We are building roll away nesting boxes for our layers. The design is similar to Ridgdale Permaculture's design.

Thank you so much for sharing this great build. I built 2 of these on my chicken wagon. They work beautifully, and you're correct about the angles, 14 is too steep. I ended up at 10 degrees and it worked excellent. I'm looking to raise Bresse chickens this year as well. Thanks for putting out great vids!

Hey hey. I realy enyoj all your videos. Please make part 2 as soon as possible :). You wont belive that i just build something like that 2 days ago. Yes on 1st januar. I have 20 chickens and 20 more are coming so i made one of these roll away nesting boxes. But i was doing it all by my feeling. I think that my angle is not good...still testing it out, today is second day...but i dont know. We will see. I really looking forward to see the finnish product, because i realy want to copy it. Sorry for my bad english. Have a nice day. Greatings from Sloveina by a young farmer Martin :)

I was looking at the Best Nest Box last night, and decided that's the way I was going to go. However, seeing you build one similar, it's making me think that it can be built! But yes, the Best Nest Box has a larger compartment for the eggs to roll into, so I bet if you make that adjustment it will be a total win.

Great video. Funny thing - I just finished my own roll-away-nestingboxes yesterday. Also a trial. As you I found that 10 rather than 15 degrees felt appropriate. I am really looking forward to see how your birds find your boxes - as mine have not yet laid a SINGLE egg in my design! I don´t know if it is due to the astroturf poultry tm mat or what. Today I added a fake egg to help them understand what the boxes are for ...

If you put a strip of foam in the front of the 'drawer' it will catch the eggs very nicely, or use the astroturf in front.
@ABlueDahlia
@ABlueDahlia 6 жыл бұрын
If the foam is too large, you could also try the liner for cabinets that is foamy but is thin. I think that would allow enough cushion that the eggs wouldn't break and also allow you to make a slope at the end of the roll away nest. Best of luck! Looks great.

Very nice. Build myself one yesterday also inspired by richard. I also used an 12 degree angle because i found that on another design. I will use it in the eggmobile, our land is flat as a pancake here in holland! I just put it with the chickens, very curious about how it will work.

You did a fine job building that nesting box, it did look a little bit to steep, but your modification should take care of the possible egg issue. Take care and God Bless you always my friend.

I have seen recommendations on 11 degrees for the angle as the preferred angle to prevent breaking... I agree with you that 14 seems quite steep
@Majorvideonut2
@Majorvideonut2 6 жыл бұрын
My thought was to cut a slot on either end for your angle board to fasten it with a screw and flat washer. If later you find that it is too steep and eggs are breaking you can loosen those screws and adjust it down a little until you are happy with it.

Will pressure washing the OSB board not cause it to delaminate. In Canada we generally only use OSB where it is protected from the moisture such as weather, even when used as house paneling its covered by the exterior siding installed over top.

hi. if i were you, i’d put only 2 screws on the sides and make a check of how it works (if the angle is reasonable) and if it needed adjustment it was very simple: just push it slightly up, test it again and then fix it for good.

in simplicity, at 14 degree incline angle would make the high side be at 6 inches higher on 2 feet (24 inches) run? a 3 inches rise over 24 inches run would get the incline angle to be 7 degrees? from trigonometry, the incline angle (0) is determined by the tangent of rise (y) over run (x), which = tan (0) = y/x ==> 0 = inverse tangent (y/x)? in complicity, if you want to determine the precise calculations then see Physics, which needs to consider the friction force between the egg and the incline surface, the mass of the egg, its moment of inertia, its radius, etc Overall, very good design :)

Table Saw Law:...Never use the rip fence and the T square at the same time !. Your " keeper piece" becomes trapped and is highly susceptible to becoming a wooden projectile aimed at your face . Cross cutting an end of an 8' sheet puts you 6' from the rip fence... ensuring that your out of position to properly push the work through the saw.
