Another option to look into would be a generator you can run on wood gas. There's loads of stuff you can do to limit sound. Also it would be fairly simple to rig up a basic hot water system from the secondary heat of the system producing the wood gas

One of the great benefits of GMRS radio is that only one person in a family unit needs to get the license. A single license covers your whole household and all of your cousins and uncles and aunts and grandparents and children even if they aren't living at your address. That combined with higher power limits and the ability to install larger antennas without having to get your whole household trained on ham radio just makes it an obvious winner if you are having to communicate within 15 mi or so
@BigBlue1026

GMRS is going to be the CB radio of this century. Of course in emergency situations, license or not, anyone is allowed to use ham radios. Those emergency exceptions are limited to life threatening or loss of property.

Biggest problem with long term blackout is you giving away where you are via a light source of any type. When its dark you operate by natural light or none at all. A light is death. Using a light in your house or out makes you a target visible at great distances. You need to totally black out your windows in a lit area. Even then go very dim.
@techmarine83

@@boblatkey7160 No he's not. What he's saying is that in a long term blackout situation it's the "have nots" that are a real problem. If it's been weeks into a blackout and your house is the only one with lights aka power then you become a target for people looking for food and other materials...and your power system.

Here in LA many of us of learned unofficially that once EVs become mandatory that there'll be many times when there'll be brown outs and even black outs because the grid won't be able to charge the EVs and keep the lights on at the same time. Considering parts of the state already have brown outs on a regular basis this isn't surprising.

Solar pathway lights are an inexpensive option that provide decent lighting with 6 LEDs per disk and are rechargeable. This helps conserve other batteries for radios etc. while being very portable and eliminating a fire hazard. Sam's club has them in a box of 5 for $20.

Indeed, my Mrs bought some as she wanted to "pretty up" the garden (yard). I swapped out the cheap rechargable batteries that came with them for better quality ones to last longer. I look at everything she buys for a secondary prepping use, she thinks I am nuts, but she will learn quickly, the hard way if the power goes out.

Prior to worry about EMP or CME (that one you would get a heads up usually) stuff was easy to just leave all over the place. Now you have to protect stuff, a bit of a pain. Not hard, just have to stash stuff away all of the time. But worth it if it were to happen. Add the Ecoflow AC/heater and you will be a happy camper. Even if that camping is a single room in your house.

You can get an aluminum box, like people use to cover in wall Air Conditioners from the outside in the winter. The companies that build them will build them to any size. get one to fit/ completely cover you generator with some space so it doesn't touch the box, cover the seams with metal tape, coat the inside of the Metal Box with rubberized coating like Flex seal, buy the liquid rubber in a can and paint the inside of the Box several times and it should be fine to protect your Generator.

You have great videos, JR. A couple of things I'd like to add: 1. Avoid Duracell alkaline cells, as there are a lot of reports of them leaking and 2. The tool company battery-operated fans are way more powerful than most of the ones from other companies. They also leverage any existing batteries/chargers you have from your existing cordless tools. the Dewalt, Milwaukee and the Milwaukee fans are very good.

In the unfortunate event of a prolonged power outage, the absence of internet and television may pose a significant challenge to you and your family. Even your trusty smartphone may be of little use. As such, it is essential to consider alternative forms of entertainment and engagement. To this end, I suggest stocking up on puzzle, activity and coloring books, art supplies, and jigsaw puzzles. These items will provide a fun and engaging way to pass the time and keep your mind active during the blackout.

Thanks to your videos, I'm now in the process of setting up a mobile GMRS radio as a base station. I'm just waiting on some parts for building the antenna mast and grounding it. I can use the radio off of a ac 30 amp power supply, but if power does go out I can also plug it into one of my EcoFlow battery generators and run it off the DC cigarette lighter outlet. I also just yesterday passed my FCC technician license exam. I bought a pair of Baofeng UV-5R handheld dual band ham radios just for SHTF situations. Prepare, practice, persevere and pray!

Would it be beneficial to do the trash can faraday cages, the aluminum foil wrapping, etc. and then keep these items in a metal shed lined with cardboard? I have been thinking of doing this but putting a small metal garden shed in one corner of my double car garage to hold these items.
@diypreppertv

I don't know if the shed would provide much additional protection since they tend to have some large gaps where the sides connect to the roof and floor. I would also be worried about temperature fluctuations. Batteries don't tend to do well in extremely high or low temperatures.

Our household has solar charging camp lanterns (stored inside EMP pulse-resistant bags), jar candles and butane lighters. We also have a motorhome parked in our yard. It has two rooftop solar panels and large capacity batteries to power its interior and exterior lighting, TV sets, DVD player and music CD player. No idea how resistant its electronics would be to an EMP, if the motorhome is not plugged into a power outlet and is therefore not connected to the power grid. There seems to be a difference of opinion on this subject among the scientists who study EMP and CME. The motorhome also has a filled propane tank to operate the onboard refrigerator and stove top and a full diesel tank to power the onboard generator to run the AC unit and the on-demand water heater for the shower stall -- all these are controlled by electronic circuitry so, again, no idea of how resistant all this could be to damage by an EMP or CME. Our household can easily cope with six months without electric lights. But if the power outage occurs during the summer here in southern Nevada so that our home's AC units stop working, we will only be able to run the motorhome's AC units for a couple of nights (assuming their circuitry has not been damaged by an EMP/CME) before we have to travel to a cooler location. If the power outage occurs during the cool winter months, we can stay put for months and use our food storage and grid down cooking methods so long as we have enough drinking water. There have not been freezing temperatures at night in our location for the past three winters, so no worries about severe cold here. If the local water supply runs dry and we use up the water in our 55-gallon barrels, we will have to travel to a location with drinking water. Our closest large bodies of water are Lake Mead and the Colorado River. We have the ability to purify ground water, so could try to camp near a freshwater lake or river along with everyone else who can manage to travel there. I hope our household NEVER has to find out whether our motorhome can survive an EMP/CME.

I've had to survive weeks without electricity after a hurricane, the national guard only supplied water after a day or two without. People are fat and happy and just do not know how to survive a lights out situation. No water, no food, no lights, no joy.

Do you need to use specifically panels from Ecoflow to charge their Ecoflow solar generators/power stations? I know some of the systems require their proprietary panels and connections for everything. Thanks!

Could you cover what kind of protection is needed for a Carrington Event? We are due for another one, and I don't believe our fragile grid will survive. Thank you for all your help.
@justincase1152
@justincase1152 Жыл бұрын
A Carrington event was caused by a solar flamre, same concept as an emp. Anything that is electonic, even solar panels have electronic equipment so all electronics are susceptible. Cars, radios, cell phones, tele isions, if it plugs in or has batteries, it will be damaged. It should be in a Faraday cage. Some thoughts are a microwave wouk serve as one but I am not sold on that. Hope this helps

How has the Ecoflow been working for you? Do you use it often like for camping or do you just have it in case of power outage?
@diypreppertv
@diypreppertv Жыл бұрын
Hello Paul! I have used them for both. The larger ones work well for emergency power while I prefer the smaller ones for camping. The larger ones can also run power tools if you need to build something in a remote location, like a deer stand.

I'm on 24 hrs Oxygen, because of long covid so I have to have power. Which Echoflow should I get to sustain power for my concentrator and which panels matches it? Do you know if they have a discount voucher that they give to disabled people? Thank you for your show. It's so informative. Kate
@diypreppertv
@diypreppertv Жыл бұрын
Hello Kate! I'm not too familiar with oxygen concentrators, but it looks like they use quite a bit of electricity. If it uses around 500 watts, you may not get 2 hours with a Delta 2 by itself. Something like a Delta Max with an extra battery or a Delta Pro may be the way to go. Once again, I'm not really familiar with oxygen concentrators, so I don't have a good idea of how long a power station would keep one running under real-world conditions. Do you know how many watts yours uses?
@Kates_Koffee
@Kates_Koffee Жыл бұрын
@diypreppertv Yes its about 400 Watts.

Is a 100W solar panel enough to charge and run an Ecoflow power station or is it better to have 2 solar panels? And is the Ecoflow easily compatible with other brand of solar panels? I ask this second question because I have a sort of diy system setup that I really don't like, so if I just straight up buy a power station I'd like to be able to at least continue to be able to use my 100W solar panel, that way what I've already got isn't a total loss.
@diypreppertv
@diypreppertv Жыл бұрын
How much solar input a power station can handle depends on the specific device. Smaller ones, like the River 2 won’t need or be able to handle anywhere near the max input of something like the Delta 2 Max. I believe that you can connect panels from other manufacturers to Ecoflow power stations, but you may need to modify the panel’s cables to have the connectors that Ecoflow uses.

Can you use the ecoflow batteries while they are charging? Thereby, not draining them but having them continuously power the fridge, and AC? Ex. Using one or two 400w panel?
@diypreppertv
@diypreppertv Жыл бұрын
Hello Juan! You should be able to use them to power devices while solar charging. However, an AC may draw more power than your panels can keep up with. As far as how much solar the power station can handle, that will depend on the specific device. For example, the Delta 2 can accept up to 500 watts of solar input, so you couldn’t do 2 400-watt panels. You could, however do 2 220-watt panels.
