Casing should always have a reveal from the jamb, putting it flush never looks good. Also make sure your reveals around the window are correct- you don't want an uneven amount of the window frame showing from one side to the other. Easiest way to do this is measure and pre make the jambs, put them in as one, shim square to the window, nail off and add casing with a proper reveal back.

@@patrickbellefleur5508 and it doesn't look good without a reveal, and putting wood flush never looks good after paint. I'm not regurgitating anything. I've been a professional carpenter for 20 years. I know what is proper work and what isn't. If you don't understand why a reveal is important then you haven't done much finishing carpentry at all. If you want to know more about why reveals are done and basic carpentry there is info online. I've already given a tip on how to make things easier when building the jambs.

The why and hows of reveals are taught to first year apprentices. Work without a proper consistent reveal indicates an amateur or someone not skilled with finishing work.

I'm adding 3/8" paneling to an outer barn tackroom wall with an existing window. So there is a 3/8 inch difference between wall and window now. How do I do this

I have replacement windows in my home and there's little room for a sill or even building out with moulding. The thickness from the window edge into the room is the width of the drywall - 1/2". With this limited dimension, any suggestions for building out and installing a sill, etc. using 1x4? Thanks.

I've probally done this 50 times, yet, I've never done it without any reveal. My thinking is that stuff moves slightly. I guess the reveal, hides the move. I think cutting flush (outside molding, attached to window trim), will leave the cracked paint, where things are moving. Your's Looks good also.
