Hunter: I'm a structural engineer, and I think something that most college-educated engineers don't understand is the practical application of their textbook knowledge. They have no hands-on experience to back up their book learning, and it really shows sometimes. They have no idea how to apply the knowledge to a real-life problem. You may not have a degree, but being an engineer isn't really about that. It's about how your mind works to solve problems, and videos like this just prove you're a better engineer than most I know.

Just a tip on turning the tube on the lathe, tack the plate on the end without a hole in it, and chuck it up. Then you can use a hammer and a dial indicator to dial in the end of the tube opposite of the chuck to run straight, and then drill the hole with the lathe tail stock. As long as you're careful, you can usually get away with it. Then it'll be perfectly straight and not have that offset cut that you saw. If it still sags, then after you dial it in and before you drill the hole, mount up the steady rest.

Great video and work. Really dig the faceplate on the lathe as far as being able to unbolt and flip the jaws. All of mine have to be unscrewed and flipped with the internal spiral gear and can be a real pain if they don’t go back on in the correct order or if they aren’t timed correctly causing the centerline to be off. Hunter, you may want to try out some "Flux-Core" wire, use with 75/25 Argon-CO-2, for your welding needs. FYI, the shipyard I worked at for 5 yr's building little 400 ft canoe's, (Had FULL SIZE Helicopter Land Pad's on the Bow of said canoe's.) we were instructed 5/8" in. (0.625" in.) plate steel or less, use .045" in. wire, bigger plate steel use 1/16" in. (0.0625" in.) Dia. wire. PS, no weaving of the weld bead was allowed. Just start your bead, and pull or push as necessary, NO WEAVING PERIOD. If the inspector's (U.S. Coast Guard, LLOYD'S of London Insurance Company, only on critical weld area's ) found somewhere you "weaved," they would mark said area, you had to grind it out, and start all over again. Plus, have Dave buy you a MILLER suit-case welder, (also some quick dis-connect for welding gas -Argon-CO-2 line{s}) for working in situations like in this video. That "Shop" welder is nice for most shop job's. Would have been the last thing I would have used on this job.

I spent around $20 grand on steel and supplies, and built every bracket, boom arm and fitting myself. So much fun, man I hate being disabled. Wrecking my back definitely made me slow way down, like to disability at 38. Now I sit around in pain all day, and on good days, I sometimes sneak to the shop and do a little tig welding.

I have an idea why the tube didn't machine round. Yes you're correct in assuming the tube isn't perfectly round, they never are. Not sure if you have dial indicators, but those continuous scroll three jaw chucks never tighten up completely true. For those really light cuts or when you're doing things that need to be concentric, an independent scroll 4 jaw chuck will be a big help. Great looking welds and great to see you wearing all the gear so you don't get cooked.

Hunter, my man...may I offer you some constructive advice on "Stress Welding Procedures". While .035 mig wire is a good all around wire for many applications, on a Truss assembly as you have build, will take alot of load and stresses at angles, and knowing Dave's infinity for testing the "limits', I would suggest using a .045 Flux core wire, for MANY reasons, one being the heat that is in the weld, during and after the weld, superior penetration. Secondly an .045 will put MORE material into the weld for bonding two pieces, and you will also find the weld will layout like peanut butter. it will look like it was CAST, not look like a "stitch weld". I have spent my life time in the Petroleum Industry building Centrifuges, Hot Oilers, Nitrogen Pumpers, Pressure Trucks, and occasional Drilling Rigs, and they ALL take a beating. I fabricate them from a pallet of laser cut steel, to a complete, on the rig operating million dollar plus piece of equipment, my fab work NEVER comes back for repairs, but have rebuilt/repaired my fair share of other competitors equipment( names withheld). I have been a Welder/fabr for over 30 yrs and work with some of the best, my employer puts me in a corner with a pallet of cut steel, and leaves me be, I work alone, where the rest of the crews, are 2 man teams. Not many people I can work with as my standard and ethics will never allow me to work with lazy morons that never follow procedures, that being said, I know I could work with you, we'd click, get'er done attitude always prevails. I seen how your mind works, and put to CAD, then bangin' it out. Good job Young fellow.

With so many big miles it was time to rebuild the upper end of the fuel system. Only problem was the Standard kit does not include all the pieces needed guess most of the 7.3 I.D.I. were non turbo. Secondary problem was Ford discontinued these parts as well. Luckily found two different Ford dealers that had some old stock and willing to make a sell. One East Ford and one West Coast Ford Dealerships. They each worked together and did not even jack me around on the special order pricing. Sweet!
