for identifying data clusters on the storage device, hence the name. I also don't see your full AIO guide mentioned in the description. No worries, I'll track it down. Keep up the great work, Jason!

I installed the CPU on the Motherboard and installed it in the case. I installed the RAM and NVME. I connected all fans and power connections to the Motherboard. I then plugged in the PSU and...nothing. No LEDS or RGB on the board...PSU didn't turn on. I checked all the connections multiple times...nope. I took out the PSU and connected it to another system and it fired right up. I haven't installed the GPU as I wanted to check the power first. The only thing left is a bad MB...thoughts please.

Step 7 triggered some PTSD; I upgraded my PSU (Core Reactor 750) last year, and trying to install the EPS cables without removing the motherboard was an expletive-laden nightmare. Excellent as always. I followed your advice before Christmas and me and my son built his first gaming PC in a day. The only thing we found to be tricky was installing the fiddly cables on the motherboard and tidying up the wiring of the rgb fans. One word of advice with AMD: if you install the standard Wraith fan don’t throw the retention bars away! I did and when - this week - we came to install a liquid cooler I found that it would only mount on the retention bars.

A few months ago when I built my first PC I had to perform a BIOS flashback. It went fairly well other than my Asus ROG Z690-F motherboard wouldn't take a 8GB 3.0 USB stick for the BIOS flashback. Also I learned a lot from looking up a build guide for my specific case. This filled in the gaps for what I didn’t know about case wiring, rgb wiring, and probably other things, because they specifically had the cables and connectors I had. Not a suggestion for the video, just a note from a first time builder

Hi Jason, I just wanted to say that your videos by far helped me the most out there! I started out comparing "best build" guides, and heck I got lost so quickly. Then I found your channel. Unlike everybody else, you don't tell us "buy xyz", but you educate us what we have to look for. I would have bought a far too expensive CPU without your channel. Since I built my last PC 9 years ago this video is super helpful. Keep up the good work!

Working on my first build for productivity ie. Blender but with enough gaming power to run MSFS. Best sources for parts so far have been Ebay and Mercari. Asus Rog Strix z590E Seagate Firecuda NVMe SSD 2TB Corsair CX550F PS Deep Cool Matrexx50 ATX Undecided on if an RX 6600 xt/ RTX 3060 ti GPU would be overkill.

I've just started out on my journey to building my first gaming PC. I've always loved PC gaming over consoles, but could never afford a good enough machine to play anything current on. I've been doing research on whether I want Ryzen 5 or 7, i5 or i7 (or Ryzen 9? Or i9?), which GPU for my budget and what I want exactly (or how much longer I'm willing to save!) and of course looking into everything else from motherboards to RAM, cooling solutions, and cases. Your channel has been an invaluable resource for me. Between you and Gamer's Nexus, I'm making steady progress on 4 possible builds (thank you, NewEgg, for the build list feature!). So, thank you for all the work you put into how-to and compatibility videos!

I've never owned my own PC in my life. Grew up in an "anti-tech" household. I'm now 25, and while shopping for a laptop for school, I decided I should just build my own PC. That was 3 weeks ago. I have spent every second of my free time since then learning, at least half of that time on this channel. I then spent nearly **20** Hours assembling it. While I can only post through the motherboard and have some major GPU troubleshooting to do, I have build a technically-functional PC, mostly due to the info from these video. This video and Linus Tech Tips "how to build a PC the last guide you'll ever need" in particular got me through so much of the building process. Thanks for all the help! Hoping to get this gpu figured out within the next few days and be working/gaming soon 🤞 Update: GPU fixed, working on software 🎉
