I went through the US Air Force's Arctic Survival school and slept in a shelter with almost the same design (except the head of the shelter was a tripod design instead of being wedged against a tree; I had a tarp to skin it with; and we used a combination of boughs and snow for insulation). I slept in it for two nights, and it got as cold as -30°F. I can confirm this shelter works surprisingly well. It's not a mansion, but it'll keep someone as dumb as me from dying.

I remember in 4th grade and my cousin, my sister, and I went out in to the woods at our grandparents house during fall, found a fallen tree, and made this type of shelter. It's still up and hunters frequently use it because it is so well hidden.

just got back from a hunting trip for shits and giggles we tried building a 2 man shelter and a fire to get things going. however it was very wet and swampy so thanks to your videos we brought some help. the only thing that ended up working to get the fire going cause bark and tree beards weren't lighting I brought some dry twigs and a pencil sharpener worked like a charm. thanks for all your tips you truly know what your doing cheers mate.
