For me, the ideas in kzbin.infoUgkxy_pn55PK60wAV3X_C_RoLS_67mNonoCE Plans were a starting point for building different sheds . Ryan gives ideas that allow an individual to draw nicest conclusions into the design and building of his or her own shed.

There are many ways to rough frame walls. You could even build the walls on the shed deck, use the sheathing to square the walls, and nail the sheathing on. If the deck is square, and level then the walls will be plumb. Tack the steathing on if you have concerns but hell it's just a shed. I've designed and built a couple of sheds. I even built a pentagonal tree house, assembled the wall, and roof panels on my driveway, hoisted them up, and nailed them in place.

Do you have any tricks for preassembling each wall including siding so they all you need to do is stand the walls upright, nail them to the floor and nail the cornets together? I currently have a 4 x 10 foot lean to that abuts next to a fence and then two of the other sides are bordered bty climbing rose bushes I don't want to harm. I can't assemble and move into place as I did the original aluminum shed as there is now a gated entrance into my side yard vehind which the shed resides. As I have a small back yard that is beautifully landscaped, I want to build a new shed with shingled siding on the same foot print but with taller walls and gabled roof as I need to increase my storage. I also want to add a small rolling library ladder accessed loft area at the back end.

Is there something to add to the bottom of the siding so that the siding doesn't rot out or get wrecked over time? I am replacing siding now and the old one seemed to get brittle and almost rotted near the bottom.

If you set your rafters flush with the wall sheathing than you can cut your Gable siding to overhang the wall siding by 2 inches and than you won't need z flashing.

do you need to use a osb sheating before putting on this panel. geting conflicting inputs, some people say if you dont put osb sheating the panel will warp over time., I also live in AZ, any feed back will be helpful
@wizzlet6821
@wizzlet6821 3 жыл бұрын
He's probably on a budget. My understanding is that normally you do wall sheathing (osb) for structure stability, cover it in a vapor retardant (not vapor barrier) to protect that osb from rot and warping, then a siding over that in order to keep it from looking like crap and to add another protective layer. Looks like this guy just used siding as his sheathing...again, probably with the mindset of budgeting and "it's just a shed." So he's probably not worried about having to do more maintenance than normal. I'm no expert, it's just what it seems like. But the siding here is probably performing the same structural role as the osb sheathing would....its just way more prone to damage, exposed as it is. I'm more of a "quality to prevent a headache later" person, personally..rather than take shortcuts just cuz it's a shed...but it's really up to the shed owner what they want or how much they can spend

Jd Orion Great question. The walls for this shed are framed to 6'-6" which fixes that problem. It uses a home built door. The walls will actually be 8'-1" if you use 92 5/8" studs. Many of our larger sheds use 7'-7" wall heights which allows the use of a pre-hung door with a 2x6 header and still allow the single piece of siding to be used from the top plate to below the floor sheeting.
@leebannister3759

If you have truely an 8 ft wall, then creating drip edge is super important. You could look at trimming out the base with some 1x4 or a drip edge.

That's not plywood it's osb which isn't made for outside use , to use it you would have to house wrap it and go over it with siding . The way you built it you would have been better off with t111 pressure treated siding 5/8th or 3/4 in thickness so you can just nail it up and go.
@icreatablestv
@icreatablestv 6 жыл бұрын
The siding we used is made by Louisiana Pacific. It is an O.S.B. type material but is much more dense and uses a higher quality glue. It is designed for exterior use. The floor and roof sheeting are built with traditional O.S.B. and are protected.
@sweettoadslovei

I know what that is :-), its the LP Siding sold by Lowes, it's called Knotty Pine, it's actually not an OSB type, it's and MDF type material, and yes it is an exterior product. I know so some much about it because I have 12 sheets in my garage and I'm preparing to sheath my shed with it. On that note, the panels are 4x8, yet it looks like you have a larger sheet on the door opening side, since it looks like you used full sheets on the sides. what the scoop there? Great videos by the way!

So, I wish you had spent a little more time talking about the types of siding. I bought the cheaper siding at Lowe's yesterday, and it appears that is the same type you are using. But my concern is that appears to be a "press board" or MDF style board that will not keep out moisture and rather could soak it up and expand over time. I went to the manufacturer site and there are a lot of warnings there about it needing to be used OVER sheathing, with moisture barrier, or kept away from moisture, which really has me worried. I think I will return it and instead go for a higher quality, pre-primed T1-11 board that has more thickness, strength, and moisture resistance. I want to be inexpensive, but these boards you used seem a bit too "cheap" and won't provide a very long lasting solution. Or am I wrong? I'm a newbie to this stuff, so feel free to enlighten me if you are willing. I appreciate it.
@icreatablestv
@icreatablestv 8 жыл бұрын
+Kendon Smith You are correct. MDF does soak up moisture more easily than plywood T1-11. But if the edges are painted so they are sealed and you use a good paint on any edge that is exposed to moisture the MDF sidings will last a very long time. Also, if you live in a high humidity area I would recommend using T1-11.
@leebannister3759

I thought the same thing, so I am going to paint the outside and then paint the ends, and then probably going to paint/spray the inside a white. Sealing it will help it last.

@drewratterman6342
@drewratterman6342 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a fairly ignorant statement. First off….. it’s a shed. Second strength comes from any paneling tying the wall together which helps with resisting racking in walls. Shit even drywall does that though not as good as wood sheathing. OSB is horrible when exposed to water it swells and rots bad, you wanna rip a guy you should have said plywood, and that paneling is probably pressure treated and/or coated in a water resistant finish. Haven’t seen how he’s doing the roof but l I’ll assume the soffit at the overhang would create rain proof joint eliminating any moisture getting behind the panel. No need to rip on a guy trying to help people especially when it turns out you know no better. SMH
