Matt, after putting the stencil down with your choice of adhesive, put a coat of the background color on first. In this video it would have been black. That way the bleed through is the same color as your background. Let it dry and it will seal up any "gaps" between the stencil and the background. Then apply your over coat and it shouldnt bleed through since your gaps are full of the background color.

Thank you for sharing. A police officer in my town got shot in the head a few days ago and it was all over the news. I believe she is still alive but on a ventilator. My family owns a small bar/restaurant and next weekend we’re having an auction and all the money is going to her family to help in any way it can. This lady has been into our restaurant before when off duty so I’m going to build an ice chest for drinks and the top of the lid is going to be this flag. I’ve built an ice chest before and it turned out really well. It was actually my first project I had ever done. Hopefully this next one that I’ll make with the blue line flag on it will sell for a good price at the auction to help her family. Thank you again for this tutorial

To do my stars I learned that my favorite way is to get a cheap roll of tac paper from Dollar Tree and by using the Crikut, cut out all my stars and carefully lay it on the union. I can then dab paint it or spray it. , carefully peel of the stencil and throw it away. It's the cheapest and easiest way I've found and I nearly never get any bleed over.

I’m just seeing this so I’m two years behind, but if you put painters tape over your field, then you could tape you stencil over that and cut out your stars with an exact o knife. Then when you paint you want get the over spay. It might be more work but you might get a better product.

Just a couple questions & ideas. When you use the Elmers Craft Bond, once you set the stencil do you apply several light coats or just one decent coat and how long did you let the stencil stay on the project. Although I went with you directions on the glue up, the next one I think I’m going to do biscuit joints on the stripes and on the bottom section of the Union. I had a left over piece of 1x12 that was perfect for the union. This eliminated the two 1x6 and hopefully eliminates the bleed over. Really enjoy the site, keep up the great work.
@731Woodworks
@731Woodworks 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Biscuits would be a better choice. I used 1 light coat of craft bond. I have changed the way I do my flags since this video. For the union I use a piece of 3/4 inch sanded birch plywood. That way it is one solid piece and easier to stencil. For the stencil, I now use my own stencils that stick on, see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGHXoqN_d7OEis0

So, I pose this question to all those that think this is defacing OUR Flag; What do color blind people see? Do they see a defaced flag, or do they see the American Flag & know immediately what it is & what it represents? I was fortunate to have served in the Marine Corps during a time of peace, and I hold ALL who have served, past, present & future in the highest regards. I personally feel this is a fantastic way to honor those that have served, do serve, or will serve OUR country and it's citizens, domestic and abroad. Why shouldn't OUR Flag show a little uniqueness as WE are ALL unique ourselves. Keep up the great work! Semper Fi.

Great job. You are good at stenciling. When I made a Betsy Ross Flag for my nephew, I used a 4" foam roller. I poured some paint into a a 4" roller pan. Wet the foam roller with the paint. Try to get out as much paint off your brush by roller it on the flat part of the pan. After that roll the brush lightly onto some newspaper or paper towels to absorb most of the paint, then roll over the stars, ensuring the stencil is as flat as possible. I did a coffee table with individual stencils and used a pouncer brush, following the same procedure. The trick is not to have too much paint on the roller or brush. Keep up the great work.

Good instructional video. I do have to say though that you have some time efficiency issues due to your work flow, like during the clamp up... if you had the Union ready when you clamped the stripes up you could just put everything in the proper order face down, clamp it together and then nail in the support rails while it is drying up. Something else you could do, but requires a few six inch clamps, is get six 2 x 4 segments, wrapped in plastic wrap to prevent damage to the paint or stained surface, and clamp them from top to bottom at even intervals across the flag (front and back). This will help keep the stripes flush. just some suggestions.

Police have a hard job I get it..... but its no where near what the colonist went through fighting the revolutionary war. Absolutely no where!! If they want to make there own flag.. that's fine but don't compare yourself to the hero's of the American Revolution. I kind of think its somewhere along the lines of stolen valor.

Having trouble with the white paint bleeding under my stencil, what do you use to stop that
@731Woodworks
@731Woodworks 6 жыл бұрын
It’s very hard to stop it. I haven’t perfected it either. What I do is tape the edges of the stencil down so it doesn’t move. Then with a gloved hand, put a finger on each side of a star. Spray that star. Then move to the next. Repeat until done. It sure helps the overspray significantly but doesn’t completely stop it.

@731Woodworks
@731Woodworks 5 жыл бұрын
@@bobbyjordan7927 Spray it on the stencil and let it set for about 5 minutes before putting the stencil on the wood. However, I have found this method, while helping with bleed, causes sticky residue to be left on the wood that you have to clean off later. What I have found that works best (but still not perfect) is with a gloved hand, applying pressure on 2 sides of the star you are painting, spraying, then moving to the next star until complete. This seems to work best for me. However, I have recently bought a Cricut machine (vinyl cutting machine)and can make my own stick on stencils. The stick on stencil works best. It gives a good seal and produces no bleed. I have thought about selling them on my Etsy store for these flag projects.

To the people who want to complain about flags with the black stripes and union field, along with various colored stripes under the union field, which are designed to pay respect to fallen firefighters, paramedics, police officers, dispatchers, and all of the different branches of the military, let me ask you this. When you see someone hanging the red, white and blue upside down (legally a sign of national distress) in protest of politics (seriously????), or burning the flag (yes, there is a proper and legal way that this is allowed), walking on or even urinating on that flag...........do you complain about that too??? Or are you the type who expects everyone to follow your thoughts and beliefs without having any of their own??? I have seen someone wrap a statue of Jesus in the American Flag (red, white and blue), place it in a large clear glass jar, fill it with urine, and call it art. Some people called the police to report it, and they were told it was the artist's First Amendment Right. Why should that be called art while what is shown in this video not be called art??? Just remember, the people you are complaining about are often the ones who served in our military defending your right to free speech (among other Constitutional Rights). Well guess what............they also defended every American's rights too, and some of them even died protecting ALL of OUR rights and freedoms. And maybe one day, one of them will be called upon to save your life, or your Mother's or child's life. Will you complain then??? Am I saying that everyone is perfect??? Hell no. There was only one man who walked this earth who was perfect, He was often called a witch, and was eventually nailed to a cross. Why??? Because there were people who simply did not agree with His way of life, and felt threatened by Him. There is good and bad in every walk of life on this planet, and I personally believe that the good far outweighs the bad in every one of them.

I think the reason why this video is getting the response it’s getting is because the blue line flag was created in response to the BLM movement. Yes it does show support for our police men and women, but the reason it was created was to show opposition to BLM. If it would have been created before BLM and used to show support for police men and women prior, then maybe it wouldn’t strike such a nerve.
