I have one question.. I have heard many guitar teacher suggests that left hand finger should be angled a little towards right hand/ guitar body.. because that way one can easily access to the 4th fret.. But, I generally practice guitar by straight finger parallel to the fret metal & maintain even gap between my four fingers, in that way I also can stretch my 4th finger to the 4th fret easily.. & also I place my finger to the corner to the fret metal & press by my finger tip.. So, my question is do I need to change my left hand position from straight/parallel to the fret metal to a little angled to the right hand or guitar body?? and If I don't change my left hand position then will that be a problem for my future playing & will it be a problem in playing guitar techniques like hammer on, pull of, slide, vibrato etc.?? Please answer.. If you answer this I will be very grateful to you.. Thank you.. 🎸

I am still at 150 Day 30: I can keep up with 150 although it sounds awful

I don't play metal and I don't play progressive rock, but I stumbled onto this channel months ago and decided for fun to see if I could learn a little about shredding. I play primarily Blues and Classic Rock (I am all about those Boomer Bends) and I was shocked last night when I went to go learn some new solo's at how much I have improved. Staggering! how easy somethings were, that would have given me a hard time 6 months ago. I just walk over them without even thinking. Older solo's I know sound cleaner and I am adding in new flourishes with these techniques Improved picking technique, improved finger discipline, not having to play at what would have been my max speed, and more. These workouts really improve every style, and your playing in general. Can't wait to rock this one for the next 30 days and see what happens. Keep up the great training and great videos, Cheers

Day five: practiced polishing skills up and BARELY got to 90 after non stop practicing for 1.25 hours twice. Already feeling the improvement thanks Bernth! Day 6: 100 bpm (sloppy) Day 7: took in person lessons and wasn’t able to practice this exercise Day 8: tried to slow it down and improve my playing quality (90) Day 9: can play 90 cleanly, working on 100 Days 10-11: unable to practice Day 12: can cleanly do 100, 110 is manageable but could be better Day 13: cleaning up 110, 120 unclean Day 14: still cleaning 110 Day 15: satisfied with 110, picking cleanly at 120 is tough for me but like 110, I think I can get it with time Day 16: 120 is decent, gonna try 130 when my wrists aren’t dying 😅 bc I practiced a lot today Day 17: 130 is okay, 140 is choppy Day 18: decided to slow it down again at 130 Day 19: think I hit my first roadblock 140 still challenging Essentially days 20-23: kept practicing until I could get past 140 Day 24: 150 is manageable, could be better Day 24: improved 150 Day 26: 160 doesn’t sound terrible actually, just some minor adjustments may be needed Days 26-31: I’ve just been doing this exercise on and off, 160 sounds pretty good so I’d say I’d completed the challenge Some tips for new people: no need to hold the pick too tightly, being relatively relaxed but controlled is the sweet spot! Don’t reveal too much of the pick, this makes it harder to escape the strings and you will feel more resistance. Playing at a slightly slower tempo with quality is better than playing mediocrely at a faster tempo. If you are unsure of how something sounds, play with a clean tone to easily identify mistakes. This challenge is very doable! I’m an intermediate and this is just a special chromatic essentially

I have been playing guitar for over 10 years, but I was self-taught from the beginning. I never really knew what to practice, and was honestly quite lax with myself lol. I spent a huge majority of that time basically learning songs that I liked, and this pretty much allowed me to play or learn whatever I wanted by ear (granted that it was within my boundaries technique-wise). When it came down to other things like picking fast, I found that I was extremely weak in those aspects. I had horrible picking and left+right hand coordination once the BPMs started rising. So now I'm spending a lot of my time playing catch-up. I stumbled across your channel and watched a few of your videos, and decided to go along with this one. I started about a week ago at Level 8 @ 120 bpm, and it was pretty comfortable to me. 130 bpm was where my coordination started to desync, so I took that as my starting point to grind. I practiced around this tempo, going up and down as needed. Fast forward to now and I just hit 140 bpm and both my hands are in sync. I love you Bernth lol you won me over 🤣I am sure I will hit 160bpm in the coming weeks. Please never stop making videos, you are truly amazing.

@@Tybren haha I have yet to reach 160! I was able to reach 150 the other week, though it wasn’t too clean. my hands just sort of fall apart when going 160. Then again, there are some weeks that I neglected alternate picking exercises all together so a part of it is probably my inconsistency as well lol. My hand synchronization has increased dramatically though so doing this routine has other benefits than just speed!

So i got my first guitar 10 years ago at the age of 13, but I never took playing guitar seriously enough. I want to finally change that. So here I am. Start: 07.11.2024 Day 1: 50bpm: after the first try, I noticed that I can follow the pattern quite nicely, but at some points I definitely need to practice more. I'll update later if I got any better after practice. - yeah no still need practice lmao Day 2: see ya tomorrow, 50bpm, also because I was wondering how long others practice; I practice this about 15 minutes a day at the moment. Of course I could do it longer, but I feel like 15 minutes is a healthy practice time Day 3: I did improve, but I'm still not happy with the tones. Sometimes I accidentally mute a string with my pinky, because it's lying too flat on the strings. Of course I could just aim to be faster, but I want to get the base right, so still 50bpm Day 4: maybe I'm too hard on myself, but I really want to have clear tones - still 50bpm Day 5: I need to pause this challenge, because I realised something. I taught myself how to play guitar a long time ago, and after all this time I never saw that my technique, even tho it works, has some serious flaws in it. And this is exactly what is preventing me from going further. So I'm shifting my focus to eliminate those flaws and come back again to proceed with this wonderful exercise. See ya~

It's the 6th of August 2024 and I'm starting the challenge again. Hope I'll continue. Day 1: 80 bpm consistently, 90 bpm sloppy. Day 2: Stuck at 90 bpm, a bit sloppy, but gaining confidence. Day 3: I am now comfortable with 90 bpm, although it's still sloppy. I tried 100 bpm, I need more speed in the left hand. I'll try my best to get there. Day 4 (after 2 days break): 90bpm very sloppy and difficult after the break Day 5: I'm confident with the speed for 90bpm, but it's still very sloppy. Gotta work on that. I tried 100 bpm and it didn't turn that bad. Day 6: There were many days I couldn't play the guitar. Today I tried a little bit and reached 90 bpm. It was sloppy, but there's some progress.

I'll edit this as I go Starting this October 23rd, 2024 - After learning and practicing a bit, managed to get 90BPM, but 100BPM is too fast. October 26th: Still stuck at 100BPM, but 90 is a lot cleaner now. Nov 2nd: A lot better at 100BPM. Haven't been practicing every day as I'm suppossed to, but still improving. Something I noticed is that my left hand is out of sync with my right hand, so the notes sound "muted" because I remove the finger right as my right hand picks the string. Also had a go at 110BPM but that is totally outta reach for now. November 3rd: After a bit of warmup on 90BPM I surprised myself by getting consistent clean runs on 100BPM, and could even get rough runs on 110BPM. Neat!

Day 1 Start (March 6, 2023) 110 bpm clean | 120 sloppy Day 4: Can hit 120 (sloppy and slightly tense) Day 11: I can finally hit 160 consistently and clean with no major issue. Took a while to adjust my picking form to accommodate for the speed/looseness needed. Day 25 (March 30): Still doing this daily. 160 is no problem for me after sufficient warm up. I'm doing this every morning right after waking up so sometimes the hands are extra tight. Also trying to utilize more thumb swivel to minimize wrist movement when alt picking to see if I can build up more speed that way.

1/5/24- I could get pretty consistent at 90 bpm, but I struggle with synchronization and I am tensing my shoulder. I'll have to slow it down to work on form for a few minutes each session to help me in the long run. 1/7/24- Haven't played too much in the last 2 days, but I was able to get 100 easily and got a very close attempt at 110. I'll give it another 15 mins to clean up my movements and give 110 another try. 1/8/24- Just did a 45-60 minute session to practice this and some other things. Got several clean attempts of 110 and was able to get through 120 relatively smoothly twice. 130 was a little too fast still though. Will come back and get a rough attempt tomorrow for sure.

Started Sep 4th, 2023 Day 1: Having trouble with the pattern, memorized about half of it Day 2: Memorized most of the pattern Day 3: Finally got the pattern down, consistent enough with 50bpm Day 4: I can keep up with 60bpm with occasional mistakes. Don’t have much time to play today so I’ll attempt 70bpm tomorrow Day 5: I can keep up with 70, 80 is very difficult Day Day 8: It has been a few days. Something I realized is that I need to work on my picking technique. I’ll update again when I make more progress Day 9: With my new picking technique I can keep up with 70, the problem I’m facing is I can’t seem to get any speed ‘perfect’. Day 10: Been making less mistakes and am more motivated now. I’m able to do 70 relatively consistently, but 80 is still a struggle. Day 11: I can keep up with 80, but it is not easy Day ??: It's been about a month since I last tried this. I am able to do 90 and keep up with 100 after having applied alternate picking to what I already know. Gonna continue my long break from this challenge to focus on other things but I may return one day.

Started several days ago. Bit of a backstory - can't shred to save my life and got horrible technique with years of bad habits that I'm now trying to correct, "flying pinky" being the biggest offender, so I'm also trying to do routines to fix those at the same time I'm working on this. Day 1: Trying to learn and get through the whole thing in free tempo without forgetting what note comes next xD Day 2: Starting to get the hang of 50 BPM without stumbling, pattern memorizing issues for now as opposed to techniques. Day 3: 50 BPM down, 60 BPM doable but not effortless, 70 BPM breaks down, complete noise past that. Got a looooong road ahead of me, it seems. Day 4: Managed to start being able to do 70 BPM throughout, but far from consistent. Couldn't get a single coherent run at 80 BPM. Day 5: Getting marginally better... I think? Still couldn't crack 80 BPM. 70 is more or less consistent now though. Day 6: 80 BPM down! Just need to make it feel less tense and forceful. 90 feels basically impossible at the moment, can't even get through the first bar. Day 7: Yesterday's progress might have been a fluke. Forget 90, I couldn't even do 80 BPM reliably today. Day 8: Although still extremely tense and forceful, 90 BPM is starting to sound... recognizable. Yeah, let's put it that way. Day 9: Still working on 90 BPM.

I'm late to the party, but I'm trying this exercise now. I'm not much of a speed demon, but I want to improve my alternate picking speed and accuracy. At the moment I am stuck at 90 BMP. I can ALMOST get 100, but it's a little fast for me. I'm 62 years old so I'm trying to unlearn some old habits. I tend to move my index finger and thumb rather than my wrist. Day 5. I was stuck at 100bpm for 4 days. Right and left hand problems, no coordination...ring finger and pinky were not collaborating. I had to create another exercise to free these fingers and make them work as fast as the index middle and ring finger.Did three notes per strings with middle, ring and pinky alone I have reached 110bpm and need to focus a lot more. As I progress I see all kind of issues with my playing which I am able to correct by creating other exercises. This is very interesting topic. Thanks Bernth.

I will share my progress as well. Day 1: 40mins just to learn the progression, 50bpm is actually harder than 60bpm as i dont think as much in 60bpm, 70 is doable with some mistakes. 2 hours later 70 is easy, 80 is doable with mistakes. Day 2: 80 is easy. Weirdly i struggle with the direct ascends and descends after the 10th of 4th string. I always break the rythm and cannot return to it :(. 1 hour later 90 and 100 achieved. 110 is just ridiculous. Seems tmy left hand gave out :/ 1 more hour later 100 is normal, 110 is doable with some slip ups. Day 3: I found the issue, my pinky soar through the galaxy thus speed loss on my left hand denies me from gaining speed. working on pinky positioning. 110 is VERY HARD. 100 become somewhat doable. 120 is not fair. Day 4: Fixing my technique, 90 and 100 became easier while 110 is still very hard. 120 is impossible. 1 hour later first clean 100. Found out that resting my wrist on the bridge instead of not resting is much better and make me more relaxed. 110 is doable with slip ups at the end of day. Day 5: First cleanish 110, very few slip ups. My right hand is good now but my left hand feels very stiff especially if i do 3 of these loops back to back. Day 6: 110 is doable with slip ups. 2 hours later, Something weird happened, i just unlocked the ability i guess now 120 is doable? how? Day 7: 90 and below is just boring at this point, 120 is doable after warm up. 110 more clean. Guys... im an idiot. I just saw that my picking directions are all f ed up. It gave me huge clarity while playing. Day 8: 110 is very doable with warm up. 90 and 100 is easy. 120 is still a challenge but not impossible. 1 month later.... Day 1: 120 is doable. 130 is hard but not impossible.

I appreciate all the efforts that a lot of you teachers make to help us increase our speed. Most of the time, the challenge is perceived as being a picking challenge that can be resolved by good control of the picking hand. In my case, picking hand is the easy part. Whichever exercise I try, I am always stuck at about 85 bpm for 16th Notes (or even less, and I've been playing for years!) because of my left hand! My pinky is pretty small (much smaller than yours, Bernth) and it forces me into a position that has a serious limit it seems. I was wondering: does your Alternate Picking Masterclass take into account the left hand? I don't know what to do anymore and I practice hard!

Can't believe how much progress I made. First time I tried it I had to take like an hour to internalize the pattern, then pretty quickly built up to 110 bpm in the following days. Now, like two months or so later, I'm at 140 bpm (albeit quite sloppy), which felt totally impossible when I first started. Slow but steady progress. Onward to the last level of the challenge! 12-12: Starting to try out 150 bpm, still quite some mistakes 13-12 140 bpm. Not a great day today 18-12 Have still been hanging around 140 bpm. Tried 150 bpm a couple times but it's really messy. 19-12 150 BPM starts to feel less elusive, albeit still very difficult. 21-12 140 BPM. Need to get rid of the flying pinky and learn 'economy of motion'. 03-01 130 BPM. Remember kids, we all have good and bad days. 07-01 150 BPM, but very sloppy. 22-02 150 BPM, 160 BPM finally seems to be in reach. 10-03 150 BPM, quite a bit cleaner than before. Trying to change the pick grip for more consistent results. 12-03 150 BPM, getting more solid by the day.

Don't give up, buddy! Rome wasn't built in a day and speed doesn't come from one day or the other. If you're hitting a plateau, try to evaluate your technique and really focus on having that right. On the other hand, as I've found out myself, don't be afraid to push yourself, and disregard technique every now and then just to see what it feels like to play faster. For me a big limiting factor was being very cramped in my left hand, having way too much tension. As soon as I addressed that, I went up 10-20 bpm. Trying to work my way up now from 130 to 140 bpm.

Im able to manage 120 bpm but Ive noticed that I cant play other patterns ( already known) at the same speed. Is this because of the muscle memory developed for this particular exercise? Looking for some advice folks

I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to shred guitar and guitar in general. Here's my practice journey: - Day 1: 90bpm safe, 100 possible but with a few mistakes - Day 2: 100bpm has become more fluent. [more to come (hopefully 😅)] Thank you so much Bernth for the amazing video content! Greetings from Germany 😃

Day one 90 bpm, but dirty. 80 bpm clean. Day two much cleaner 90 bpm, still with mistakes. Day 3: decent bpm 80, almost perfect 90 bpm, managed to do first half of bpm 100 without mistakes. Day$ 4: 90 bpm with some mistakes, done 100 bpm almost perfectly ( maybe 1 mistake), first 2 phrases of 110 bpm (my brain cant keep up with hands lol xD) day 5: 100 bpm with somewhat more mistakes (second loop last phrase cucked) but easier to manage 110 bpm (at least it not feels impossible), even pushed myself to 120 bpm and got right some first phrases. day 6: cleaner 100 bpm, 110 bpm with some mistakes at the end of first and second loop, easier to handle 120 bpm, but still dirty. day 7: way worse 100 bpm, cant handle 110 bpm, thinking about slowing tempo to 50 maybe 40 BPM and work at this speed for a while. Day8 ^ practiced at 40.50.60 bpm. day 9 sweep picking practice. day 10 skipped practicing day 11. got to 100 bpm but dirty again day 12: skipped 1 day day13: kinda meh bpm 90, awful. barely handeble 100 bpm day 14 skipped this one day 15 skipped guitar practice day 16 cleanest 90 bpm so far, but 100 bpm barely handeble (slightly better than at day 13) Summary for 2 weeeks from dirty 90 bpm to perfect 90 bpm. Gonna update my progress weekly, not daily from now on.

I think one of the challenges I’m having with something like this is, believe it or not, playing it at 50bpm. I guess my Brian’s and hands feel like they’re waiting eons for the one to come back around again. Lol Maybe it’s just me trying to sync with metronome when I begin practicing. Can I throw in a random German word here? How about Käsekuchen? 🙂

Everyone has to understand there’s different techniques to different speeds I’d say one you’re pushing around 110-120 bpm work on keeping your wrist a little more straight and relaxing your thumb while anything before that work on using your wrist to get solid up and down strokes yes some people can probably get higher than 120 with just their wrist but for most of y’all try altering your technique once you hit faster speeds. It’ll feel weird at first but eventually you’ll get it down. Keep shredding y’all👏🏼

Feb 14, 2023 I'm starting this workout; I haven't played my guitar for like 5 years. Here's my Dat 1 so far and will update it as it goes: Day 1: Started at 50, struggling on the picking pattern and tabs for about an hour and got the hang of it. After being comfortable in about an hour, went from 50 to 60pm. I struggled at 60bpm and I don't even know why. Got stuck for an hour and just decided to turn it up to 70bpm on which I think is most comfortable with me. I can go 3 bars without any mistakes. I stopped cause my fingers hurt. Will try to practice 70bpm tomorrow and see if I can up the tempo. Day 2: started at 70bpm then got comfortable to 80bpm. Tried 90bpm but can't get consistency, my right hand was getting stiff and my fingers hurt. tried to 100bpm but struggled. I'll let my fingers rest and practice 90bpm tomorrow and hit 100bpm. Day 3: Practiced slow from 80-90bpm to actually getting the hang of 100bpm. I was struggling at first because I can't figure out why my left hand fingers are so tensed, gradually discovered that I was anchoring my index finger on the neck without any reason. Relaxed a bit and practiced my finger positioning and did 100bpm. I tried 110bpm but damn, impossible I may have to start 100bpm and gradually up it to 110bpm. Day 4: Only practiced for an hour cause the blisters on my fingers ain't healed yet and it hurts like hell when playing. I was able to keep up at 110bpm (a bit sloppy though) which I thought was impossible. Can't play anymore cause my fingers hurt. I'll try to beat 110bpm tomorrow and hopefully to try 120bpm. Day 5: Was trying to practice but I felt really off and hands are not in synch. Day 6: Fingers don't hurt anymore and I figured why I was off yesterday. I was tensioning my forearm too much that it affected my picking hand. Worked on it for an hour and as soon as my forearm is tensed I stopped because its going to get sloppy anyway. I already broke my 110bpm wall and I was surprised that my first time on 120bpm was smooth but needs a little work. I'll continue to practice until all the notes are clear. I tried 130bpm, its doable but I need to work on relaxing my right arm. Day 7: practiced for about 1hr and I'm stuck at 120bpm :( I feel like 130bpm is impossible. I'll again tomorrow if there's any improvement.

Started 4/29/23 A little on my background. Played for over 15 years. I can do chords/rhythm and some fingerstyle but I always struggled with lead/playing with a pick (on single strings). I had stopped playing guitar regularly for a couple years, only strumming it here and there. But in the past couple months I have been inspired and determined to learn lead style playing, learn scales, learn the fretboard, etc. Definitely having trouble getting my speed up to a reasonable level. I have a book I'm following to learn scales and it says "16th notes at 90bpm is ADEQUATE for now". I can't help but laugh because it seems impossible right now but it insists on getting to that speed before continuing the book. So, I came here looking for exercises to get better and this one seems pretty good! So without further delay, here's my progress. Day 1 - Just getting the riff figured out. Kind of getting 50bpm somewhat. Day 2 - 50bpm is getting clean. 60bpm seems attainable but I noticed that I am having trouble syncing up my fingers when going down. 9-8-7-6 (like that). Riff is better memorized overall though. Day 3 - 70bpm is actually going okay. Sometimes I get it and sometimes I jamble it all to hell lol. I didn't attempt 80. Day 4 - 70bpm improved. Still can't do it more than a few times in a row at best. 80bpm is a struggle but within grasp. I did slow down to 60bpm and it actually seemed slow to me, but it was good to improve my accuracy. Day 5 - missed Day 6 - 70bpm improved. Started gracing 80bpm. Attempted 90 but fall apart. Day 7 - 70bpm is pretty comfortable. 80bpm somewhat consistent. 85 doable occasionally. 90 still not quite there. Struggling with my pick now. Feels like it's getting "caught" in the strings. Guess I'll review some "how to hold a pick" videos. WEEK BREAK (went on vacation) Day 8 - 90bpm! A little rough but I'm getting it! And I was able to do my C major scale at 90bpm too (also somewhat rough) but it's there! I have no idea where this came from. Idk if taking a break actually helped me? Is that a thing? Anyways, 100 is somewhat there. At 110 it falls apart. After 110 I keep picking without fretting notes to practice picking quickly.

Finally at 150 BPM after deciding to study my pick grip. Still some missing notes here and there but I finally got to this check point on day one of mastering moving my hand as little as possible and finding the right pick grip. Yall can do it too, just study how you practice and it'll work wonders

You got this! Just keep chipping away at it. When I practiced this a few months ago, I could only play up to about 110 after a week or two; the first day was pretty rough. I never thought I'd be able to play anything faster than the first two solos in Metallica's Sanitarium, but with (mostly) consistent effort over the past few months, I surprised myself the other day by nailing some of the fast parts of the Bark at the Moon solo. It's that thing that all of us hate to hear, but it's really just all about practice - even when you feel like you can't play very well, by literally just playing new things on the guitar, you'll get better over time, even if you don't notice it in the moment.

Started on 26/01/2024 Had to start really slow as I've put off Alternate picking for years so gotta train out bad habits Day 1: Had trouble to begin with but after 20m got to 30 bpm with little errors still feels stiff though Day 2: (took a break over the weekend) Did about 10m today and improvement was crazy think alot of it was remembering the riff, can do 50bpm now with some errors think imma stick here and focus on correctly picking technique for a couple days before trying to go higher Day 3: Stayed on 50BPM Doing a lot better feeling better, still feel a little stiff and missed a couple notes with picking hand couple times Day 4: 60BPM! Have some runs where I do it near perfect and other runs where I miss some notes every so often again with picking hand so need to look into picking technique make sure I'm keep correct form! (Had to skip a day due to work) Day 5: Hit 70BPM with some errors although it feels forced/stiff 60BPM feels good though! Day 6: I can sense this is a sticking point Still feel stiff and forced on 70BPM although potentially a little less (need to focus on making sure my fretting hand is making as little movement as possible As I keep lifting my pinky waay of the strings) Day 7: 70BPM slightly less forced Day 8: returned after the flu 😵💫 70BPM but making mistakes, need to get back into rhythm Took a huge break to focus on music theory lmao 30/05/2024 Day 9: 80BPM (noticed my trouble is with going back up the scale my fretting hand has trouble removing the fingers one at a time with proper technique

Day 1 6/4/24: got to about 80bpm without too many mistakes. got tricky at 90bpm. Day like 5-6 7/29/24 got to 90-100 bpm without too much difficulty. got hard at 110-120 Day 7 - 8/1/24 got through 50-100 again, 110 felt ok. 120 had a decent amount slip ups and 130 was a shit show Idk what day it is. got a really good run of 110 bpm until the end where i messed up a bit, 120 and 130 were rough but better.
