These kinds of videos are very helpful especially when framing isn't our first occupation. The pace of explanation, description of terminology and close-ups of terminations and edges certainly increase knowledge of what is acceptable and sound. Thank you.

Hi Greg hopefully you can help. I am in the warm climate in Florida. I purchased a house with a detached 20'x35' gambrel roof garage with partially completed apartment above. it has ridge vent & gable vent in the upper attic area. It has a soffit which is closed off but could be vented. how are gambrel roofs typically vented? do you run baffle vents and vent from the low soffit in gambrels that have a soffit? if so then should I close off the two end gable vents? the apartment is 70% sheetrocked & insulated with batt insulation there was a small leak in one corner before I got the roof replaced was able to bleach the sheetrock and remove moisture insulation in 2 rafters. would replace if recommended & which would make spray foam application easier if that is recommended.

Basically you install vents any where you can, at the bottom or eaves, gable vents on sides or dormer vents on roof. It's difficult for me to advise on foam or rafter replacement.

Hey Greg, In your opinion, what 2 story building/garage design provides the most useable square footage per dollar spent? Is the gambrel style one of the best? I also wonder about shed dormers cost/benefit? Thanks.

I've built a few things in my life one being a home. Somewhere around 2016 I rebuilt my shed ; instead of a straight gambrel rafter on the lower end I took a 2' 2x4 ripped it corner to corner on the lower 2' giving it Dutch bump out look. This gives a bit of overhang which looks nice but keeps water from dripping down your sliding. If done right you can use a 4x8 sheet for the lower portion of gambrel an split it for the lower half. Note: my span is 10' so use / adjust to your requirements.

Have you ever shown a vaulted ceiling with a dormer doorway? I’m not an engineer or a builder but would love to see something on how the loads transfer from the main ridge beam, down to the smaller dormer beam.

Email me a picture of the design and I will put it on my list of videos to be made.

I’m trying to correctly build a 40’ attic truss.. Is that possible??
@gregvancom2 жыл бұрын
I don't think I would, but if you do, then I would suggest doing as much research as possible.

@@gregvancom I’ve done a lot of research,and nothing adds us, but it seems structurally sound to me .. lol

with no venting this would get hot as heck, why not extend the roof so it has a 1' foot overhang and then you can install some venting at the eves?

Awesome, then this will work great in cold climates, thanks for the tip.

@@gregvancom nope moisture will build up and possibly cause mold. many gables roofs use powered fans for ventilation at the gables.

I have to say I rather like gambrel roofs... Plenty of space in those short walls for drawers and in wall shelves. I would want to have glue lam arches if possible.
