Awesome, I have only recently seen these types of tube benders as the 'ebay pipe benders' tend to be 'tube kinkers'. I was thinking of doing something similar to this but as an attachment to a hydraulic press. Good work!

Thanks mate. I have found others are not necessarily honest about what really works and what doesn't. The main reason the modified pipe benders don't work, is because the radius of the dies is too tight.

On the harbor freight style pipe bender if you fab a lock on the top of the die where the tube cannot raise up during the bend and kink they work great. Just slow. I drilled holes in my die base and with 3/8 rolled steel made a couple of d rings that I thread the tube between the die and the d rings and the tube cannot rise out of the die during the bend.. There are some similar tricks to making these work on youtube, Harbor Freight bender mods.

Hi. You need a separate die for each diameter of tube you use, so if you can stick to the one size it is better for you. I got my die from "The Affordable Bender" via ebay. Here is the link to the one I used which is 1 3/4" but they make them in a range of sizes. www.ebay.com.au/itm/Affordable-Bender-Roll-Cage-Tube-Bender-1-3-4-DIE-SET-ONLY-/331906400979?hash=item4d4729c2d3:g:ZTEAAOSwaNBUdPFs

I'm also a bit confused regarding the measurements of die's - Is a die sizing (like the one used in this) relative to the OD of the tubing or the ID. I've bought 32nb (32mm ID which is approx 42mm OD) pipe in the past to use on a pipe bender but it kinks... I've been told to use a tube bender, but it's pipe, so it's all a bit confusing really. The ebay page lists sizing, but what are they referring to?
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 7 жыл бұрын
You have to use 'tube' not 'pipe' for a roll cage. Tube is always measure by OD and it needs to be the correct cold drawn stock for the job. I could only find 2 places in Sydney that stocked it and it is only used for roll cages.

It's really sad how sensitive everyone has to be about the way welds look. Some stupid twelve year old kid sees a flawless weld on the Internet then proceeds to attack everyone who has a weld that looks different. Welds can look like garbage and still hold 100%. Don't worry what trolls say. Next time someone attacks your weld, go to their channel. IF they have zero videos of welding, promptly ignore or even block them. Losers. :) Great work bud. Subscribed!
@Uknowcousteau
@Uknowcousteau 7 жыл бұрын
I agree! I have an AAS in Welding Technology and have been in the field for roughly 5 years since. I think it is a bit harder to get by in the field with a rough looking weld as there are some extreme nitpicking inspectors out there. (Most of which do not hold a CWI, and hardly know a thing about the process) Really for welding at home, as long as you see both pieces of parent metal breaking down and you are filling in that space with filler metal. You'll have the proper fusion you need to create a weld as strong as the steel you are sticking together. -- Furthermore, if that weld does fail eventually but it splits right down the middle. (IE it doesn't tear towards and edge or toe of the weld.) You did everything you could as the welder, you'll just need more reinforcement next time, or a redesign of the joint is required.
@btarrh
@btarrh 5 жыл бұрын
The welding quality isn't his fault. The problem is he's in Australia and since welders osculate AC/DC which spins clockwise in the northern hemisphere they tend to spin counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere which throws the welding machines off and although the welds are strong they don't look as great. The way to counteract this is to either make backward "e" 's as you weld or weld backwards. If you're not ambidextrous (able to use the right and left hands equally well) then welding backwards isn't an option because it will just throw your whole technique off. I know this because I frequent Australia and as an off-road vehicle builder this was a major problem at first. There is a third option but you need an electrician that has a excellent understanding of electricity theory and can switch the poles on the outlet. This is expensive so it's easier to just weld with the backward "e" pattern.

Jeff great videos very inspirational. Additionally a huge thank you so very much that you are doing your series with your wife included and doing some work. Nothing sexier than watching your wife participating and enjoying your hobby right along with you. I have a couple very dumb questions that may be very obvious to other people but for some reason I’m missing them. Sorry to ask are you attaching the tubing for the end of the mandrel die to make it follow the die as you apply pressure with The jack? Or does it just move with the die as you pump the jack? Also you had mentioned drilling additional holes in the 90° upright leg members to allow bends greater than 90°. Is this the roller axle mounting point you are moving? Again sorry to ask a simple questions. I need a tube bender of this type to build a roll cage for use in my 1957 VW Beetle, which I am building for vintage racing. Thank you for all your hard work filming, editing, title work, mixing and compiling your videos. They are of great quality, entertaining and inspirational. Lastly greetings from America!
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry I don't really understand the question. The tube does not slide in the die. it is clamped at one end of the die, which is where you start your bend, and then as the die rotates it pulls the tube around with it to make a nice bend. It is not a mandrel bend like you would find with an exhaust system. That is a different type of bending that can't be used with cages. The extra holes are for the roller, although you can't really do much more than 90degrees anyway at that is the limit of the die.

@HomeBuiltByJeff

+ollydubhead That would probably make it even better, but it is acceptable for the Australian standard. The only issue I don't like about the sand method is the potential for tube to rust from the inside out.

I just measured it up from the die I bought, and the particular hydraulic jack I had. As you may have seen on my video of how NOT to make a roll cage tube bender kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXiYYqiYlN97ors you can see that the die is the most important part. You can see my blueprint for this here kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGLdpGaNet2Xpck which basically takes into account for the exact measurements for my die and jack, which, unless you had the exact same bits would be different. I am not at hoe at the moment, but when I get back, I may try to make up something a bit more accurate so you can follow and maybe even do another video on how to measure it putting in the measurements for the particular jack and die you use.
