So about 5 days ago I had the idea to raise some quail with no prior background or experience. I started watching your videos and they gave me the confidence to jump right into it. I'm making your 3 stack design right now and including the egg roll out bins. Great content and detail, i'll be following. Thanks!

@garballs1443
@garballs1443 2 жыл бұрын
@@MimiSupreme I started with x20 1day olds and ended up with x14 after I culled the extra males. I only used the top 2 tiers of the cage. 2/5 male/female ratio. They started laying eggs and after a couple of weeks I incubated the first batch. x36 eggs in the incubator, x33 ended up fertile, and all x33 hatched and were healthy. When those x33 were about a week old we got hit by hurricane Laura, devastating damage with my home and property and everywhere nearby. 10% of homes in my neighborhood we're unlivable or destroyed. I kept up with all the quails best I could and all 33 survived until adulthood and started laying. With all the hurricane damage I just couldn't keep up with them all and had too many eggs to deal with. I ended up giving everything away to my sister in law. If I do get back into quails I won't do a tier system, just a single layer cage where poop goes on the ground outside for easier clean up. The max I would put in the tiered cages is 7 per tier. Anymore and you have to change it daily because the poop tray stays wet, even with alot of pine shavings and its a fly breeding ground. In all, the family really enjoyed them and it was well worth the effort.

So for the budget minded you can also buy 2x4s and cut them in half. They are the same price as a 2x2 furring strip (worth checking in your area). I suspect you could also do the math on larger lumber as well but I felt this was a good balance of time savings vs cost for me. Hope that helps bring this into the budget for someone else as well. Great video, I'll be working on the self watering system next!

Went to buy 2 x 2's and 1 x 2's today. Both Major big box stores did not have any 2 x 2's and the one store that had 1 x 2's looked like they were dragged down I-35 before they delivered them. So frustrating. Thanks for the detailed instructions. The changes I will be making are to have the back and front legs 2 inches difference so I can put a slanted roof on and paint the wood for outdoor use.

@renegadedouglas8927
@renegadedouglas8927 3 жыл бұрын
The quail cage came out awesome. The only thing I did different on the water system was put a shut off valve right after the bucket. That way of you have to do any repair on the cups you don't have to drain the whole bucket. You shut the vale then drain your lines only. The water remains in the bucket.

Hello, thank you so much for taking the time to explain how to build this excellent cage setup. I got all the wood I need to make this setup. I decided to pick up 2x4s and rip them to width instead of buying them individually; this saved me lots of money. I see that the bottom cage setup has a center bracing. I think you have 6 2x1s, but it needs 9 2x1s. Am I wrong, or did I not read it correctly. Once again, thank you so much; your knowledge is priceless.

I like this one a lot! Want to build one but mine will be outdoors so I will be using PT wood. Also, for a little added weight/stability I am considering using 2x4 for the legs. Do you think that's a good idea? We do have some high winds occasionally but I will be putting it in a protected area from the predominant winds. Thanks for what you do!

Used a similar build for my grow out cages, except I installed an insertable divider in the middle on each tier and had two horizontal opening doors instead. Once the birds in each tier are able to be sexed, the divider will go in and they can be separated by gender. This helps when I'm selling them or move onto culling them. The horizontal doors don't need another mechanism to keep them open and they can't block the other doors.
