I’m about to do this, but won’t make my boxes so long. Thanks for your excellent instructions and hacks on how to make and use jigs to even out the bowing in the wood. I don’t know where you live, but your ground is very forgiving; if I try to hammer that PVC pipe in the ground here (most times of the year), it would be like trying to drive it into concrete. If I go ahead and get it done, I’ll be able to do it because spring our monsoon season here in Central Texas. I finally ordered a book. Several years ago, I had ordered the weekly feed, but didn’t have the set up for it, so didn’t get far. I’m gonna try again, but with more adherence to the system this time, firstly, by abandoning my old square ft beds. I’m surprised that treated wood is being used, as it does have ground contact, but I’m not the author of the method, so, despite my advanced age, have much to learn. LOL Thanks again for your video. It was very helpful.😊

Thanks for the comment, and good luck with your garden. I’m NE Texas, 60 miles east of Dallas.

@@FourDRanch Texas is so big…there’s quite a difference in land, terrain, climate and therefore, grow zones here, huh? Y’all have more change of season than we do here in zone 8b. I always say we have two seasons here; summer and almost summer. Happy Gardening this season; abundant crops and NO drought! Though, it’s hard to remember drought in the middle of the spring monsoon right now. Six weeks from now, we’ll wish we had some of this danged rain….feast or famine, huh?

Thanks so much. I just started a garden this year too. Literally in less than a week I have seen pallets all over town and have filled up my car with them. I’m not the most skilled with woodwork but the way you have listed your beds is a great way for me to try. I want to get some fall crops and plant some garlic for next spring.

It’s 30-0-4 and also has calcium. I just put a little around my first tomato transplants yesterday. We’ll see how it works.

@@FourDRanch ok, I was looking at Mittleider Gardening Course from 2014 not the latest book. 😒 lol I’ll search again. I’m glad you caught that. Seeing as I can’t get great sawdust where I live, LDS says I can try rice hulls. I’m just excited to get started. Thank you for the clarification.

I used cypress sides and posts. Was worried about pressure treated wood near food but after 4 to 5 years its starting to break down. Will probably change to PT wood like yours later. New subscriber here.

Maybe I missed it but you didn't say how deep your boxes are... those boards appear to be 2x10s... are they?
@FourDRanch
@FourDRanch Жыл бұрын
they are 2x8 boards, so the depth of the grow boxes is roughly 7 inches. Thanks for watchin! if you have any more questions send them my way!!

What do you do with rocky soil where it would be impossible to hammer those pvc pipes in?
@FourDRanch
@FourDRanch Жыл бұрын
Good question, I’m not sure what to do instead. The book says to remove everything that will interfere like rocks, stumps, trees, etc. if that’s not possible, maybe select another location. You can also use other stakes like wood or rebar, if that would work.
@DanaPrice-os9hh
@DanaPrice-os9hh Жыл бұрын
@@FourDRanch Yeah, rebar would work. Trying to set up 4 10-ft beds. Thanks for the reply!

Shouldn't the inside area of the grow boxes be 18 inches wide? I ask because, if people use different widths of timber, they are going to get very different sized growing areas. e,g, someone using 3" wide timber will have growing area width of just 12" - while someone using 1" wide timber will have a growing area of 16".wide.
@FourDRanch
@FourDRanch 2 жыл бұрын
To be very precise, I followed the mittleider book exactly and they call for using 2"x8"x 8 foot treated lumber. Which is effectively 1.5 inches wide. The book says to cut 2 18" pieces for the ends of the box, and clearly shows the ends screwed into the ends of the 2x8s. Therefore the inside of the box is only 15" wide, so that is exactly how I built mine. You and your calculations are correct and using different timber would make the growing area a different size. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching my videos!!
