Okay so here are a few helpful tips: When choosing an exercise for the greatest opportunity for growth you can: 1) choose one with the greatest opportunity to progressively overload it 2) choose one with the greatest range of motion 3) choose one that matches its resistance curves to your strength curve 4) choose one where the highest amount of tension can be applied in the muscle’s stretched/lengthened position. If you can find an exercises that allows for several of these at the same time, you have a recipe for “the best exercise”. While Hip Thrusts allow for a great loading potential, the range of motion is not the best. Sumo deadlift therefore would be on paper better because of both the loading potential and the range of motion. However, due to differing body mechanics, the sumo deadlift may he hard for some to feel their glutes activate. In this case, consider the Front Foot Elevated Split Squat. Using proper form and preferably Smith Machine, it may be the best of all worlds for the glutes.

I've been obese for 14 years since the birth of my first child. I have lost weight several times and always gained it back and more. I've always done the same thing, eat less... workout more. At some points I was doing two P90x workouts a day. I was always exhausted or injured. I tried keto and lost 25 pounds but the rage and hair loss wasn't worth it. The past few years I got into fasting and when it stopped working, I fasted more. I was fasting daily for 18/20 hours eating about 50 grams of protein a day. I've always been active and have been lifting weights regularly but I didn't realize I was doing "muscle cardio" until Sal said it. I've learned so much from you guys... in the past couple weeks I've stopped fasting, I'm eating as close to 150 grams of protein a day, I'm squatting, thrusting and deadlifting around 120 -135 for 3 sets of 6 and 8. I didn't even know I could lift that at almost 47 with two kids. Thank you guys so much for all the great info.... can't wait to see where I can go from here. I haven't felt excited or hopeful about my body in 15 years.

Hip thrusts 100% helped improve my deadlifts. Even though they’re a pain in the ass to setup when you’re doing like 150kg+ I still do them often because of this and how much my glutes became so strong a grew bigger

The reason there isn’t such a large variance in squat’s compared to hip thrusters is because the squat is a compound lift with so many more areas to cover up the weakness. It’s the simple compound vs. isolation argument. There is just as much variance in the glutes with either exercise but one can’t be covered up. Great show guys, Justin is the man!!

I loved this interview ❤️ I know that research is often biased or flawed. But your reputation for truth and integrity is well known. Making you a trust worthy trainer to follow. I truly appreciate that in a world of false information. Now here's something I didn't know. You don’t charge? OK so I'd really like to train BUT I'm not waning to train for a competition just for my personal benefits and health. Also I am 68, I weigh 123, I've been lifting weights for 16 years. I have a lot of questions on how to lift not only for improvement but also to maintain. I hope to hear your advice for an everyday person.

Glutes are a highly underrated muscle group for men. As a guy with bad leg genetics, you have to make sure all parts of the legs are hit, not just quads and calfs. Growing glutes / hamstrings made my legs look substantially bigger and compensates for my bad leg genetics. Plus girls love that shit

I actually listened to this while I trained my lower body, focusing on my booty. As a 46yr old woman, I found that I began to lose that perkiness as I got into Perimenopause. This interview actually reminded me to target by using different movements. I can’t do hip thrust on my bench (doesn’t feel good on my back)but I can do it on the floor with my feet elevated. Awesome interview. Thank you😊

I'm 68. I'm a IFBB pro. 2 lumbar back surgeries. I'm not allowed to squat or deadlift heavy anymore. I also felt like my glutes never responded well to squats or deadlifts like they have to hip thrusts. I'm old school bodybuilder. All my friends laughed at me when I started doing Brett's concepts. I bought his book and use it to make my programs, and do progressive overload. I train if hard! I've been doing this for a year now. My glutes don't look the same! I'm not quite 5' either. Gym equipment was not made with me in mind, but I modified everything I could. Brett's concepts were a game changer! I expect to be doing this in my 70's.. maybe longer!

Exactiy, the hip thrust movement already existed, the mechanics of it. He just took it to another level using the bar and bench. One thing I distrust about hip thrust it’s the pressure of the bar on your bladder. We don’t know the long term consequences because there’s no study vs squats where there’s a lot of studies done on the exercise, the good and the bad.

I know hip thrusts are popular and Brett is a great trainer and scientist, but I guess I'll be one of the few that don't care for hip thrusts that much. I think if you have a really good person coaching you on them and ensuring you're doing them correctly they're pretty good, but I think they're a bit tough to do correctly and to ensure your glutes solely are powering the movement. I much prefer lunges (reverse, walking); I get wayyyyy better results from them. Step-ups too I think are quite good. Squats as well but I think lunges are better than squats. But to each their own, that's the nice thing about it.
