We did it. We made 2 & connected them like Legos. It was so easy & cost a little less. We bought the size of lumber that we wanted 2x6x4.

Hi Evie…..your video is spot on for me. I’m retired. I’ve never gardened before. Recently I’ve been working on cleaning out flower beds and planting new plants. What a job! But I’m enjoying it. Glad to stumble onto your video. Now for my question: I’ve got an 8’ wide strip of yard on one side of my house that doesn’t get used. It’s about 20’ long. The previous owner covered this area with pea rock over landscaping cloth. I’ve been considering what to do there. Most recently I’m thinking about raised beds. I like yours very much. Especially since I’m doing this project by myself. I really don’t like the pea gravel but reeeally don’t want to deal with getting rid of it. I know I’m long winded….. So, do you think I can construct this on top of the existing gravel. Do I need another layer of landscape cloth on top of the gravel? Thanks in advance. Oh, by the way, your property is lovely. Jacki

Hi Jacki! I am totally with you on not wanting to deal with the pea gravel! Yes, you can certainly assemble a raised bed over the pea gravel and I recommend placing landscape fabric over it before setting up the raised beds because it will 1) prevent soil from packing in among the pea gravel 2) protect the soil and root system of your plants from the gravel, and 3) yet be permeable, allowing excess water to drain through to the pea gravel layer to reduce the chances of root rot. Happy gardening! 🌱

Thanks for this easy raised bed construction. My concern would be nothing connecting upper and lower sections and would sections may not stay put? Using 2*12 would keep the blocks together.

You’re welcome! I considered using 2x12 but ended up using 2x6s because 2 of them were less expensive than the equivalent 2x12 at the time. The blocks are quite sturdy and will keep the boards in place, especially when the raised bed length is 4-6 feet. Since ours are 8 feet I’ll likely add bracing in the middle on each side using scrap 2x4s at some point. Thanks for your comment!
