You could have got a strut spring off the car you got the rotors off of and used it to tension the ball. Run a bar through the spring to one of the legs. When you want to release the ball just step down on the rod. Release the rod and tension is reapplied. Or not. What you did works great. Enjoyed the video.

Love the ViceGripsGarage hat👍🏻! Saw y’all at Norwalk but didn’t bother you, y’all were busy trying to get the GTO going again! Just built a 4’x 8’x 3/4” welding table with 4”- .5” wall square tube legs on industrial U-Line casters... works great and after adding linear supports for the legs the bastard will hold over a thousand pounds with no flex and it is at 44” working height!

Tips for anyone else building thisPut some antiseize between the steel and aluminum if you ever wanna change the top plate, and could cap the leg ends and fill them with sand or some old coolant if its too top heavy Also the top plate should really be 1/2" thick atleast but i mean use whats free or cheap

Curiosity: did you consider using an old suspension coil spring or something and just adjust the preload on it? Maybe even an overcenter linkage that drops the preload? Seems like the bottle jack is a little clunky when a spring would work. And the ability to set friction and just move the table as needed would be slick. LOVE the build! Genius!

Just a suggestion for you to try....When using your spool gun to weld aluminum, push your weld instead of pulling it. I've found it works much better for me. Keeps spatter from sticking to the bead, bead lays flatter, and just ends up looking better. Different strokes for different folks, but it's worth trying.

You should consider using E6010 rod. It works much better for penetrating rusty corroded materials. And for things like brake rotors which are extremely hard it will help penetrate. 6010 rod is a little harder to use but is a better rod for some applications.

This is BRILLIANT. I really want to get into welding, but not sure where to start. AVE recommends learning stick first, but not sure if I should go with a Harbor Freight welder or something like the Lincoln Electric to start with. Any ideas? Would love more welding/beginner content!

There are lots of sites dedicated to welding. This is one guy I watch (Jody) and he has a pile of videos on different processes mig, tig, stick. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3zVqKCBbMmZY9U He has reviewed different makes of machines as well in some videos (some offshore ones too). Start there would be my suggestion. Lincoln, Miller, Hobart, ESAB

don't buy a cheap welder from harbor freight their junk welders a good welder for a cheap price is Arccaptian MIg 200 its a excellent welder for newbies its a good welder for experienced welders like myself I've been a welder for over thirty yrs this welder is a multi purpose welder and it can weld stick, mig, tig, and aluminum and do spot welds as well Years ago to have a weld with al these functions would cost 3 to 4 thousand dollars this thing is 400 Canadian Thats crazy if you want to weld aluminum you have to buy the spoil gun but its only $150 bucks. You can't go wrong with these welders for the price.

Hey Deboss, I found a space shuttle out behind the barn... its cool as hell, think you could hook me up with a custom tow bar???/LOL. Damn man even the catchphrase is different and I like it. I know that you could make a time machine out of bed frames and a subaru car body if they gave you twenty minutes to find the material behind your new shop. You flat impress me with the ingenuity and intrusive thinking cap on. I wish we had met when I was your age.. I'm only 72 now and so if I start hitchhiking south from alaska, I should make it there in time for my funeral but if you say something nice, thats it just "something nice" and I'll meet Bob,you know, your uncle. I just think that life has shuffled the cards bad for you after the way they led you on about the tape measure patient. You and Gates could play a round of golf or something rich people do. I guess I should be glad you didn't get rich cause your still making youtube videos. Your one nice person and I hope that you never change cause they don't make many like you

I used to think 110v welders were useless and had no purpose in this world. Then I stated doing exhaust work with one, then I had to do exhaust without one. For that kind of work, those little welders are king.

I’ve got a spool gun with Argon on my miller 212, it works well, but you have to push, not pull. You want the Argon out in front. move quicker than steel, and get the Argon pressure set just right. Too low and it doesn’t cover the weld, too high and it cools it too quick. Definitely a learning curve.

Random question for you, since we both work on rusty Canadian junk, what blades do you use to cut springs out of trucks? I'm trying to save them out of a parts truck as kid I'm fixing for is on a really limited budget. Usually i just separate the clamps holding the stack together and drop them in underneath, not an option either, as his springs are twisted.

I am curious as to what you are wearing on your head at the 15:35 mark in the video. Can you explain what that is and why you chose to wear it? Great table idea! My only change to it would be the ground connection as a solid attachment to the aluminum plate instead of the nut but that does work.

Welding cast iron rotors to steel it makes for a brittle weld and I'd be worried about one or two of the welds pulling out of the cast iron when the jack gets over tightened . Got to use high nickel welding rod , pretty heat it really good , and when you done welding peen the weld with the chipping hammer , then rap in insulation and let cool slowly . Kool table genius design 😎👍

Keeping with the sports theme, i wondered if the entire jack/locking mechanism could be replaced with a weight lifting bar with a course thread? By welding a handle to the locking nut, would there be enough lift in the 110⁰ of throw you might get between two of the three legs to pinch the ball tight? Just putting the thought out there...
