In her global exploration of Indigenous design systems, architect Julia Watson researches enduring innovations that could help us counter the challenges of climate change. From floating villages to living root bridges that strengthen over time, Watson introduces us to some of these resilient solutions -- and shows how they can teach us to design with nature, instead of against it.

Sky Gravity the whole point of this video was to show how these communities are using their wisdom to build a future for the coming generations like the bridges they built in India for floods. The modern problems ur talking about can be easily solved by everyone not being an idiot and wanting a “better” “easier” lifestyle.

I don't believe it's so much about updating, trendy, or anything like that (i.e. out with the old, in with the new). There's always going to be concrete roads, sidewalks, walkways, parking lots and such. I believe it's more to do with revisement such as repurposing perhaps. Maybe even, transitioning, so to speak.

Good info, Julia. I don't only see these ancient engineering concepts as amazing and resilient but I also see them as highly prone to safe innovation and upgrading. I study infrastructure and architecture and civil engineering and I think that especially that idea with the mangrove tree roots can be upgraded so that the roots can be moulded into bridges faster and sturdier, without damaging their resilience, the idea and the plan is in my head but I'm not spilling it here because it's highly underdeveloped. But your information made it all the more helpful to think of better infrastructure.

What a wonderful way for our future progressive architects to go. These days we can see examples of eco-friendly housing areas complexes or small areas in cities. They are beautiful. A while back I watched a video of some fun, well-done artistic imitations of nature in a park in Singapore (I think). So why not amp it up by amping it back? Sounds about right for the times we are in. Correctly done, it could be absolutly breathtakingly beautiful, I believe. And we'd be supporting this planet that supports us.

CanyonMartin I haven’t thought of this idea when I made my comment. Your point stands true that this teacher I mentioned here actually had to immerse herself in the indigenous people’s community in order for her to learn how they used those materials in building their shelters. What they did there worked perfectly with their culture and living conditions. It’s more like me appreciating the way they have built things while utilizing what they got. I honestly think too that if we learn to integrate the ancient wisdom of building infrastructures within our urban architecture, then maybe perhaps we won’t have to think of it as us “devolving” rather transcending towards another feat, just like how us humans usually do.

This is just Absolutely amazing! I mean, personally, as a child growing up, I've had these kinds of ideas in my head. And I'm talking just playing and pretending! Some of my siblings, friends, and I would play outside and pretend we were either living in the woods and surviving productively, or stranded on a deserted island and surviving the same. We came up with all kinds of ideas too. How we'd live under certain circumstances, building structures to live in, how and what we'd eat, etc. Idky, but that's one of the things we'd do when play pretending. And she's right. It works! All of these natural resources we should have NEVER destroyed and forgotten! Many don't seem to realize how nature, while replenishing herself constantly, has given humans an abundance we'd need to live and survive together for countless ages! And it was free to do so really. Sadly, while we've been taking and taking, we've done nothing to give back in return. And we've forgot how this planet has given us so much to live by exhaustively, because mankind have been too wrapped up in greed, hate, and senseless fighting. All of these things, among so many other things, is one sure fire way of killing our planet and all she's given, all because of profit and gain. It wasn't supposed to be this way. Because of our actions, we are killing ourselves. Now, if we'd all just stop and listen to feel it, you'll notice how it definitely feels like (and now it's becoming more visible) Earth is dying. If we would just give back equally as she's given, maybe she'd think about living and giving again too! And we'd be surprised at all of the amazing possibilities we are capable of achieving, when we work together.
