I watched your video, went and bought a cattle panel, posts and post pusher. Husband came home, put it up and we love it. Just need to put up more. We decided to make extra gardens by the street this year and offer free tomatoes and maybe cucumbers. We'll have our own in the back gardens. I had an herb/flower/vegetable/floral design business for 20 years and closed it some years back. Now in old age, we are 71 and 80 (still healthy and vigorous) we have decided to start growing again and also sharing with passersby. I think kind gestures are a way of connecting and giving back after what our world has been through this winter/spring. Happy growing everyone. Thank you Roots and Refuge for the great videos. Write that book! Update 3/7/22. I lost my prince last August at 82. He is sorely missed but would want me to keep doing everything we loved together. I'm now 73, getting ready to garden in the spring, painting and writing and learning to produce videos!

Great video. But I use a long auger bit on my drill to drill the holes into the ground for the t posts. A 12 inch hole for the T post takes about 20 minutes including scooping up the loosened soil. I'm a 67 year old woman with back problems so a heavy T Post driver is out of the question. Letting the drill do all the work saves my back, neck and shoulders.
@RootsandRefugeFarm
@RootsandRefugeFarm 6 жыл бұрын
The t-post driver is really hard for me, especially in the raised beds. I don't have the strength to bring it down hard enough when its up above my shoulders like that. Thats a great tip about the drill. I'll keep that in mind if ever I don't have a helping hand around!

Sandy James, what a wonderful idea! I’m a 65 yr old gardener suffering from a degenerative neuro-muscular disease and can’t even pick up the post hole driver 😡 but I’ve no doubt I can handle a drill with auger bit. Thanks.

Glad to help. I have dry, hard dirt so I had to wet the soil first to make it much easier. I had to wet the ground and let it soak in, drill, remove excess dirt, wet again and repeat until you have a 12 inch hole, which is the recommended depth for a 6 ft t post.

Lol! What class of zip Ties?! Look for the ones that are UV-resistant, IF you want them to last more than a couple to few years in weather....especially if exposed to sun. They get brittle. The UV-resistant zip ties are harder to find in the numerous zip tie displays at big box hardware stores, and those do last several years more when exposed to weather. Love the cattle panel arches!

Oh my goodness guys. Your videos are so charming and enjoyable!! Thank you for doing this video because my daughter has been wanting to plant grapes but I felt so overwhelmed with the idea of building one of these for them to grow. This makes it so much more relatable and doable. I cannot wait to do it on my yard!!

What a wonderful idea & thank you for all the info. Now I know what to do down the side of my house. We'd planned some raised garden beds down one side next to the pathway. I'll erect arches all the way down. It's lovely & sunny along there. I'll find a way to secure the arch to the path side by the house. Many best wishes & greetings from South Australia. 😃❤🖐🇦🇺

Thanks for the great idea I got the Trellis built out following your suggestions and it came out very well. I used a 15' Uhaul truck to carry the cattle panels and T-posts from Tractor Supply Co. I used just the regular hammer to push in the T-posts. And it was very easy to install the trellis arches then. Once set up it looks amazing and encouraging to make the best use of the Trellis. Zip Ties I bought from the electrical section of Home Depot were breaking in pieces. If any one has better suggestion, i would further strengthen them.

Hi Elise, have you found panels to use? I'm in the ACT and I'm struggling to find what to use for this. When I Google cattle panels here I get short rigid sections of fencing which wouldn't be appropriate. I'd be grateful to know what you're using! :)

Thank you. I am watching from Franklinton, North Carolina - Zone7B. I use my cedar trellis for growing vines(grapes). I grew cherry tomatoes this way this year. They went wild. I picked my last tomatoes in mid-November. I am making cattle fencing for my Thorn less black berries for next year. I always have my trellises multi-task for me in my garden - multiple vining flowers to produce. I want to try those small melons next year.

You should plant a few vining flowers. Cardinal climber, morning glories would be lovely and attract pollinators. If you might need more headroom, I don't really think you need to have the grid all the way at the bottom, and could probably prop it up by a few inches on each side.

Look at rolled wire fencing. It's basically wire that's welded into a rectangle pattern. I got a roll from Lowe's with smaller rectangles (basically hardware cloth) and fixed it into a big cylinder for composting my yard waste. (I have just under a quarter acre--livin in the suburbs!) and it works great. Very easy to turn the compost, since I just knock the cylinder over and re-fork everything back in. It even came with extra wire that I could use instead of zip ties to hold it together. For this arch project, I'm thinking about getting the same thing (but with bigger rectangles) and putting more supports than she did. It looks like what she's using is a lot sturdier (thicker gauge wire).
@occipitalneuralgia2339
@occipitalneuralgia2339 6 жыл бұрын
polkadottedpolak yes, I thought about the easy to buy roll of wire fencing, but it’s not as strong. I think it would do for some plants, but it could not be loaded up with heavy plants. I like you idea for composting bins. I am currently using garbage cans, but it’s not aerated enough, even though I drilled holes all over the cans. Your way, the worms can survive the winters too.
@Chimonger1

Yes, there are a few names for them in various regions...Farm panels, utility panels, etc..., but if you describe them as “about 16’ to 20’ long and about 5’ wide, mesh panels”...the clerks usually find them. Cattle panels are MUCH heavier gauge wire than wire fencing that comes in rolls...I’d guess that cattle panel wire is about double or more, the thickness (gauge) as the wire used for rolls of wire fencing. The panels can fairly well stand alone and keep their shape, if propped up at each end...wire fencing cannot hold its shape like that.

Lets say you want to get someone through an Archway driving a Rider Mower, a REAL Situation because you may want to maintain your pathway. How Wide is your Rider Mower? Add a 10% margin of error. How tall is your Rider when he is mounted on his Rider Mower? Add a 10% margin of error. How do I get this to work on my 16 foot Cattle Panel? You now have a nice Math Problem. Hope someone in your Family passed their Algebra Class.

Price depends on the mesh size, so panels with smaller holes cost more bc more material goes into them. Still, $60!! Maybe they quoted you for pipe panels such as for a corral.

Zip ties will eventually get brittle and break off. I know from experience. I would just maybe use wire. I love your garden

Beautiful garden 😍 Can I ask why you plant on the inside of the panels? How does the panel hold the weight of the plant? Do you just thread the plant through to the otherside of the panel? Thank you

I’m so excited that I found your videos! What was that piece that your husband used to jam the trellis into the ground? That tool looks so much easier to use than what I’ve been doing for stuff

Hello, I am new to the raised bed gardening concept. I love the arched trellis look but I have a question about raised garden beds. How do you turn the earth in a raised garden bed? I mean from the ground I have always had to use a rototiller to prepare the earth, what do you do when its a raised garden bed?
