@Emikolaitis8 жыл бұрын
Cool to see this done. One concern, which I'm sure you could change if you wanted, is the diameter of that intake section. Stock manifold s2000's benefit from a 4 inch intake tube. any concern that the intake section is a little under sized to allow the cfm flow into the box that the itb's will be wanting. Basically some what of a bottle neck
@speedacademy8 жыл бұрын
Good question, Eric. You'll see more on this subject in the next video where we experiment with intake tube diameter.

This is great carbon work guys, induction air boxes do tend to choke off the air supply to the engine and your ITBs totally eliminate that problem. So... by shrouding the ITBs you have in effect choked the ITBs air supply exactly as an airbox would do, which completely defeats their purpose, but the new air box looks good. Did you consider instead modifying the hood? You could had gone two ways and design it to provide either 1. Easier access to outside air on the intake side of the engine to reach the ITBs, or 2. Allow hot air an easier path to exit the engine compartment on the header side. On the header side you would have to decrease pressure and on the intake side you would have to increase it. Hood mods may also allow you to vent hot air from the radiator. I figured since you guys have already Frankensteined this car I doubt anyone would notice an ugly hood in an already hideous car. Cheers and keep your hands off the Porsche.
@wesleykurtz64868 жыл бұрын
I think cutting an opening in the hood directly above the ITBs and forming some sort of air box/scoop would have been really cool/unique

7:55 it was a really clean carbon fiber cut! Is he using only a scissor to cut the carbon fiber? I have tried using a scissor to cut wet carbon fiber, but it became such a mess. tried using a knife, but it wouldn't even cut. -.-
@patw52pb18 жыл бұрын
It takes a very sharp scissor to clean cut carbon fiber fabric. We have found that ceramic scissors and shears work great and stay sharp.
@derekyam18058 жыл бұрын
Damn, it came out great! But one question, it looks to me cyl 4 and cyl 1 has the same volume of space in the box, wouldn't that result less air flowing into cyl 4? Shouldn't it taper down into cyl 4 to create a similar airflow to cyl 1?
@patw52pb18 жыл бұрын
No.
@speedacademy8 жыл бұрын
Hey Derek. We just built it to the fit the space and will let the dyno and the data we log on the dyno and at the track tell us if it's working well or not. Sasha's 350Z has similarly shaped (non-tapered) airboxes for his ITBs and his VQ is among the most powerful NA in the world, so we're not too concerned about it.
@walt350z8 жыл бұрын
Awesome video guys. Sweet to see the s2k getting better and better. Just wondering, should the carbon air box perform better then a hood slit or turbo inlet ducts like the GTR or Evo 9 or 10? Interested in your thoughts guys! Keep it up!

Nice work on the custom box, but wouldnt cutting a hole in the hood and scooping it to the filter be easier. Probably could have made a carbon heat shield or a box to suround the filter to get a ram air affect. Just a thought
@speedacademy8 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily as you'd have to build a scoop for it and we've never seen it done without looking horrible. This is the cleanest method possible.

Fiber glass would work for this if i didn't have the money for carbon?
@fawncashew8 жыл бұрын
Basomga fibre glass would work (although obviously the construction process would be different) but carbon fibre is not hugely expensive to do yourself, and most of the equipment needed can be made using stuff you will probably already have around the house. The carbon fibre weave material itself costs somewhere in the region of $50-$60 per square metre, and is easy to find a lot cheaper in the form of offcuts and so on
@Basomga8 жыл бұрын
Where i live the price is probably 4 or 5 times this in my currency, so yeah

@IntegraDIY8 жыл бұрын
Aaron Grady it's actually cheap, you can get the carbon material and epoxy for less then $100. But they forgot to vacuum seal the carbon which is very important and that process is a little difficult
@yangyu99908 жыл бұрын
+1 for cheap wetlay just takes practice to get it looking good molds are also a pain to setup right if the part is complex but hey, if you have a lot of time wetlay is the way to go

I'm a little slightly annoyed at the air box because it'll slightly favor the rear cylinders because of the shape ( especially if forced induction) otherwise super cool! You should definitely paint it so it still says jenvey on it
@patw52pb18 жыл бұрын
No it does not. The air box shape does not have to be symmetrical and the volumetric area of that air box is irrelevant in this case. Neither the air box, the ITBs nor the intake manifold dictate the air flow volume in this case since each of the components are capable of flowing more volume than the swept volume. Airflow volume is determined by the swept cylinder volume and volumetric efficiency of the engine.
@pvkjhilk83238 жыл бұрын
now that you have a good mold why not sale some carbon airboxes for $$. would love to see you guys make a carbon hood.

@youtune99978 жыл бұрын
why does he choose to go with the with lay method and not the vacuumbag method? any real advantages or disadvantages?
@devastate7548 жыл бұрын
vacuum bag methods is to save weight by removing extra solvent epoxy+ reduce chance of bubbles
@speedacademy8 жыл бұрын
Hadie's got it, plus vacuum bagging may make for a slightly stronger end product since it spreads the epoxy out in the material but as long as we do a thorough just with the wet lay-up Kevin's method produces a very strong product. His work has been used on many race cars including Mantella Autosport's KTM Xbox GT4 cars in the Pirelli World Challenge series so his methods have passed serious real world tests.
@youtune99978 жыл бұрын
Speed Academy thanks for the detailed explanation! i asked because i still need to make some aero parts for my e46 gtr rep. and this method takes a lot less time then the vacuumbag method does!!
