I know they're the poster boys for 40k, but ultramarines just do the range game so well. Being able to change a unit to tactical doctrine for extra range/so, being able to deny a unit being tied up in close combat if I don't want it and still able to shoot, strat for my devs to always be in their doctrine. The flexibility they have was the draw for me.

Which strat you mean? Squad Doctrine for 1 CP (for chooses doctrine I guess. Every Space Marine chapter has strat for all doctines active on one unit if I am correct (Adaptive Strategy for 2 CP). But most chapters have strategem for 1 doctrine, one they are best in.
