Using 2x4's you should use 3 4x4's for skids underneath. It will be much stronger. You should also use pressure treated wood as well. The floor will get a lot of moister on it and it will rot out.

Chap makes it clear at the start that this is a brief run through and a more in depth video is on his website. That said, this remains a very comprehensive and detailed description. Enough so that it almost puts me off attempting it at all. Kinda hoped it would be a lot easier :(

That is good if it has put you off building a shed. It is too big of a project for many people. That is the advantage of doing this kind of research before you get started.

the first gable with the sheets on was kinda heavy for me to pick up, so I built the rest of the walls with out the sheeting. I mostly work by myself so it was easier for me that way. My shed is 10 x 12 and so far is coming out very well.

What siding did you use? All 4'x8' siding I've researched, such as LP super siding 36 or78, specifically state installation needs to be on framing 16" on center if not using a sub material like OSB. Buckling will occur when 24" on center.

Oh wow! I have seen many videos on youtube explaining how to make a shed. The technique you used to create the door is pure genius! Just a quick question here. On other videos it says to make sure the foundation blocks line up with the edge of the shed. Here this is not the case. Is there any benefit doing it this way? Also if I were to have the door on the longer side and one window on the short side would the foundation need changed in any way?
@CheapShedsDotCom8 жыл бұрын
Lining the blocks up with the edge of the shed is just for looks. Where you put the blocks will depend on how you space the skids. And where you put the door and window has no effect on the foundation as long as it's build sturdy and firm.

Where I live anything on a poured concrete slab is considered a permanent structure and is taxable. So my only options for a base are wood or pavers and pavers are kind of a pain in the butt. Also when using a wood base don't forget your vapor barrier between the plywood and frame.

I’m building an 8x12 and have a load of beautiful 12 ft 2x6 pressure treated. Can I lay them the long way so I don’t cut up great 12 footers and how would that modify the perimeter joists and doubling up??? I have concrete block to support lengthwise
@CheapShedsDotCom4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. It doesn't matter if you make your floor 8x12 or 12x8. The only difference is you will need shorter (8ft) and more skids (total of 3) when you run the (12ft) joists in the different direction. No need to double up on the perimeter joists.

If your skids need to be spliced just put a block or other support under the joint to carry the weight. Don't worry about securing them together. Or you can buy 2x4's and sandwich them together by offsetting the joint 3 to 4 ft.

When its fully complete, what would be a rough estimate of the total cost of materials?
@eileenloves48024 жыл бұрын
There would be no way to give an accurate estimate at what this would cost each person to build. He could share how much it cost him to build one, but it could end up being a very different price for you. I have worked at home depot in tennesse now for a year and I have seen 2x4's go for as little as $3 or up to over $6 and a sheet of 1/2 inch OSB go for $6 to $12 all depending on the time of year and supply. Lumber seems to be cheaper in the late spring and summer time. I imagine this goes for all big box stores. You may find cheaper prices at a local mill yard if you have access to one though.

Hello, is the concrete slab built on top of a bed of gravel? Thanks.
@CheapShedsDotCom10 жыл бұрын
A concrete slab will be built directly on the ground. Dig down about 6 inches around the edges to make them thicker, then fill and raise the middle about 2 inches and pour your slab about 4 inches thick. This will make it about 6 inches off the ground to allow for water to run around it, and allow 4 to 5 inches of wood to earth gap with 1 inch siding overhang.
@lduranceau804610 жыл бұрын
CheapShedsDotCom That's ok for places like Florida. But I live in Montreal Canada, where the winter temperatures sometime reach -40 below zero Celsius. I don't believe that the concrete slab can be built directly over the ground for this reason. quite simply, the ground under the concrete slab gets so frozen that the slab will eventually crack. This is why a layer of about 6" of compacted gravel is necessary UNDER the concrete slab. And that's not all. Rebarb is needed in the concrete slab as well. Extreme cold causes very bad things to happen.....

Why not extend trusses out over the sides walls to support the "overhang" you create with the roof sheathing? Any "support" you get from the trim is minimal at best and over time I see the edges of that roof failing. Furthermore, by not framing that roof with the overhanging trusses you've eliminated any means of cross ventilation.
@CheapShedsDotCom9 жыл бұрын
Mark F.This shed is meant to be as simple as possible. My other shed 3 plans offer up to 12 inches of overhang. In reality the roof sheeting can overhang several inches without failing. This is based on hundreds of actual sheds I've built over the last 25 years.

what is the roof pitch/slope on your sheds?

The regular shed plans offer 3:12, 4:12, and 5:12 pitches. The Deluxe plans offer 6:12 and 12:12 pitches.
@REVerbtalk5 жыл бұрын
Just look at your roof line of your home and you can determine pitch with simple measurements or your square... From there, you can go the same or lower on your shed to transfer the stylistics.... This is probably a 4-12 and I've seen 2-12's

@CheapShedsDotCom5 жыл бұрын
you can find a cost estimate on my website at www.cheapsheds.com.
@REVerbtalk5 жыл бұрын
That's totally dependent on your build but for the basic simple cheapy weepy setup... 96 sq ft Roughly 32 boards and account for the roof and waste so I'm sticking it at 48. I hoard studs hahaha. Prices based on Home depot (48) 2 x 4 = $85.92 THREE(3) 4 x 4 x 8 = $9.00 Plywood for the rood: $66.00 Construction Screws(Exterior): $26.00 ... Don't use drywall screws, I can swear those are drywall screws he was using on this video excluding the roof Plywood w/ Siding Design. $60.00 Concrete plates and foundation setup: $50.00(Aimmed a little high, I use a different setup) Misc lag bots and materials for the roof: $96.00 I forgot to add the floor plywood so just attach 3 more and it's $27.00 Total Project Cost Estimate: $419.92. These typically cost around that for the size and it's a matter of how designed you want to take it. Some 1x6's and maybe a build out for Soffit and fascia, hardware for the doors, extra material for the lower parts to cover the ground for your cats to rest under LOL.
