IF you are going to all this trouble get bolts same size as your nails and use nuts and washers, under enough load the nails will pull out

This might just be a one or two time use for a job which explains why buying an engine hoist isn’t worth it.

A tip that may come in handy, use clamps to hold components in place. Also drilled holes and bolts will be much stronger and can be disassembled for storage. Just a thought why not assemble the top first, then take it apart to assemble the bottom of the legs. If you use bolts and washers with nuts it can all be taken apart for storage number each part for reassembly. Make long sections that can be bolted between the bottom of the legs to reduce movement. A sound idea with plenty of room for improvement.

You could, but (2) 2x4's nailed together saves money

Looks good to me, how ever my only change to the design is using screws, and also putting either swivel or fixed coasters on it so it can be rolled around. The fixed would let it roll forwards and backwards, that way it can be pushed easily out of the way and you can re position it when working on it.

Ok question...Was this to be used in the garage or out in the driveway? I see that the garage doors were becoming an issue with overhead height. Otherwise have seen similar design pull engine from a lifted pickup truck..thanks for sharing.

First u could've used nuts and bolts and it might be a bit more expensive but will be stronger if you added wood glue to your joints and even when putting them together

I know it's been a few years since you built the engine hoist, but do remember the name of the nailing plates you used and where to purchase them.

Not being a dick but you just built a 4x4 so why not go pick up about 4 or 5 4x4s pre drill holes and just bolt them together then you can take it were you need it but the 2x4 one looks good

I've used this hoists over 50 times not one problem. I've pulled truck beds, V8 engines, truck doors and even a truck cab off of its frame. So I think you need to give me credit for trying something instead of trying to tear me down. 🤔

+ScottysDetailing Sir, I give you LOTS of credit for trying and doing, all I am saying THINK SAFETY FIRST, for the sake of your family!!! I worked for over 40 years in a MFG plant in Quality Control and have seen sincere folks KILL or SEVERELY injure themselves RIGGING something when for a few bucks more could of made themselves safer. Again GREAT idea, but could of been thought out better!

Thanks for your concern. I understand your angle now. So we have been looking into a attic hoist with a metal I beam frame in the attic mounted to a I beam track for more safety. Big companies have deep pockets for all the right safety gear. When your a DYI fix it yourself guy you have to do what you can afford for now. 😬
