Another great vid. The loosely connected baseplate on the back of that jazz club mils was triggering me big time😂. The mils plates just gives you so much opportunity to add landscape variations, ponds, streams, etc as well as the obvious roads and paths. You could probably try a stud peg in as your joiner between mils plates instead of a full peg as that would make it easier to disconnect your mils plates later 👍

I finally broke down and decided to switch from the old road plates to the new road plates. It just looks so much cleaner and nicer… and I have a place to get rid of my weird colour bricks underneath 😉

Another tip to lower the costs: Unless you have a pick a brick wall with 4x4 plates it’s cheaper to buy 16x16 plates instead. Added bonus is that you don’t need as many supporting 2x2 bricks as well. Of course only a few 2x2 bricks on the edges is not enough to prevent bending, but some sort of a middle ground is certainly possible.

You lose a bit of flexibility for running wires underneath if you do that though, which is one of the main benefits of doing MILS for me

You can for example combine two or more baseplates together and so long as the joins are overlapping will make equally as strong MILS plates but bigger. This is useful for modulars like Assembly Square which is 1.5 baseplates wide. I built a bigger one for a castle and is like one rigid unit.

Yeah, I combined 2 baseplates for the MILS plate for Assembly Square and the Natural History Museum

Great explanation/ video. I use the 16 x 16 art set baseplates under my modulars and off brand bricks and official lego plates on my roads.

You definitely need to shop around more when buying parts, new 2x2 bricks are around 3-4p each on bricklink in the quantities you bought instead of the 9p per brick you paid.

Thank you! would you suggest using it underneath the Disney Castle which is stand alone? it’s so difficult and awkward to move it at all. 🤗🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The problem with that is it’s an awkward shape, so if makes it more difficult. Not impossible, but more difficult. We haven’t done it for the Disney castle. Just for the stuff in the city they’ll be moved around more often.

Advice please, whilst I 'sort of' understand MILS plates, how do you make them just for set collectors? We are nowhere near ready for a Lego room, but like to move our Displays around every so often, how would you MILS plate Rivendell?

Work out how many plates you need to sit it on, then just plop in on top would be my advice!

And then, in all the spare space around the set, you can add landscape, foliage, etc to enhance the build. There are lots of great examples of the Medieval Blacksmith done this way, with wells, ponds, paths and more trees Also if it is displayed, you probably want the seen edges to all be the same colour

This was very interesting. What would happen if you put another base plate on top instead of all the individual white pieces? So it was like a brick sandwich?

Baseplates don't have a way of making a connection to bricks from the underside. You need to use plates.

I built my first MILS for Sanctum set, fully enclosed the sides, which wasn't necessary. I've not found Brickowl any cheaper than Bricklink. It might be worth playing with Studio, as I'm sure there's some good cheats for building just facades and outsides of some buildings, keeping the cost down by removing play features etc. Then you can buy the other half of that fugly train :D

I really never see the point of MILS plate, the cost does not justify the benefit, i can move all my modulars with the original plate no problem at all. The amount of plastic needed to build is crazy. How do put lights in the channel when you have built a modular building on the base, you can't just peel up a 4x4 plate?

It’s easier than you’d think to lift up the individual plates. Most of the building can come up in one go, that’s how I transferred the Sanctum Sanctorum onto a MILS plate. Trying to move that one upstairs on its original plate is what convinced me to move to MILS, it was very wobbly. I would hate to move something like the Avengers Tower on its original plate. Plus, without MILS the roads would be higher than the curb. So lots of benefits!

You'll find, over a short period of time, that the corners of the baseplates, once built on, start to 'curl up' at the corners. Nothing major, but enough to be noticeable. Yes you could of course connect the corners with maybe 1x4, 1x6, or 1x8 light grey tiles.
